The point is that you would not have paid Drew $8.75 mil in 2004. A capable alternative would have given TD leverage to reduce Drew's bloated pay into the $3.5 mil range - which is more in line with his actual production. Not many teams would have been able to free up big money just before the season to bring in a brand new QB - so chances are Drew would have been forced to take the reduction or be cut.

it's not a question of available space. It is a question of value for production from specific positions. Just because at this point in time, there is cap room - TD would be pretty short-sighted to sign someone else's high priced cast off when the expected production doesn't justify the cost. you can get comparable production at G for a lot less than $4 mil / year.

Fletcher will not be signed to a big deal. Too old and too small for a long term big money deal. Look for Bills to draft a LB early as his future replacement.
