TO is worth the risk if you can get him to sign a 1 year contract. Not likley since TO wants a big signing bonus. Unfortunately, TO does not see it as a signing bonus. Since he gets the cash inyear 1, he considers it his year 1 salary. Whatever he gets in year 2 will pale in comparsion and TO will be screaming for a new contract that shows him the proper respect.

The 30% rule pertains to his base salary. Due to the past restructuring, much of the cap is due to unamaotized signing bonus. His base is closer to $5-6 mil I think so the 30% would be applied to that number. You can't reduce the unamortized signing bonus.

Atlanta turned down Cinci's offer of a 2nd round pick for Shaub. We should have drafted Shaub in the first place. some other vets who may come availabe and may be cheap are Aaron Brooks, Brian Griese and Joey Harrington. There will not be much top flight talent OL and DL available on the free agent market that will tie up large amounts of cap. The Bills will need to build through the draft. By replacing Shane Matthews salary, it should not be very costly to bring in another who could actually be a legitimate starting QB.

In buffalo, Harrington will not be paid much and will not cost the team a #1 pick (let alone 3 picks) so the expectations will not far exceed possbile performance. Joey has far more experience than JP and does have some talent that could be harnessed with proper coaching. He would be a far better #3 QB than Shane Mathews and well worth the cost. Anotehr possible QB to consider is Brian Griese if TB cuts him loose due to salary cap and commits to Simms.

the problem has been that Teflon Tom was always looking to make the unexpected, flashy pick in hopes of hitting a homerun. You need to hit a few HRs, but it seemed a disproportionate number of his picks were spent in this manner, didn't pan out and he didn't have a backup plan. This is especially true of teh OL where he consistently relied injured players with previous upside to fill gaping holes. (Ben Sobiesky, Kris Ferris, the list goes on)

This is a major misunderstanding. Marv did not work for any of the front office staff he brought to the Bills. Polian was hired long before Marv and was instsrumental in bringing in Marv and Butler- all associated from their time in the USFL. Polian was fired in 1993. From 1993 thru 1997, Marv was HC but he also was VP in charge of football operations. He did not report to Butler. Typical of Ralph's desire to have a say in the Bills, both men reported to him as President. No picks or trades were made without Marv's approval. The trades for RJ and Billy Joe Hobert were made by Butler after Marv retired. After Polian left and with Marv basically having veto power over all personnel decisions, the Bills made no significant draft day trades- up or down. The stated philosophy was to let the draft come to them. Although anything is possible, based on Marv's prior history and his conservative nature- it is highly unlikely that the Bills under Marv will be making any blockbuster draft day deals.
