  1. Even though I knew we would probably lose when we kicked it back to KC and watched the inevitable Mahomes dink and dunk into winning FG range with the Bills playing 5 yards off and no pass rush, I literally had no doubt that Bass would make that kick. Even for all his inconsistency this year. So you might say that I got double surprised Charlie Browned at the ending of this game! But break my heart once shame on you Bills and well break my heart 15 times, I guess thats shame on me!

  2. The deep plays were there for Josh and he was being patient. I counted 4 long passes. 3 were outright dropped by receivers (2 by Sherfield and 1 by Diggs) and the last one that Josh had Shakir in the endzone he didnt get enough on it. The Bills failed to make the plays that would have won them this game or at the very least put way more pressure on KC. KC got let off the hook on all 4 and as much of a genius as Spagnola seems to think he is (and others too) they had nothing to with him and everything to do with luck.

  3. Kelly had so many weapons at QB, Reed, Lofton, Metzellars and Thurman Thomas who could do everything effectively. He also had a great group of supporting but players like Beebe, Davis etc.  Kelly was a great QB but he never could have done what he did without those guys. I think Josh could be even better than Kelly with a similar cast of characters. We need to go all in and find the modern versions of all these guys. We already have some pieces but need to add way more depth.

  4. TBD is great! I often think that being a Bills fan is like being in an abusive relationship where you try your best but your partner constantly lets you down. Such trauma requires therapy and only this place supplies it! In addition the humor, especially at times like this reminds me that after all its just a sport!

Very true. I don’t know any kicker who went from having the yips, to being one of the best in the league. Once one goes through that, it’s over. Guaranteed to crop up again at some point in the future. Kicker is an isolating job, I wouldn’t want it.

The best example I can think of is Mike Vanderjagt. The most accurate in the NFL up to the early 2000s then he just lost it with kicks like this:

I’m fine with the idea of a fake punt in that spot. Especially since I don’t think we’ve run one in years.

But the execution was terrible. Hamlin was motioning weird before the snap, which tipped that something was up. Then the play itself never had a chance.

Basically if you are going to call that play there, you better have a flawless implementation and execution ready to go, which they obviously didn’t.

Whats incredible about the Bills is how bad they were on gadget plays under Dorsey and even last night under Brady. I dont mind the decision to fake it but the scheme and the execution was absolute crap. It looked like it was improvised in the dirt! On the only other gadget play they have tried this year ( a flea flicker) they completely botched it as well, like they never practiced it.  They looked like a HS team out there (actually worse). Under Dabol the Bills were masters of the gadget plays and executed them really well. Take a look at this punt vs the Pats. Its superb! thats how you execute a fake punt, not that idiotic crap like last night!

I'm just as mad/dissapointed that we lost last night as any other bills fan today. Last week I heard alot on local sports talk radio about how this was our year and how if we just beat kc, it's gotta be our year finally. OK, based on what?!

The last 8 games have been fun. Nobody thought this team would win the division, let alone be the 2 seed and host 2 home playoff games. Having said that, our offense needs serious help. Allen is an absolute animal, but he can't do absolutely everything. I've seen Diggs take alot of flack today on social media and it's well deserved. He's been non existentent the last 8 or so games. Harty and sherfield were complete non factors the entire season. Gabe played nowhere near what we (and the team) expected. Knox was hurt and even when he wasn't, he wasn't exactly a game changer. Kinkaid and Shakir were the lone bright spots, and Shakir really didn't show up until after Dorsey was gone. Cook was great, but we need more. The defense came through, even as beat up as they've been, but in today's nfl you cannot rely solely on the defense. WGR brought up a great point this morning, saying how kc has won superbowls when their defense was ranked in the mid 20's. We need more offense.

I could go on and on, but Imo this wasn't the team that was gonna win it all. I was worried about last night's game, and even had they pulled it out, I'd never believe they could get through Baltimore. Houston has a similar offense to Buffalo and they couldn't muster more than 3 points on offense against Baltimore. Ya I know they have a rookie qb, but stroud is a beast. It'll be super interesting to see what kc does against Baltimore next week. I think Baltimore beats kc by 10 🤷 thanks for letting me vent

I thought this team might be able to do it (even with the awful injuries ) if it peaked at the right moment. Ive watched football since the 79 season, Its not unusual for a team to come out of relative nowhere and win a championship. They just got hot and caught some breaks. The Raiders in 1980, The Giants against us in 1990, The Pats first SB, Baltimore's first SB with Trent Dilfer as QB. All these teams rounded into form and caught some lucky breaks on their way to winning. I really thought that might happen to us and we finally had KCs number. Now looking back 24 hours later, that was somewhat delusional, possibly nuts. The key injury for me was Milano, even as well as Bernard played this season as the leader of the defense, Milano was the glue that held it together and the playmaker when you needed him. The one guy that could by himself turn around a game by leading by example. We have not had that defensive leader since he went down. Even last night there was nobody to stem the tide when KC got rolling. Just one INT or sack might have done it but they had nothing. We did get some luck with the touchback fumble but it wasnt enough!

As for KC vs the Ravens. I still think that Lamar implodes. Mahomes is just too savvy under the pressure to be beaten.

They were hoping it was like a charity play where they let the kid score and acted like they all can’t catch him…. Make a wish campaign for damar.

I am ready for Damar to move on, I’m happy he is alive and well but we need better…

This is a pretty mean joke but it made me laugh out loud on this dreary day!! I feel the same way. I wish him well but he isnt an NFL caliber player.

  9. Yes the stats speak for themselves. All of McD's playoff losses have 2 things in common. Bad decisions in game by him or his defenses that could not get it done when it really mattered. Last night had both again. He should have gone for the 4th down at the end. Going for the FG would have only had us the tie temporarily before Mahomes drove down the field for a winning FG on a defense that would have most likely have left guys wide open in a soft zone (as they did all night) or got gashed by 8 yard runs.

Andy Reid is a HOF coach but even he got fired for not taking the Eagles over the hump. McD isnt in the same conversation as Reid but we dont have the ruthless ownership that the Eagles do to move on from him.

While walking down Southwestern Boulevard to my car in the gloom and cold last night, the following question stuck in my head:

Why is it so goddamn hard for our offense to make a single play?

Why does Josh have to kill himself for a first down? Why does he have to make pinpoint throws across his body for touchdowns? Why is every receiver covered so easily?

I take a look at other games, like the Detroit game, and I see playmakers schemed open with ease. Goff is an alright quarterback but he’s helped by guys who are easily open on their own.

I don’t know whether it’s scheme or talent or both, but it shouldn’t be so difficult to just sustain a drive.

Case in point, we STILL cannot run a screen to save our lives. Brady kept dialing up screens to Kincaid or Diggs that would gain a few, but never a back-breaking 25 yard catch-and-run.

Or, Josh throwing a nice ball over the middle to Cook. Would have been an easy touchdown, but it was dropped. Why does he have to truck 6 defenders just to keep a drive alive?

Why is it so hard for us?

I blame the Dorsey offense. Brady did a much better job at in game decisions but he was limited to the Dorsey offense. I noticed the exact same thing as you in the last 2 weeks watching the other playoff teams. Even the worst teams got receivers open. Even the worst teams ran deception plays or screens that got great yardage. Those teams were able to make things consistently better and easier for their often inferior QBs (like Rudolph etc) to make plays. But Brady was stuck with Dorsey's Pop Warner playbook. Its an absolute travesty that he came in here and made our offense worse.

  11. I agree Davis was missed but 2021 Gabe Davis. He has not been that guy since the 13 seconds game. a few flashes here and there but cancelled by drops and running the wrong routes.  We desperately need a stud WR on this offense for the deep threat. Its too bad that hasnt materialized for Davis.

  12. Had a terrible sleep replaying the slow motion nightmare of last night. I'm pretty laid back about most things in life. The Bills are pretty much the only thing that gets my heart pounding with stress and adrenaline like that and sleep gets ruined. That said, today I am numb. It always feels like someone has died when the Bills finally get knocked of contention and I am sick and tired of doing a post mortem about things every year at this time. It will fade in the next couple of days but right now its that stupid childish feeling of sadness.

Maybe the worst call I’ve ever seen. You can’t tell me that McD’s personal beliefs weren’t involved with giving that play the OK. That alone was a fireable play

I dont mind it as a call. But Damar Hamlin getting the ball?

  14. Leonard Floyd was good at times this year but ultimately he was disappointing when it mattered. Even so I would love for him to be back. Jones was great then injured (need him back to form) . Hyde appears to be done as an effective player (One of my favourite Bills of the last few years) The rest of the list is so meh that I couldnt care less. Epenesa especially disappointed me. Flashes of brilliance then invisibility.

  15. I agree about the WRs but even a quality group of receivers needs a good offensive play book to part of. Watching the last two weeks of playoffs showed me over and over again how unsophisticated our offense was this season compared to other teams. Even with Brady running it and making better decisions than the useless Dorsey we were hamstrung by the limited playbook. Yes Josh missed guys tonight but on many plays we were not scheming guys open and there was no deception to our game plan all season like in the Dabol years. The 4th down? play to Shakir where he faked left then right in the backfield and was wide open for the first down was so rare this year. Brady did well with a terrible offense he inherited but imagine our current offense with a great coordinator and a sophisticated play book!

It was a lazy attempt at humor. Everyone copes differently. I’ve been let so many times by the Bills I actually don’t get let down anymore.

Most of the time I just laugh. 12 men on the field was hysterical to me.

This ending though was completely predictable. Don’t understand all the “heart break” talk from anyone whose been a fan for 20+ years.

Its the Charlie Brown effect. This time! Yes this time we are going to kick that football! and then reality strikes and our SB victory and hope vanish like a mirage.  I've been a fan since the 79 season and they have killed me like this at least 8 or 9 times but I foolishly convince myself to hope again!

That is what I want to know.

Who cares about the future right now?

KC just ended our season for the 3rd time in 4 years.

I mean... I can't even get myself to care about that right now.  And it's going to take a while.   I am amazed so many of you are able to do that - almost immediately - following a loss like this.

Im with you there. But the future is the only glimmer of hope we have with this never ending Bills induced torture!

The game was over anyway if Bass made that FG. No way would the defense stop Patty from getting points the very next drive. There should’ve been a “TD or bust” mentality on that last one. Bleed the clock and go for the 4 point lead.

We would have watched Mahomes do his master class on hurry up dink and dunk and the Bills chasing him and missing him only for him to get a first down. Von Miller tackling air and then the inevitable Butker perfect Fg right down the middle with no time on the clock.

  19. 7 minutes ago, Generic_Bills_Fan said:

This is getting thumbs ups?  Lol 4th and 9 you’ve gotta take the fg it is absolutely insanity to do otherwise

probably lose if we get the fg yea maybe…but the odds of converting that 4th and 9 were extraordinarily low

Not insanity at all with an iffy kicker (who is in a bad headspace) on a cold night and a defense who had few answers at all. We needed to go for the 4th down play and win it with no time for the Chiefs to go down the field for a TD.

There are college kickers that would have made that kick 9 out of 10 time.  I bet you Bass misses 50% of them.

No contest the guy has to go too.

Like I said next year is a mini-rebuild time for this team.  They are too old.

Yes that meatball that played for Washington would have made it because that guy has confidence.  Bass was scared when he trotted out there and tightened up. The kick was really bad.

  21. 7 minutes ago, KDIGGZ said:

Nobody should be blaming our bad kicker for being bad. Blame the coaches for putting him in that position knowing that he is bad. He was statistically one of the worst kickers in the entire league this year. The result was inevitable.

There's absolutely no reason why the offense went off their game plan instead of slowly and methodically continuing to march down the field and run the clock. For some reason they started launching impossible throws down field rather than picking up 7-8 yards every play with Kincaid.

Even if Bass makes the kick (we knew he wouldn't) then the Chiefs have the ball with over a min left. You don't think Mahomes is going to get his guys in FG range when we didn't stop them at all the entire night? Again, don't blame Bass. This isn't his fault. We would have lost either way.

Yup I agree. As soon as we decided to play for a tie with a low % FG kicking in the cold, we lost this game. We should have gone for the first down and the TD and the win. I would have had more respect for McD had he done so. Bass hasnt been right for a long time and McD knew that. If we get that TD we are up by 4 and KC has to drive the field and cant get one of their bogus game winning FGs. But either McD froze or he never even contemplated that scenario.

Diggs dropping that bomb. We end of punting in that drive. No points scored. We probably (maybe?) get at least three there if caught.

This is the one that kills me the most. Josh missing the crossing route to Diggs there on the last drive on 2nd and 9. If caught, Diggs definitely gets a first and probably goes down around the 10. It’s plays like these that made a Brady great cause he would see it, take the easy, high percentage, throw and keep the chains moving and the clock ticking. I honestly think at this point Josh will never get us over the hump because of either his inability to see plays like that or unwillingness to take the easy dump off even at crunch time.

Bass missing the FG at the end. Statistically Bass has been one of the worst kickers this season. I’ve been harping about it since the beginning of December. McD simply never trusted him the second half of the season. Last week was a giant flashing sign saying “don’t trust bass!” that McD didn’t heed. Even his XPs tonight were barely eeking in between the uprights. Now I understand if we make that FG, the chiefs still have a lot of time and two TOs, but missing it guaranteed we would lose.

    1. Diggs has to make that catch, it was in his hands

    2. The miss to Diggs was on Josh totally. He will be having nightmares watching that again.

    3. Bass lost his mojo a while ago. And once a kicker does that, its over. Its very similar to Norwood. Baltimore and KC dont have that problem.

  23. Ultimately it comes down to coaching. Even at the end. McD knows that Bass is struggling and so does Brady. Why did we even kick there?? ? Even if Bass gets the FG we probably lose this game because the Chiefs get into winning FG range easily when they get the ball back. Once we didnt get the touchdown we lost.

McD just isnt up to the job when it comes to these high stress crucial decisions.
