a little bit of talent on the DL wouldn't hurt either. name one other DC in the league who had the luxury of starting 4 high motor white guys with another one in reserve.

NO Jeff Fischer - even if you have to give back TEnnessee's 3rd rounder or Kirk Ferentz

If you were the new GM and had #1 pick...

Although you don't want to hear it, the best move is to trade the pick for a package of picks/ players. The cost versus the risk of failure is too high for a player with zero NFL experience. -
just wait until Mullarkey is fired mid-season and Marv takes over as HC

New structure has disaster written all over it

The fact that he kept Mullarkey as part of this fresh start could be argued to be his first mistake as Administrator. -

Troy Edwards, another midget WR, is a better comparison to PArrish. The last #1 pick made by Teflon Tom for Pittsburgh. Edwards crashed and burned and was the final nail in Teflon's coffin. Hopefully Roscoe performs better than Edwards -

If you thought Teflon was micro-managing MM's on field decisions, how soon before Marv gets the itch to give some help on the field? -

we don't need to hire 8 or 9. just one give the Titans their 3rd back for Jeff Fischer or get Kirk Ferentz

We fired TD, TC and not MM? Why not hire Sherman?
obie_wan replied to BravinSeattle's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
it was bad enough enduring 2 rookie head coaches-which ultimately cost TD his job. susre makes sense to shift gears and bring in a rookie GM who has never experienced the free agent era. -

with Marv- you won't have to worry about grooming a young QB. Marv has no interest in young players. -
who had the best OC among the fired/departed?

Norv is not going to be getting any head coaching jobs anytime soon. -

In the ultimate irony, Ralph hires Bill Cowher to replace Teflon Tom after he is cut loose by the Steelers after yet another melt down in the playoffs. -
and then there's Walt Corey at DC who was the singel biggest reason the Bills never won the big dance.

what he failed to do was execute the very plan he put in place. He stated he wanted to be a blue collar team that would commit to the run and play tough defense. However, he consistently got side tracked by sexy alternatives. 1. Gregg Williams- should have been fired in middle of year 3 to try to salvage season. TD committed to him then, but then fired him at year end to appease the fans. The team played hard for Williams down the stretch. GW should not have been fired for Mullarkey. 2. Mullarkey is and always has been a gimmicky coach who also favors the pass more than the run. Poor choice to build a smash mouth team. 3. OL- TD continually rotated in new blood but very little proven production in the run and pass game. In fact, the OL that TD assembed did not match the playcalling and play design of his coach. When healthy, Fat Mike played pretty good last year, but MM still failed to run consistently behind him. 4. Drew Bledsoe is a pocket QB who could not exist behind an OL built to run block. 5. Roscoe Parrish- midget WR etc.

keep Wyche as QB coach and hire Norv Turner as OC. He is a terrible HC but he is commited to a power running philosophy.
-
that would work if he would be delegating to Norv Turner as OC and Dom Capers as DC.

If TD is out, Modrak is in and MM its OK (maybe)
obie_wan replied to Fake-Fat Sunny's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
generating yards by trickery is not the same as committing to the run and grinding it out on a consistent basis. He sure didn't commit to the run with a rookie QB who needed the support, but why argue with reality. -

Interesting blurb on Whisehunt which shows some insight to Mularkey's philosophy: Although Mullarkey continually gave lip service to playing smash mouth, he never produced either here or previously at Pittsburgh. Still baffles the mind why Teflon gave MM a 5 year contract to a aguy that was about to be fired by Pittsburgh for his truly "offensive" performance as OC. KEN WHISENHUNT, offensive coordinator, Pittsburgh. "He's what I call a defensive offensive coordinator," said one general manager. "He'll run the ball and rely on his defense." That's what's happened in two years on the job in Steelers, where Whisenhunt took the 31st-ranked rushing offense and turned it into the league's second-ranked unit overnight. OK, so it helps when you have Jerome Bettis in the huddle. But Bettis was there in 2003, too. All I know is that when Bill Cowher made Whisenhunt his coordinator in 2004 he put him on notice that he wanted to return to what the Steelers do best, which was running the ball. It was up to Whisenhunt to provide a solution. Well, he did, and the results speak for themselves -- not only were the Steelers fifth in rushing this season; they're 26-6 in regular-season play with Whisenhunt as a coordinator. Like Rivera, he's been on the job only two years, but don't let that fool you. He knows what he's doing, and people noticed. -
The difference is that on other teams the play design does not require your best WR be a decoy (Moulds 5 yards short of a 1st down) or your best RB on the bench. Playmakers should be put into a position to make plays with the option of going to secondary players. It is just stupid to design plays where marginal players are the focal point in key situations and your playmakers are not involved at all.

dodn't forget 9. Good coaches don't set up their young QBs to fail

he also recognizes the importance of the OL since it coached the positon under Belichek -
Kirk Ferentz Willing To Listen To NFL Offers
obie_wan replied to Mark VI's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
he does have experience running an entire major college program- which is far more important than only being a coordinator at the NFL level (ala our last 2 learn on the job projects) -
it's also play design. Why design plays where your best WR is standing 2 yards downfield on 4th down when you need 7 for a 1st down? Redzone offense is terrrible in that the endzone is never attacked. If you're going to throw on 3rd down, it better be to the endzone.
