We have a game plan offense. There's ups and downs with that. The upside is that it's defensive scheme agnostic - theoretically you should be ok against teams stacking the run, pass defend first, strength back or front - and still be able to do some work. The downside is that game plan offenses don't have a bread and butter staple, and tend to be more finesse than power. It's hard for teams to switch from a power offense to a spread pass game. It's easier to be a spread offense and a finesse, crease, run team. Daboll made a point that he didn't have much interest in having Allen hold the ball long enough to throw more deep balls. He didn't think his protection would hold up, and when that happens you're just hoping you don't end up with a Turn over. If your basic pass protection isn't holding up, then your conventional alternative is turn to a power run game. The Problem is the Bills simply do not have the personell to turn to that. They can run various zone stuff, but the Steelers backers were flying to that. So Daboll did what he thought was his only options left - short to intermediate pass, misdirection runs, QB runs. Didn't work. That's not to say this offense will be lost, or that the Bills won't make the SB. If Allen hits on just 2 deep throws, this game is probably over by the middle of the 3rd quarter. The margin the Steelers were playing in their defensive game plan was extraordinarily thin. But in terms of the Bills. they were basically playing out a worst case scenario on offense. Line can't Pass Pro. Backers were good on Zone runs, Allen wasn't hitting his deep shots.

This I agree with

Which is fine, but there's a lot of context to that. The Steelers really didn't ask much of Ben. He averaged 2.1 seconds to release the ball, which is basically 1 read and chuck it. That meant it was literally impossible to get pressure on him. They built a run-heavy, quick passing game plan that was basically reliant on everything else going right - and even then Roethlisberger needed two pretty bad pass interference calls, and a lucky tip ball - to get points. He basically made a single great throw - the 3rd down in the 4 minute offense that got them into FG range. I think the better conclusion is that the Steelers were able to hide Ben while the Allen couldn't carry the bills to victory on his own. Ben didn't "win" this game - he just didn't lose it.

That's where I disagree with the OP. He was awful outside a few throws in the 4th. Got bailed by out by the ref twice on bad calls, and got lucky with a tip ball for a TD.

Watching the game again this game is all on Daboll

Do think Daboll had too many formation tendencies - at least it was obvious when we were going to run or pass - and the Steelers knew what was going to happen. You can tell by how the Linebackers took their first steps. He wasn't helped by Allen getting frustrated and throwing into double and sometimes triple coverage. Allen clearly stopped trusting his protection, and when that happens, you have an entirely different offense. He's not going through his progressions. Instead he stops at the first half opening and sends it. The best Josh is the Josh that hangs, moves the pocket, and then delivers. Yesterday, he hung, scrambled, and rarely extended the pocket. When 3 of your lineman are struggling that badly with protection, you need to change your protection. Start going 11 & 12 packages, and block with 7, and run routes with 3. Some arrogance involved in thinking that Allen would just be able to deal with that kind of pressure all on his own. Especially when you consider he's having to deal with 6-8 guys in coverage. Dunno, think if the Bills had just used more bodies to protect, that could have settled Allen mentally, and he could back to his thing of finding those 2nd and 3rd windows deeper into the zone. -
9/12/2021 Steelers @ Bills Post Game thread

Feel good that the bills played about as poorly as they can and still hung in there. That blocked punt was a back breaker -
This team probably doesn't need that much practice time. More about fitness, health, and mental prep on gameplan.

McDermott press conference 9/2 and practice updates

I still can't believe the NFL is trying to regulate this. What do they think is going to happen if they don't? All out brawls? Cats hanging out with dogs? Men marrying goal posts? -

With a young QB who's never even faced elite college competition much less NFL regular season competition, you want a run heavy, quick decision, game plan. So that seems really short sighted of the Jets, to ask Wilson to run a full spread offense, which requires a LOT of read/progression stuff. Btw, this makes Knox a pretty intriguing late round fantasy target. If the Bills go TE, they're going to Knox. They're gonna air the ball out a TON, and the defenses are going to game plan around Diggs, Beasley and Davis. Knox is going to get a lot of linebackers on him, and is he's gotten over the dropsies he's gonna get a lot of chunk plays. -

Apparently, The Bills don't need more than 1 pass receiving TE on the active roster, and the rest they want as primarily blocking TEs for goal-line/short yardage. Keep in mind the Bills are keeping SEVEN wide outs. Clearly that's where the other receiving TE position went to. You're looking at an offense that's going to be base 11, often 10, and probably never 12/22 unless it's short yardage. In that sense, Hollister is redundant to Knox, and are comfortable with Quintin Morris (a hybrid WR/TE in college) coming off the practice squad if Knox gets injured. I also wonder if Hollister thinks he'll get a shot elsewhere to be on a 53, so turned down a Practice Squad spot. -
Brandon Beanes Presser today…informative

Wait, the Bills really ARE going 10 personnel as their base?! Madness! I love it! This is something I'd do in Madden haha -

The signs of even better things to come from Josh Allen
appoo replied to jwhit34's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If what we saw is going to regular season Josh Allen then you're looking at a pantheon level QB, and every bit as good as Mahomes. And it looks like they're adding an element of the hurry up whenever Allen wants? This is a TERRIFYING offense -
Will Gabe Davis ever challenge the #1 WR spot?
appoo replied to ChronicAndKnuckles's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
So here the thing, traditionally your X was considered your #1 WR. Why? Because that’s the player who tended to run your deep routes and was your physical specimen. So he’d get the big yards, big TDS and a high yards per catch, and get the big attention. Your Z WR worked off the LOS, your best route runner, the dude you goto to pick up a first down, made life a nightmare for backers, free safeties and anyone between perimeter. Going into the regular season I believe Davis is firmly established has trending towards very good X, while Diggs has established himself as the best Z in the league. I wouldn’t call Davis a #1 because I’m not sure it’s a relevant phrase. But you currently have a WR who do everything you want an NFL X to do -
yea, he got blown up by some of the better WRs he faced. Jahan Dotson posterized him, Bama made a fool of him as well

5th round? If he had come out a season earlier he would have gone in the first 2 rounds.

i have no wish to cut them. I wish for them to follow safety protocols to protect their own availability and their teammates. I really don’t care what they personally think about the virus or vaccine. I really don’t. But when they start endangering the team’s ability to win football games, well yea I care . I mean I’m a Bills fan

It’s fine for these guys to express their opinions but it’s also fine for me to find those opinions to be absurd. Make it make sense Cole? How about no one knows what you’re doing outside the football facility, and you live in a world where there’s a deadly virus that is now attacking people of all ages, and because no one can trust that you’re not a walking virus vector at any given moment, then you better keep your freakin germs to yourself, because while the virus does an INCREDIBLY good job of protecting people from getting sick, it was NOT designed to be a complete barrier from infection itself, and these people have children they go home to, who don’t have the ability to protect themselves, or immune compromised people living with them or in their circle. You walking 5 steps in the facility without a mask on is you potentially spreading delta variant COVID for 5 steps for someone else to catch. Your vaccinated teammates? They have a 5 time less likely chance of catching the virus compared to you, and have a much reduced viral load. The odds of them being a vector to spread is significantly reduced compared to you. Walking around maskless and unvaccinated is almost criminally negligent at this point. Have some ***** respect for your fellow humans. There’s your sense

he’s been getting hit since he’s been 13. He’ll be fine

Dion Dawkins activated from COVID list
appoo replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Feel bad for him and the organization. We have some evidence from European soccer teams, that a bad case of COVID can impact your abilities for months. Kai Havertz is a world class player, who joined Chelsea, got COVID bad, and was affected for basically the rest of the season. Took him a long time to regain his full athletic abilities - a 22 year old elite athlete. Hope Dion comes back soon to full fitness, but also hope he doesn't push himself beyond what his body can do, and that the organization supports him in that -

Kill them early and grind late. However, this isn't neccesarily a formula that works against better teams, or especially a team that has more firepower than yours.
