He knows Manning is close to done and he has to get a job now. I wouldn't touch him. Manning runs the offense and any OC who has worked under Manning (yes, worked under Manning) is way overrated.

Everything in Polian's statement is logical, unlike the garbage Graham spewed. Are we supposed to believe that a coach 20 years younger than Polian and light years behind in football knowledge would be able to talk Polian out of a job if he wanted it. And further, that he would take Marrone's opinion as the sole voice and not, I don;t know the former Bills he was the GM for who can't get away from OBD? Jesus the media is a joke. Polian was clear that Pegula has been professional and treated him with respect and that his intent was to come in and advise and guide the team for a few years, not rebuild it. He said his age and family considerations made his interest really only for three years max. I tend to believe the actual words of respected people more than the unnamed sources who have the luxury of passing the media lines of sheet to spread rumor and ill-will. Man is the media creeping close to ambulance chasing lawyers and prostitutes as the least respected professions. Yeah, the conversation went like this "Yeah Mr. Polian this is Coach Marrone." "Oh, you're leaving, thanks for the info, that changes things a great deal." Benigni is an entrepreneur of character assassination by unnamed sources.

Has Marrone's credibility as a Head Coach taken a hit?
zonabb replied to gjv001's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
+1 If you subscribe to the "he didn't finish the job" approach then you then put yourself into a position of holding the team to the same standard when they fire a coach. It's just not a defensible position in a multibillion dollar BUSINESS. -
At least you admit it. Most here won't but I think most that don't like him as a coach comes down to not liking his personality. The problem, that hatred biases any comments about him as a coach. Emotion doesn't make for clear rational thinking.

We need a HC, that can build a Super Staff

A franchise QB. Without one it won't matter. -
[closed]If Marrone gets a job for $5 million....
zonabb replied to Bronc24's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
And he'll look pretty damn smart IMO by walking away from a team who wouldn't commit to an extension and into a team who presumably would give him three more years. Good move for him, strike while his value is high. This is a business afterall. -
Reich... offense was choked down the stretch in a playoff race and not ready Kubiak... losing record as a head coach Gase... no name prior to Manning, suddenly a superstar? and any other OC who watches his franchise QB actually coach and run the offense. Won't matter.... Marrone, Cowher, Lombardi, Belicheck..... won't be sustained winners without a QB. 3 and done for the next guy without a QB. Bank on it. Keep chasing coaches until your blue in the face, they need a QB.
-
+1 I never understand how everyone wants the OCs who coach franchise QBs to come to a new team with garbage at the position and then wonder why they always flame out.

I love the comments that "Marrone didn't get them to 9-7." You make statements like that it shows a lack of a clue. GO watch some all-22 and read any of the multiple all-22 write ups out there.... lack of execution by the offense and poor line play (due to a lack of talent) doomed this team. YOu can't make Orton hit open receivers. You can't make an OL block well (sorry, you teach technique and scheme and they have execute), you can't make CJ Spiller cut it up the field. Having the right talent, that can execute, results in good play. I know a lot think you can make players better athletes or smarter, you can't. You can't fix slow and immobile or stupid.

Rapaport: Marrone was in line for lucrative extension?
zonabb replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Good for Marrone in the short term. It's a major gamble to walk away seemingly without a job albeit with $4M in your pocket. But assuming he knew that a president of football ops was coming and he could be fired after all the jobs are filled isn't an easy thing to live with. Being out of the game for a year wouldn't be good long term so it's was a calculated risk. I don't fault the guy notr hate him with the venom many here do. But I will say that the constant new info on stories like this make it worthless to try to draw some truth out. The stories can be so opposite it's worthless. -
Does it really matter who without a QB? Just consider that. Everyone calls guys like Kubiak "offensive geniuses" because why, they manage to be close to .500 eve year with subpar QBs. Guy had one winning record as a head coach. It comes down to a QB, that's it. Give me anyone and a franchise QB. Give me Vince Lombardi and fill-in-the-blank mediocre QB and you have mediocre team.
-
Because Pegula is the President and owner, those statements come from him, not the person in Russ' role. Can't understand why people can't understand the structure and hierarchy of this team. Pegula is the de facto football czar as President. Brandon runs the business side, Whaley the football side. So when a coach leaves, it's the president in this case who makes the statement. And if they get a pres of football ops, maybe it changes. But trying to say Brandon is out of the loop because you don't like the guy doesn't make it reality. I've said it before in other posts, this guy has polish the worst turd in the NFL for 15 years and kept the stadium full with garbage after garbage on the field while being micromanaged by the former owner.

I've lauded Joe B for being in my mind the best local reporter when he sticks to facts and data. But his opinion pieces like this are filled with garbage, conjecture and innuendo. A young green guy like him has made a good name for himself like all young reporters do by sticking to the facts. His inexperience is painful when he tries to have an opinion. But in today's media, you don't need 20 years on the beat before you get to have an opinion. Here's a point... He state marrone had ruined Spiller or doesn't know what to do with him? Really? No coach has figured out how to give a guy vision and guts...what Fred has.

Who will Pollian get for QB ?
zonabb replied to Buffalo Barbarian's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
So we're projecting a QB acquisition from a person who isn't here in a unnamed position with unknown control? Got it. -
Head Coach Candidate: Frank Reich
zonabb replied to Buffalo Barbarian's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
No thanks. Not ready, choked away a playoff chance down the stretch with a far better QB than he'd have here. Sick of relying on the glorious past.... Let's move forward. -
Marrone was upset at the Buffalo Media
zonabb replied to Jerry Jabber's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Don't buy it. Did he hate dealing with them? Clearly. Did he quit because of it, hardly. That's laughable. It's typical character assassination by the media, the this case Carucci, by hiding bring anonymous sources. Talk about chicken bleep. You're gonna call the guy a baby by using an anonymous source. Media sucks. Not a huge marrone fan but I'll back the guy here. Because he doesn't like dealing with the media gets him characterized as thin skinned by that same media and that's bush league. The media has a false sense of entitlement with regards to sports and the expectation of courtesy with obligation. Good for Marrone, it's the one quality I appreciated, just like with Bill Belichek. . -
But he's a big dummy. Actually just a good agent. With relocation a possibility if a new owner came along, it was probably a provision any coach would ask for.
-
They need an experienced head coach. Reich had a franchise QB and choked away a playoff spot, I don't want that guy. Sick of coordinators and underwhelming college coaches

Can't wait for 12:01 when Marrone is still here and this thread can end. The people calling for this guy to leave are letting emotion get in the way of ration. You don't like the guy because he made you feel sad a few days this year? Because he didn't call the game the way you, armchair HC, think it should be called? Because he hasn't fired the OC that you, in your professional experience, deem football illiterate. How has firing guys left and right worked during this playoff drought? I'm just unsure what exactly everyone expects from a guy without a franchise QB in a conference where the current playoff QBs are Brady, Manning, Luck, Roethlisberger, Flacco, and Dalton.... Just chew on this for a minute.... that's Four QBs with 76 playoff games and 7 Super Bowl titles between them. The other two have lead their teams to the playoffs 5 times. Marrone's had a raw, poor decision-making EJ Manuel and a seasoned poor decision-making and immobile behind a putrid OL Kyle Orton. I'd say 9-7 with these QBs is closer to a miracle than grounds for firing. Just when we have a GM who has put talent on this roster and a coach who has done his best to improve the on field product. Save the argument about miss unless you're going to show me how all the other GMs draft 7 guys a year who are immediate starters. In my mind, it's a nice change to see a GM willing to not be in love with his guys and pour over other teams practice squad players and make trades. The old guy conservative trend didn't work either. Since he got her in February 2010 (let's assume he had some input in the 2010 draft), they've drafted these players who have made major contributions and/or are starters: Spiller, Moats, Easley, Dareus, A. Williams, Sheppard (who became Hughes), Searcy, Hairston, Gilmore, Glenn, Bradham, Brooks, Woods, Alonso, Watkins, Brown, Henderson. Those are solid contributions from drafts. Some misses in there, I acknowledge that (EJ for example but I'm not one to write off a QB after less than a season's worth of starts although I have serious doubts). But if you can draft basically 3 top quality players in the draft every year, I think we'd take it. Throw in some of the backups they've drafted and FA they've added and it's very good management. My point is, you can look at the facts, see the track record of other coaches and GMs on the context of their ability to get and coach talent, or you can be emotion and ignore it.

Raiders interested in Russ Brandon
zonabb replied to Jerry Jabber's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Winning is the bast marketing model, without question. In the absence of that, Brandon, saddled with marketing a turd, somehow managed to polish it. His business and marketing value to this team is under appreciated and undervalued here. Sad really. Having worked in consulting for years, I appreciate the job markets do, or as some of us referred to them as "**** merchants." It was their job to oversell our skills and they often do with little fanfare. Brandon has done very well and deserves a post on the business side. And anyone who thinks the guy doesn't know football is failing to recognize that he's lived it day in and day our for years and he know more than everyone on this board, which is filled with self-professed experts. The assumption that he knows zero because he has a business background is infantile. -
Russ Brandon and Marrone's Opt-Out Clause
zonabb replied to Bills1218's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Sure he can. What everyone here is doing is interjecting their own value of Marrone into the transaction rather than looking at it rationally. You're saying if you were the Bills you wouldn't give him a raise (based on your own value that doesn't include your checkbook). But this is really classic economics. He hasn't been fired right? So then we know that team wants him to stay. He knows that. When you're wanted and the have the ability to walk, you approach your boss and ask for a raise or if you're on a contract, and extension, right? He might overplay his hand and the Bills call his bluff, assuming he won't leave because there isn't a job for home somewhere. But that's all based on incomplete information on the Bills behalf. I were Marrone, I'd ask for one year extension with a slight raise and an option for one more year if they achieve some level of wins. It meets his need for an extension/raise and recognizes his stronger position while providing the Bills some potential good value, security, and continuity while also giving them some out. I just never understand how everyone thinks the rules of economics and business don't apply to football and that their value of players, coaches, and administration trump common principles. I guess it's easy to have these opinions when you don't own the team and cut checks but also obvious that your more angry with the guy because of how he makes you feel when they lose than you are rational about how good he is all around as a coach. -
Erin Andrews date or Bills home playoff game?
zonabb replied to BrycePaup4ever's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Home playoff game. I could buy a hot date (or is it the fame your after because there are hotter women all around that her), I can't buy a home playoff game. -
Joe B just lost all credibility, Part II
zonabb replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm a fan of his analysis when it is based on film review, facts, and empirical data. His opinions flat out suck. And correct me if I am wrong, is he not a FSU grad? Winston will be a bust. Questionable decision maker and has regressed from last year. And I've touted the simple Wonderlic stat for a long time.... show me a score above 22 and he's in the discussion as a worthwhile pick somewhere in the draft. Anything less and you're drafting someone who will never win a Super Bowl. Complain about the scores all you want but aside from every Super Bowl winner back into the 1980s had a score above 22. Coincidence? I think not. It doesn't guarantee you squat except you're unlikely to win a Super Bowl. Playoffs, sure in some cases. But a Super Bowl, hasn't happened as far as I know. -
Predict the starting quarterback for week 1..
zonabb replied to BillsFan130's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Hoyer. Seems like the right confluences of circumstances. He's a free agent and the Browns will let him walk. The Browns have to get him out of the way to put the pressure on Manziel to mature and be the unquestioned leader. The relationship with Pettine will allow the team to get some good intel on him. And of course, he's mediocre with limitations, about all you really can find in free agency at the QB position. -
