EJ Manuel's odds to start: Running thread
ThurmasThoman replied to ThurmasThoman's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Great info! Thanks man! -
I've read a few articles today, trying to get a handle on when EJ is coming back. In one article, coach Marrone was quoted as saying that EJ would need to play in about 3 out 5 practices before New England for coach to feel comfortable starting him. So, if there are 5 practices left between now and New England, does anyone have any idea when those practices are? Also (obviously), on days when there IS a practice, there is generally a lot more news that we can sink our teeth into regarding EJ's health, progress, and odds to start. So, with that being said, here are the days between now and the opener, filled in with what we know will be the Bills schedule (edited to be updated as information becomes available): Saturday, August 31: Off day--no practice, no news. Roster cutdowns are finalized, so perhaps a presser from Marron. Sunday, September 1: Practice 1 of 5. Monday, September 2: Practice 2 of 5. Tuesday, September 3: Off day--no practice, no news. Wednesday, September 4: Practice 3 of 5. (If EJ has not practiced before this date in time, and does not practice on this date, according to what Marrone has said, he will not start.) Thursday, September 5: Practice 4 of 5. Friday, September 6: Practice 5 of 5. Saturday, September 7: Final walk-through before Patriots game. Sunday, September 8: Opening weekend: New England Patriots at Buffalo Bills, 1pm.

Bills reportedly concerned Kolb's career over
ThurmasThoman replied to FluffHead's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
lol, are you kidding me. i saw jimbo get hit so hard once, he walked to the wrong sideline. kolb got hit, finished the drive, and it was the only points we scored all day. nfl is probably paying him to retire. if this was 3 years ago, homeboy would be starting on thursday against detroit. lol, "a functional life". immediately after that hit was the only time we had a "functional offense" all game. -
Let's look at the QB situation. Yesterday, shortly before kickoff, our QB depth chart (if you had access to Marrone's office) would probably look something like: 1) EJ 2) Kolb 3) Tuel 4) Brad Smith What changed in yesterday's game? 1) EJ: nothing 2) Kolb's career is (possibly) over 3) Tuel played like garbage 4) Brad Smith did nothing of importance So, with 2 QBs signed today, we can assume Leinart is replacing Kolb and Lewis is going to replace either Tuel or Smith on the roster. Bottom line: a week from now, look for Tuel or Smith to be released.

Gilmores injury: out 6 to 8 weeks

any word at all today? no news is good news? im assuming if he tore ligaments in his wrist, we'd know by now? (are there even ligaments in your wrist, lol?) -
I completely agree--he's borderline average at best. perhaps even bottom 10 in the league (as far as starters). you know exactly what youre getting from him. my point was simply: he's garbage, yes, but were he a Bill, he would arguably be one of our 3 greatest qbs. EVER. the national media rips this man to shreds, day-in, day-out. was the butt fumble funny? sure. 9 months ago. espn still shows it on a daily basis. i guess you always hear "player x couldnt play in NY, they couldnt handle the media spotlight." but at some point in the last 5 years, its like the national media said, "lets REALLY create a spotlight on these new york city teams". a-rod and mark sanchez are the sports news right now. i guess... i just feel bad for sanchez??
-
This is likely old news to 99% of this board, but I just got Direct TV last month... I had been without cable for half a decade (would get Bills games through my PS3/Sunday Ticket ap), and was excited to watch all of the sports shows again. One thing I quickly realized: these shows devote 25-33% of their DAILY coverage, to the New York Jets. And you would think, from watching it, that the Jets are the most inept, incompetent organization in the history of professional football. They don't just criticize Mark Sanchez, they mock him. That "butt fumble" play is STILL on countdown lists--its been #1 on their "worst of the worst" list for 38 straight weeks. So, for 38 weeks, they have been openly mocking Mark Sanchez. Mark Sanchez: a guy that if he was qb of the Bills would be... #3 all time in bills history for completions, behind kelly and ferguson # 4 all time in bills history for yards, behind kelly, ferguson and kemp # 4 all time in bills history for TDs behind kelly, ferguson and, yes, fitzpatrick (by 3). Not to mention back to back conference championship game appearances. 4 years into his career, he would be one of the best Bills qbs of all time, and yet he is mocked mercilessly by the national media. Now I dont particularly care for the Jets... I dont hate them like some of the older posters here... but if I were a Jets fan, i would be pissed, and have a much more legitimate gripe about being "disrespected" by the national media than we can as Bills fans.

Wow 2 pages of slander against a divisional opponent? Surely my eyes deceive me. Someone get in here quick and chide us for bashing the dolphins. call us homophobes. tell us tom brady is the best quarterback to ever play the game, and that the patriots never cheated, and anyone who dares to question the legitimacy of their super bowls doesnt understand football. doesnt anyone in here have a dolphins player on their fantasy team?? i refuse to believe this thread could go 2 pages deep with none of this happening.

HA. i know several people who have met Phil personally, and I can assure you he is one of the "d-baggiest" athletes around. tiger is aloof, sure, but figjam takes pretentious to a completely new level. -

Holmes may miss 2013 season for Jets
ThurmasThoman replied to dascottbills28's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm in the minority with what I'm about to say... in fact, I may be literally the only person on this board that feels this way, but since spygate, there has been one thing that the Patriots have had working in their favor over every other team in the AFC east, and that is the way the NFL schedules their season since realignment. With teams playing every team in their division 2x (6 games) every team from a division in the opposing conference 1x (4 games) and one division within your conferences 1x (4 games) that means that teams within a division share 14 out of 16 games. The Patriots are playing, essentially, the exact same schedule as the Bills--it's no coincidence that their "dominance" of the last decade has coincided with realignment. If the formula (or lack there of) that was used pre-realignment was still in place, I think you would have seen the Jets win the division 2-3 times, the Dolphins win it once or twice, and yes, possibly even the Bills in 2011. Think about it like this: the Pats play the Bills twice a year--Beli knows our offense, what we do, etc. Ditto for his working knowledge of the Phins, and Jets. Now, ff the Patriots are playing 14 out of 16 opponents that the Bills are playing, (as well as miami and new york) Beli can prep for that game by seeing how, let's say, Houston's defense, handled their game against the Bills, Dolphins, and Jets. It's crazy. Now, that's not to say that the Bills, Dolphins and Jets don't have that same "advantage", because obviously they do... but if we could consolidate this down to my overarching thesis, it's this: The Patriots havent been as good as you THINK they are, for 6 or 7 years now. They look good in the regular season, then get executed fairly easily in the playoffs. In fact, they shouldnt have made that super bowl 2 years ago--but that's another story. -

Is "Division 4" college football coming?
ThurmasThoman replied to PromoTheRobot's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
the problem is, these universities are subsidized at the state AND federal level. of course the football programs generate revenue for the schools, but that money goes into a pot and is doled out accordingly (on a school level.) you're now asking tax payers to foot the bill to put college athletes on a salary--perhaps a condition of this program should be that every piece and parcel of each of these programs must be made in america by american based companies. but that won't happen. i love watching football as much as the next man, but i would much rather put every aspiring mathematician on a 50g a year salary, so that way more kids would make a decision in high school to stick with math, so they could get that college pay day. you can scoff, or roll your eyes at it, but heres the thing, its MY money thats going to pay these athletes salaries, so it should be MY vote that decides who gets the money. the problem isnt paying college athletes, the problem is that once again, a MAJOR MAJOR MAJOR decision is being made about how YOUR tax dollars get spent, and the decision is being made by a huge business (the head of athletic conferences) that is already rich beyond anyones measure. just like investment banking, and variable rate mortgages: these men have made all the money they can in their field, and now theyre coming for whats in your wallet. americans are just too stupid and passive to understand/care. -

Rule change I'd like to see re: penalties
ThurmasThoman replied to WIDE LEFT's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
why do the refs have to judge whether its pass or throw? holding doesn't result in the play being blown dead, it continues til the whistle. as for what I would like to see: on offense, any penalties inside your own 10 that result in "half the distance to the goal" should instead be added to the amount of yards you have remaining to pick up a first. so a holding on the 1 that results in 3rd and 11.5 yards to go, should instead move the chains out to 3rd and 20. -
Possible changes coming to Pro Bowl
ThurmasThoman replied to Just Jack's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
16 weeks of games for each nfl team, 16 teams per conference. 16 weeks of monday night football (weeks 1 through 16, all week 17 games are played on sunday.) every monday night football game should be an interconference match (buffalo v. carolina, new england v. tampa bay, etc.) the conference that wins the probowl should host all of those monday night games. so if the afc wins the probowl, you know, no matter what, next season, the bills will be hosting a prime time game against an NFC team. as an aside, i've always said that monday night football games should be afc v nfc only---because true fans (not fantasy football players) will always have a rooting interest, in seeing the team from their conference LOSE. -
Welcome to 2013: the Bills have had a higher ranked defense than the Patriots for 3 years in a row. Stop living in the past. The Patriots have done one thing and one thing only in the last decade: beat the bills. They sure as hell aren't winning championships. I would highly encourage you to start watching games on sunday that a) don't involve the bills and b) don't involve your fantasy team. pay attention to who san francisco or pittsburgh releases if you want to pick up a player--not the patriots, who havent had a defense outside the bottom 10 for 4 years.

Mario Williams: no love for
ThurmasThoman replied to \GoBillsInDallas/'s topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
this is absolutely ridiculous. so because the guy tackles other men for a living once a week for our enjoyment, he should be void of every other characteristic that make us human? how did you get on this planet? did a man meet a woman, at some point in time, and make a baby, and then raise that baby to become you? i don't know how to break this to you, but that's sort of how the world works. mario looks like he picked the wrong girl. oh well, it happens. but this whole notion "why do these guys with a million dollars get married, it makes no sense." who are you to judge that mans financial decisions. someone who makes less than you would ask why you make the decisions you do with your disposable income. to fault mario williams for falling in love? and you're supposed to "moderate" the discussions here? if that's your outlook on life, you shouldn't be allowed to "moderate" discussions on an elementary school playground, much less on a site with adults. no wonder these athletes hate the media and the fans.
