We're talking 1,000 prospects suddenly flooding the talent pool.  Teams will have already filled out their practice squad and if they have already signed offensive linemen they may be content with the guy(s) they have rather than going out and signing a guy who might not be obviously better.  It is advantageous for Buffalo to keep the guy because of his familiarity with the Bills' offense, but he does not offer that advantage to other teams.  I can see where the author has a valid point.

There is is a difference in a prospect who might be really good in 2021– not now. Vs someone who is a vet who could play 1-2 yrs.  the cut of this player had more to do with his contract and capt than his skill.

So, cut a guy that should be on the 53 so you can keep another guy and  "sneak" him on to the practice squad.  If another team is eying a player he becomes more derisible after being selected for the initial 53.

    The bills kept 1 more OL than last year.  And for a couple possible reasons;

Serviceable  OL are in short supply so having an extra is a good thing.  OL is one of the toughest positions to call a guy in on short notice that can contribute.  Is Spain still hurt?

Or, they feel they can trade a guy for players/picks at a later date.

Starter quality offensive linemen are in short supply because of the kinds of offenses run in college.  There are prospects available.  On this particular list, the author contends that Boettger may have been kept because the Bills think they have a better chance of sneaking him on to their practice squad by waiting until after other teams have mostly assembled their practice squads from the talent pool just created by cutdown day.  If McDermott can be upgraded, the Bills will.  If not, Meh, they can keep McDermott.  He's at least serviceable in a pinch.

So the author thinks teams are lazy and stop looking to upgrade after the set their initial roster?   Maybe the author should be writing lifestyle articles and not sports.

"White privilege" isn't that NFL teams necessarily favor specific white players over specific black players.  It's that there seems to be a tendency for white QBs to get more opportunities than black QBs.  Of the 32 NFL teams, only 8 teams -- 25% -- have black starting QBs: Brisett, Jackson, Mahomes, Watson in the AFC and Newton, Prescott, Wilson, and Winston in the NFC.  Before Luck's retirement, there were only 7 black starters in the NFL, and if Haskins beats out Keenum in Washington that will be 9 starters ... in a league where 70 or 75% of the players are black.   The source of this discrepancy is probably not the NFL but rather at the college and high school levels.

Peterman "out played TT" because he played against scrubs in 2017.   After his debacle against the Chargers, the Bills should have been looking for a replacement then.  McDermott was set on Peterman before the first preseason game IMO, and conveniently, McCarron got hurt in the first game.  IIRC, Peterman never played against starters in the 2018 preseason, just as he hasn't played against first team Ds this preseason with Oakland.   It's easy to look good against 3rd and 4th stringers in basic defenses; there a camp phenoms around the league every preseason who do that.   Would even other white QBs get as many chances as Peterman has when his name has almost become synonymous "worst QB ever" in just a handful of games?  I don't know.  Maybe it's "nice guy" privilege.

I recall a preseason game where TT look bad and was hurt early and Peterman came is and played well against the starters.  I believe it was against the Ravens.

I guess when TT was benched with the Browns that was white privilege too....

In a league that gives women beaters second chances, it’s pretty nuts that CK isn’t on a team.  If you are being honest, he is one of the best 40 qbs on the planet.  I do know it has more to do with other things than his color however.

as for EJ, he was right about Peterman thing.  Peterman was given more of a chance here than EJ.

CK was not willing to bet on himself.  He wanted franchise starting contract and many did not believe he is one.  Including many black players like Shady.

The Bills gave Peterman 2 starts and benched him after both. Not including the ones he got due to injury.  I believe he was benched before completing one of those starts.  When he got the start against the Chargers it was more of a TT benching than a peterman starting deal.  TT averaged 185 yards of passing per game that season.

How may starts did the Bills give EJ?

EJ got chances with 3 NFL teams and Peterman is only on his second.....

EJ got Nate Hackett as an OC and QB coach, who had been an OC at Syracuse.   Andrew Luck has Bruce Arians.  EJ got benched after 4 games with a 5 td to 3 int and 80 qb rating.  Not amazing but pretty awful to pull a 2nd year qb for (I’m not biggest Allen fan but I’d be furious if they did that!).

peterman has a career qb rating of 32.5!!!!  All I heard about awful Kaepernick was his last year and he had 90.7 QB rating.

So you honestly think that there are teams that think they could be contenders with Kaep and choose not to because of his color?  If you think QB get chances based on color your nuts!!! The only color in the NFL is green...

If I recall correctly he wanted to be singed as a starter for big money.  If he was willing to sign a 1 year prove it deal he would have been signed in a second.  Why did he choose not to bet on himself?

1). Why anyone would root for Kelly is beyond me.  Dude has been given more chances than most human beings are given in 5 lifetimes and by all accounts, is a total douche.  It’s like rooting for a rich kid who has been handed everything and keeps screwing up.

    2) are we sure he is even good?

    3). EJ got screwed here

4). The Colts will still be a tough team to beat.

5). Love old white guys talking about how played out the race card is.

From what I saw of Kelley he looks like a good prospect but how good we dont know yet.

EJ screwed here?  How about with Oakland and KC ??

I think that EJ Manuel would be a better example of a black QB held to a higher standard than a white QB -- the essence of white privilege --  given how the Bills gave Nathan Peterman multiple chances despite his spectacular failures in both his rookie and sophomore seasons.  I know they were different regimes but it seemed to me that the Bills under McDermott and Beane were looking to get shed of Tyrod Taylor, too, from the beginning.  They certainly made it hard for Taylor to have success as a passer given that they sent his WRs from 2016 -- Watkins, Woods, Goodwin -- packing so they could saddle him with Kelvin Benjamin and Zay Jones.

Peterman played very well in two(now 3) preseasons.  I thought he out played TT in the preseason.  So, the chances he received were earned on the field and not because of his color.

Also, he was earning about nothing so he is a good value toward the risk/reward calculation.

I wouldn't trade for him period.  Besides the trade compensation, he''ll want a huge new contract despite the fact that he's never had even 10 sacks in a season, despite playing on a line with Watt.  Or he'll play out the year and leave in FA.

To be honest Im not a big fan of him,  but if the trade compensation is low like players who may not make the 53 or make the 53 any better, why not?

This year cap space is no issue, and I believe he could be franchised. If he has a good year franchise him and trade for draft capital.   Or  trade him during the season the deadline is after 7 games, there just might be a team that is banged up  need a pass rusher bad.

The biggest problem I see is we already have a solid DE rotation.

You can franchise him, so he's yours, like it or not.  Not saying id do it, but you can lock him down.

so a 2 year rental, not bad.  But the way McBean drafts I would rather keep the picks.  The day will come when they will need to pay Allen and it would be nice to have a bunch of guys on rookie deals...
