  1. Or play a modern defense and win 11 games with the best rushing offense in the NFL. I'm fine with that.
  2. BPA that is not a RB or DL. I would probably add OL to the list to exclude but this year the talent at OL is terrible and they will exclude themselves. Same goes for QB. There is not a QB worth a first round pick. However Trubisky will get drafted and someone will trade into the last first round and take Mahomes if he gets past Denver. That leaves BPA amongst CB, S, WR, LB, and TE - plenty of choices there.
  3. Why shouldn't they? A healthy Watkins, no O-line losses, and Rex is gone. If the defensive backfield can be improved in the draft, this is a 10 or 11 win team. Getting rid of Rex is 2 or 3 win improvement by itself. If Darby regresses further and the DB they draft can not start, it could be disaster.
  4. The problem is by draft day, none of these QBs will have a first round grade and Trubisky falling to #10 will only prove that. It is about the worst case scenario for Buffalo, as it almost assures the top 4 DBs are off the board, probably one WR, and maybe even Foster. If that is the case I would probably draft the remaining WR (Davis or Williams) or work a trade down only a few spots and hope Howard is still on the board.
  5. A Z. Brown signing sets the Bills up perfectly for a trade down and BPA approach in the draft. The biggest need would be CB and there are plenty to get in rounds 1-3.
  6. The only game changer that I would stay at #10 would be Adams or Hooker. If you said they take Foster at 10 I would probably be ok with that. Both Adams and Hooker will likely be gone unless there is a run on QBs. Therefore I advocate, trade down and take BPA from five positions - CB, S, TE, WR, QB. There is no OT that is worth wasting a day 1 or day 2 pick. Feels unseemly but I would like to see A. Williams back on a reduced incentive laden contract. I feel bad asking the neck injury guy to play for less money but if he wants to play that is the only fair way to structure a deal from the FO perspective.
  7. Agreed. He will see a lot of time rotating at DE. My vision for the base 4-3 has Washington starting at DE and Hughes at OLB. Lorax could also play DE in this scenario. In the nickel he will rotate with Hughes and Lawson at DE.
  8. 1. In the base 4-3 I believe Washington and Lawson will be the DE's and Hughes will play a stand-up OLB 2. In the Nickel formation which is the predominant formation, it will be Hughes at DE and Washington will rotate with Dareus and KW at DT. Lawson will stay at DE. Ragland probably is the MLB in the nickel and I suspect the other LB is not on the team right now and will come via the draft. 3. The starting CB opposite Darby is also not on the team now and will come via the draft. 4. Yes Mills is the weak spot on the line. I still think there is an outside chance Glenn moves to LT while Kujo plays LT but with his injury that is now less likely. Mills is adequate until Henderson comes off suspension and they compete for the starting job. The long term starting RT will come in the 2018 draft. 5. Unfortunately, my thoughts leave a big hole at safety, do little to upgrade the passing attack, and still leave them thin at LB. They will draft a safety for sure, but I doubt they will start three rookies two of which would be in the secondary. 6. P. Brown is the wild card. he was terrible last year. If he improves he could push to start and that would move Ragland to one of the OLB spots. If he is no better or regresses he will be a training camp cut.
  9. The only way I would support a QB in the first round is if the trade way way back into the 20's. That would mean they would get an extra second and a first in 2018. Then they can take a QB in the late first round. That would leave two seconds and a third for two DB's and a LB. Full disclosure, I would not draft any of these QB's in the first round. My strategy would be to move back only a few spots, take Howard or BPA, then hope Mahomes falls to the Bills in the second round. Any trade up this year for a QB is career suicide for Whaley.
  10. It's CB as the top safeties will be gone if they stay at 10. Best hope is trade down and they still can get Howard and a DB. Or trade down and get DB and QB.
  11. You said the draft was deep at RB. Why would Seattle give up a top 4 DB for an aging RB. They can just draft a young RB and keep Sherman
  12. Offer this year's second and next years first. Draft Davis or Williams at #10. Sherman, McDermott, a healthy Sammy and Shady would equal 11 maybe 12 wins and a fight for the AFC East title all the way to week 17. Oh you had to add that - I would throw in an extra 5th round pick for free just to see Sherman call out Sullivan
  13. Ah the old it was a tougher game then argument. Fouts, Marino, and Aikman never moved in the pocket either and did just fine in the same era. Brady is the best of all time in a time when QB is more important than ever. Kelly threw 25 times a game. The Bills won an AFC Championship scoring 10 points. That is nearly impossible now. Brady is the best of all timelse slightly edging out Montana. I said the opposite a year ago but there is no denying it any longer.
  14. Common sense would dictate a starting RT is more important than a backup center. I like Groy and hope they match. I could be talked into keeping him and letting Wood go. I would put GLenn at RT if Kujo is healthy and still plays at a high level at LT. It would also help if Henderson didn't get sick and use the illness as a reason to smoke pot without permission.
  15. Z. Brown - 2 year deal, first year fully guaranteed, second year team option. If he plays like a Pro-bowl player then the team keeps him and he gets paid. If not he leaves after one year he can seek another pay day elsewhere.
  16. They acquired Bledsoe and Johnson via trade. The 49ers replaced Montana with Young - via trade. Elway was eventually replaced by Manning via FA after a few decent drafted guys. Miami has yet to replace Marino. The Jets have never even replaced Namath - at best the signed Esiason. Bledsoe was replaced by a 6th round pick. My point is there are lots of ways to replace HOF QB's that don't involve the crap shoot that is the draft. But I agree - get back on the horse and keep trying until you find the guy. I think they can win with TT, but he needs a perfect situation around him. Keep taking bites at the apple until you find a true drop-back, can mae all the throws with accuracy guy. Until then just win some dam games. Drafting in the top 5 is no guarantee they will find the next HOF QB
  17. Let it play out. Whaley got rid of Fred when he was done. He may do the same with Wood
  18. From ESPN, Patriots off-season 2001. A remarkable haul that included cornerback Terrell Buckley, guard Mike Compton, linebacker Bryan Cox, fullback Marc Edwards, quarterback Damon Huard, linebacker Larry Izzo, receiver David Patten, linebacker Roman Phifer, defensive end Anthony Pleasant, running back Antowain Smith, and linebacker Mike Vrabel. It's hard to imagine there will ever be another free-agent class in New England that has the impact of '01. This FA class and and the emergence of Brady define Belichick. Are McDermott and Whaley trying to find the same magic? So far they have signed a number of mid-level guys that are position/scheme versatile. We have safeties that can play corner, a RG/RT, two FB/RB, a kicker that can kick-off(who would have thought of that)and some 4/5 WR types that can contribute on ST's. I want the comp pick for Gilmore and Woods too, but adding a number of guys like they have can transform a team like it did for Belichick. I know. I know. TT isn't Brady. Well Brady wasn't Brady with this group in 2001.
  19. And signed Groy who looked as good as Wood when h played. But Whaley knows nothin...
  20. Trade down and get a WR or TE. Score more points and keep Brady on the sidelines
  21. While I generally agree with the OP that this should be a strategy to obtain more picks. I rant endlessly about trading down and the draft is nothing more than gambling. But the OP could wait a few more days before going over the top. The Bills have lots of guys that can and will leave in FA. And the last two players signed are retained FA's. Lastly, the cap moves are much more important than any comp picks in 2018. Whaley has freed up money to move down in the draft and get more picks for which cap space will be needed to sign. The cap space can be pushed to next year and used to extend Sammy.
  22. I'm ok with this. It is one less FA signed from elswhere that should help get comp picks next year. He is above average run blocker and awful in pass protection. Maybe Kujo beats him out. Maybe it is a stop gap for Henderson. OT market and draft are awful.
  23. Like him at 10, love him at 16 plus an extra 3rd and 5th
