You are allegedly running a 3-4 defense your two starting outside linebackers are Spencer Johnson and Chris Kelsay? Really? REALLY??????? Either go to a 4-3 and put Kelsay back at DE where he can at least be mediocre or take the two best OLB's on the other 31 teams' practice squads, sign them and start them.

"Inapproapriate thread"? Really? How about a thread that discusses whether our remaining games are "winnable" and that if we go 4 and 2 we've got a good shot at the playoffs? Tight end isn't a number one priority by any means. The thread is just a comment on how poorly the team has responded in trying to fill a position of need for at least eight years.

The evolution of NFL offenses in the last 10 years almost dictates having an elite pass-catching TE who can stretch the middle of the field. Belechik, of course, recognized the trend and is on the cutting edge but he hasn't been the only one. The highly successful Peyton Manning-led Colts offense employed a two-tight end offense as their base offense for a decade with Dallas Clark operating as an H-back. God knows the team has multiple needs but if it picked a quality TE in the first four rounds of next year's draft, I wouldn't complain.

Has there ever been a larger exercise in futility than the Buffalo Bills and their inability to draft a blue chip tight end? Below is a list of tight ends available in the draft who the Bills could have selected and the player they drafted instead (admittedly some cherry-picking involved but not a whole lot)(remember, this has been a position of need during the entire eight year period listed below): 2010 Player picked Tight end passed on Torrel Troup (#2) Rob Gronkowski (pick immediately after Troup) Alex Carrington (#3) Tony Moeaki Alex Carringtn (#3) Jimmy Graham Marcus Easley (#4) Aaron Hernandez 2008 James Hardy (#2) Fred Davis Chris Ellis (#3) Jermichael Finley (this one hurts most of all) 2007 D. Wright (#4) Kevin Boss D. Wright (#4) Brent Celek 2006 A. Youbouty (#3) Owen Daniels 2003 W. McGahee (#1) Dallas Clark (pick immediately after McGahee) The four tight ends we have drafted over this period? Shawn Nelson, Derek Fine, Kevin Everett and Tim Euhus. I like Scott Chandler and think he is an adequate tight end but he's certainly not an elite player. Do they not scout tight ends? Is it bad luck or just more incompetence from the front office?

I was going to start a separate post on this but since there is a McGahee thread might as well put it here. With all the discussion of Gronkowski's college injury and that teams were scared off selecting him, it got me to thinking about McGahee and that McGahee might be the single worst draft pick in Bills' history. Not the biggest bust, but just the worst. Travis Henry was coming off back-to-back 1400 yard seasons (God knows he wasn't a perfect football player or human being but still); Bills still had plenty o' holes; McGahee's injury was so devastating that there was concern that his career was over before it began; and even under the best of circumstances he would miss an entire year of football. And yet, and yet we pick him. (Next pick by Colts was Dallas Clark.) Really, he turned out as well as could be expected. Had a couple of pretty good years. I've never seen anyone who could move the pile for an extra yard or two like McGahee. Traded him for a couple of picks. But it was an absolutely idiotic pick without need of hindsight.

Why Bills lost to Dolphins
st. pete gogolak replied to BuffaloWest's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
You make a valid point. There are meaningful statistics and statistics that don't mean a whole lot. OP's falls into latter category. Point is Dolphins dominated the game. If they didn't get the blocked punt, we still lose. If they didn't get the interceptions we still lose. The one thing the defense did was play stout defense against runs up the middle (Dareus?). Other than that, defense was horrible, especially consideing we weren't playing the Packers. We were playing the freakin' 2011 Miami Dolphins, for crying out loud. -
Why Bills lost to Dolphins
st. pete gogolak replied to BuffaloWest's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Total garbage post. Statistics are for losers. I was at the game. Left with 10 minutes to go in the third quarter after the blocked punt touchdown. Game was over for all intents and purposes after the first quarter. Game was definitely over at halftime. Bills defense was atrocious when it counted. First three times Dolphins had the ball, three touchdowns. Bills had a nice first drive, Fitzpatrick made a crummy third down pass to Johnson and they settled for a field goal. That was it for the offense for the first half. What were the stats for the first half? -
Why isn't Bell starting at LT?
st. pete gogolak replied to Chris in Syracuse's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If you think that they sign Bell as an FA to be a back-up you're nuts. Have you seen LT play around the league? Just based on the first five games, Bell will get a decent pay-day and will be penciled in as a starting LT. I'd like to see it be the Bills but the more likely scenario is to sign Pears (he'll be cheaper) and plug in Hairston at LT unless he completely sucks down the stretch. -
2010 was, in hindsight, the Golden Year for finding a tight end. We passed on Gronkowski for Troup in the second, Jimmy Graham for Carrington in the third, Hernandez for Easley in the fourth. You would have thought that we would have been scouting tight ends, given that it was a black hole for us and has been for 20 years. I find it humorous that Belicheck wasn't worried about the Bills taking the home town kid and didn't feel the need to waste a draft pick to jump ahead of us to take Gronkowski.

Someboy is putting Cowher's staff together for him - Gailey OC and Wanny DC.

For the second time in three years, made the drive from St. Pete to Miami for the game. For the second time in three years left with 10 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter. Their play was bad beyond belief. Where do we go from here? If there is a franchise QB available in the first round (Barkley, Griffen or Jones) draft him. I honestly can't see this team finishing better than 6-10, so it may be possible. If not, draft someone who will make an impact on front seven D. Fire Edwards now and replace him with Wannstadt. Let Wannstadt install 4-3. Why wait until end of season to fire Edwards? I'm not sure Wannstadt is close to the answer (what has he contributed to this mess?) but let's find out. He's been a head coach and a D-coordinator on Super Bowl winners. Deep down, however, I think it's all whistling in the dark. Until the owner dies (not wishing for it, not hoping for it, just saying it), NOTHING WILL CHANGE. When the owner dies, the team will stay or the team will go but until that happens, nothing will change.

Horrible pass on the 3rd and 2 to Johnson. Should have been an easy first down, probably a touchdown. Does that change the outcome of the game. Yeah, it makes the final score 35 - 12. First four possessions of the Dallas game, the D gives up four touchdowns. First three drives of Miami game, D gives up three touchdowns. Not to the Packers mind you. The Dolphins and Matt Moore!!!! That's just bad beyond belief.

Why won't Ralph sell the team?
st. pete gogolak replied to Mr. WEO's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yeah, it's taxes. If he sells now, he has to pay a huge capital gains tax on $700 million (or whatever sales price is) minus a $25,000 basis. Then when he dies, his estate will pay an estate tax. If he holds the team until his death, he avoids the capital gains tax. If he leaves the team to his wife, the estate tax can be pushed into the future and the team could easily stay in Buffalo another 20 years but apparently that is not his intent. -
Is there any doubt we need a FRANCHISE QB ?
st. pete gogolak replied to Reed'scatch83's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
No. None whatsoever. -
Please God, not a return to 7-9 and Jauronvile. It would especially be way too similar to 2008. 9-7 (or better) or 5-11 but not 7-9!!!

Goddammit! There were two unabashed positives so far this season. One was Fred Jackson playing at an All-Pro level and two was an offensive line that looked like it could develop into a dominant unit for years to come. Levitre and Wood were playing at All-Pro levels and Bell looked good, Urbik and Pears looked solid and Hairston looks promising. Wood in the middle is the key. I really wish him well and hope he can make it back from this. If he can make it back from the broken leg, my money is on him coming back at full strength from this. For what it is worth, cheap shot by Ware. Play was over and he hit him in the back. Crummy throw by Fitzpatrick and crummy play by Jones on the ball.

Bills Rooster Turnover 83 % since 2007
st. pete gogolak replied to I hate the Bills !'s topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Don't have any statistics to back it up but my guess is that 83% turnover in four years is about the NFL average. To paraphrase Thomas Hobbes, life in the NFL is nasty, brutish and short. -
Are the Bills the Chicago Cubs of the NFL?
st. pete gogolak replied to Since 1972's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yes, if the Cubs win next year's World Series and if the Bills don't win the Super Bowl until 2068 (if you count the '65 AFL title) or 2073 (if you're counting from the AFL-NFL merger). So actually, no. -
Only one team in the NFL lost money in 2010
st. pete gogolak replied to BuffaloBill's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Total speculation on my part but my guess is that the Bills haven't had a money losing season since 1962. The NBC contract with the AFL kicked in the followng year, which also coincided with the Bills getting better and attracting more fans to their games. Posters always mention the fact that Ralph bought a franchise for $25,000 that is now worth $750 - $800 million. But it's not just the value of the franchise. It's the fact that Ralph has made X million each and every year since somewhere in the mid 60's! Not too shabby! -
Is or is not San Diego the worst coached team in the NFL? How'd you like Norv Turner coaching up your team?

Moats May be an Upgrade Over Merriman
st. pete gogolak replied to prophrox2's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Why not double-down on this topic? The Bills were playing two guys (Merriman and Kyle Williams) who were clearly nowhere near 100% and it showed. Put Dareus on the nose and put two healthy young guns in place of Merriman and Williams and look what happens. Granted the Redskins were depleted on the O-line but still, the D looked great! -
Will this lead to counter-moves by the Colts or the Rams? Signing Todd Collins perhaps?

the 50 worst quarterbacks ever
st. pete gogolak replied to tomdayfan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Terribl list. Jake Plummer as one of the 50 worst QB's in NFL history? Really? It's more of a Top 50 QB bust list but not even that because they mix in late round journeymen. Haven Moses had it right. It would be more fun to rank Top 10 worst QB's in Bills' history. -
All Time Underappreciated Bills
st. pete gogolak replied to st. pete gogolak's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Tony Greene. Absolutely, postively. I guess you're underappreciated when it's your post and you totally forget the guy. The 1975 team. Unbelievable offense plus Tony Greene. When he got hurt that was all she wrote.
