I agree that Allen & Dorey were close and that Allen supported Dorsey being hired as OC.  But IMO that is a long way from Allen demanding that Dorsey be hired.  I believe that for a number of reasons this was Beans & McD's preferred option and decision

The obvious things that I have seen are Allen's emotions under Dorsey and after Dorsey was fired.  They have significantly changed as has his style of play.

I read the transcript of the McD NFL channel interview and it was clear that McD was setting the strategic direction of the Bills offense and how Allen was expected to play going forward.  In order for Bean to properly manage the Bills CAP (pushing Allen's money out) he would have been very supportive of this idea as he will increasingly depend on Allen having a long career (> 10 years) playing at an elite level.

Again, I don't think McD was calling plays or sweating the details of each offensive game plan but by all accounts he was setting the strategic goals for the offense and those included curbing certain aspects of how Allen played the game. Dorsey was trying to execute against McD's strategic vision of how the Bills should play offense and handle Allen.

My guess is that McD/Bean abandoned their restrictions on Allen running and other aspects of their offensive operation in the face of not making the playoffs and keeping their jobs.  Perhaps Pegula played a role here? But even if their jobs were safe I credit McD & Bean to be astute enough to be flexible when it was obvious their goal for Allen & the Offense wasn't working.

What are your thoughts on the strategic vision remaining the same, except we now have a much more competent OC?

Thanks! I appreciate that! Looking forward to responding to some of the others here as well later when I have some time.

Been a Bills fan for decades, quit my second job in late teens, a week shy of my two year anniversary/vacation pay, just to watch a Bills game  as they wouldn't give me it off.  I showed them--that company never recovered (Wegmans).

But this Bills team, for multiple reasons, is the one I know best.

Curious as to what your take was on the stuff I said a little later this day and thread, on page 2, on what I defined as the vital elements of the new AD offense and defense, and so, what they would now become, and develop into, as a result now that they were on the right track. Do you think that those things are coming to fruition at a high level now? Do you agree that those are the vital things?  I tried to define the type of team that they were when hitting on all cylinders, what it looks like, a month ago.

A great time to be a Bills fan; just wish all of the Bills fans were appreciating this, and not waiting until they win it all.  The journey is the destination.

(BadOlBillz is just joking, trolling, right? No one can post that stuff in a serious way, actually believe it. Right?  Ignorance at its worst if it is real, though.)

My sense is that the "big picture concept" that Brady is doing is the same "concept" that Dorsey tried to do but in an exceptionally incompetent manner.

What I mean by "big picture concept" is to transition our offense around Allen from one that Allen carries by himself to one that carries him and allows him to make great plays only when we need great plays from him.

Basically, we want to give Allen what Mahomes has had since his 1st day in the league. If you ignore the negative connotation of the top image, you'll see what I mean.

     leadervsboss-min.thumb.PNG.18c7c4b7f4eefae0fcdf4d13260cc1d2.PNG

Mahomes has been carried by the amazing parts around him, which allowed Mahomes to max out his skills and make the great plays only when he needed to. Allen on the other hand, has had to drag the team around him to glory. You saw this at it's peak during the Daboll years where Daboll once ran Allen on a designed QB run during the Bucs, two plays after Allen injured himself. They were running him into the ground.

McDermott and Beane (correctly) made this realization and wanted a new OC who would bring this mentality to the offense. This is where Dorsey came in, and was given the assignment from the bosses, to create an offense that does not live and die with Allen's legs and heroics.

This was actually the right move. The problem was, as you noted in the OP and opened my eyes to, was Dorsey's extreme incompetence at play calling and preparation. The move was right, but the wrong man was given the job.

What we're seeing from Brady is the same concept as the image on the top that Dorsey attempted, but with solid (and growing) efficiency. This is why we are seeing the run game more, Kincaid more, and Diggs and Davis less. We're balancing out the offense the correct way, allowing Allen to use his legs, but not living and dying with his legs and arm like Daboll did. Dorsey unfortunately took some years off of Diggs prime, and may have ruined Davis mentally just as he was ready to breakout.

To answer your question succinctly, I think we want to build a team that can win with Allen as a game manager (like we saw against Dallas), while making the great plays when we need them (the way a true game manager like Purdy couldn't if the chips were on the table and a DE was in his face and his routes weren't ready).

Did anyone not expect the offense to improve later in the season whether they changed play callers or not?

Dorsey began the season with a directive to not get Josh Allen beaten up.

They were playing "not to lose Josh" and just get thru these easy opponents offensively for the last month before Dorsey got canned.

And the reality is they do not have the talent at WR to just make their QB stay in the pocket with the way defense's are attacking big play offense's this season.

Dorsey's exit coincided with the team letting Josh be Josh.   The threat of Allen using every skill at his disposal opens up the run game.   The passing game is still out of sync and very punchless but now that every option is on the table they can look more like they have when they've played with desperation in the past.

This season is not just an extension of last season.......so much has changed beyond just the offensive play caller.

I have no idea what any of this has to do with the OP.

The entire fanbase quit after the Broncos game. The only person with hindsight issues is you.

    Your hindsight is 50/50.......congrats.

The team on the field now is not the same as the one at the end of last season..........the talent on offense is significantly better.......guys like Torrence/McGovern/Kincaid weren't with the team..........and the development of Spencer Brown and James Cook among others has been significant they weren't nearly the players they are now.    And they've been healthier.

On defense they aren't just relying on Tim Settle and Ed Oliver to rotate as the 1 tech like they were in that Cinci game........Leonard Floyd and Rasul Douglas are big upgrades at key starting positions.........with the pass rush and LOS play improved the back 7 in general is more effective even though last years back 7 had Milano and Edmunds.

There is no doubt they were emotionally sapped at the end of last season and they also didn't have the horse's to overcome it against a strong Cinci team(unfortunately even with the Bengals OL banged up) like they did versus Miami the week before.

Look at the date he wrote the post. A few days after Dorsey was fired.

This guy made the best prediction I have ever seen a poster make on TBD.

I am legit worried now that Miami is going to steamroll Dallas too. Dallas almost has to play a light box against Miami if Hill plays. And if they couldn’t stop our running game, they aren’t going to stop the dolphins’ running game.

Dallas should be all healed up from whatever bug they had this week.

The fact this thread only has 11 pages 2.5 hours after the game shows that fans dont have anything to complain about (refs, playcalling, etc)

So I’ll complain. Wish Cook caught that TD cause he deserved it especially on that drive.

This was such a good game because the coaches basically stuck to what worked and didn’t try to get tricky and make themselves look like the smartest guy in the stadium. Just kept running Cook.

I was actually surprised not a single holding call was made all night. Feel like that is pretty much routine for us to see 2-3 a game

Great point. Absolutely nothing to complain about. No trolls or negative Nancy’s tonight.

Some hand wringing in the playoff odds thread though.

The Texans win against the Titans really hurt in that regard. Both the Texans and Colts are likely to be 10-6 when they meet. Browns have the Jets to get their 10th. Bengals have the Steelers and Browns to get to 10. They all would hold the tie-breaker against the Bills. Colts may be the weakest of those teams and conceivably could lose to Atlanta or LV, and perhaps the Browns could beat the Texans next week, but that only opens up 1 slot for the Bills as a 7 loss team and they need 2.

Unexpected losses happen every week. It will all shake out in our favor. NO WAY that everything goes against us if we win out. These negative scenarios would only play out if we lose 1 of our next 3.

Don’t know if this has been pointed out by other posters yet, but lots of money has been coming in on the Bills for this weekend and even the Super Bowl.  When the books want the Bills to lose, makes me nervous.

”The Buffalo Bills were consensus 2-point favorites over the visiting Cowboys in the weekend's marquee game. FanDuel reported Thursday that the Cowboys-Bills game was setting up to the one most popular with bettors of the season. "We are in another unusual position where a Cowboys cover would actually be a big win for the book, as an ever-growing liability continues to come in on the Bills," a FanDuel representative said in a company release. Sportsbook PointsBet also has reported a surge of betting interest on the Bills to win the Super Bowl. Since Nov. 27, the Bills had attracted more bets and more money in PointsBet's odds to win the Super Bowl than any other team.”

Bills are a strong team with low odds because of their record. It’s a great bet for a sharp.

I get they won last night but they are something like 9-21 in close games in the past 3 years. That's coaching.

And also extreme amounts of poor situational awareness which comes down to preperation and knowing how to finish games. This coach doesn't have it.

You’re reaching. There’s always a negative reason why a team with that kind of point differential is near .500.

It always evens itself out eventually.

but they gifted us wins against the Giants and Bucs by not calling blatantly obvious DPI in the end zone on final plays.

over 17 games, I'll guess that it all evens out and finally you need to best from scrimmage and healthy at the end of the season to have success

Yes and no. Rewatch the final drives in both those games. The refs put the Giants and Bucs in those positions with iffy calls.

They did lose to us, and we played against them so well in the playoffs it went all the way down to the wire in OT. I don't know what your ***** point is saying if you add better players to them they'd win, we have players out that if they were healthy would be better, if we had better # 2 WRs we'd be better. Like what is the ***** point none of this is true and none of it is happening now. Maybe both of our teams will take a shot at WR in the draft who knows.

He’s a salty troll who’s reaching. Ignore him.

I get it. I had season tix at the jags back then , even as a lifelong BILLS fan.  If the BILLS had won that game ( music city miracle) , they were coming to JAX and i am certain with that D, they would have beat the jags to go to the SB.

So we have the lead , i am watching at home in the exact same position in front of my tv that i watched wide right , and the comeback happen from , and I have a history og going to SB 27/28 LIVE BECAUSE i knew we had to win at least one in my lifetime!   IF WE WIN, i have tix in row 8, 32 yd line , right BEHIND THE BILls bench here in Jax stadium !

You can imagine my disbelief, my heartbreak , watching that happen.   In a few seconds my fandom and sports hobby world is forever changed for the bad , once again at the hands of my beloved BILLS!  You have to have experienced it, been thru it to totally appreciate that sickening feeling as wycheck throws the pass and DYSON, i believe, takes it with a convoy to the end zone to beat a much better BILLS TEAM.  Rob Johnson had come thru over FLUTIE; WADE was coaching so well, the d was playing great , the team peaking for a SB in 1999/2000  i believe to be the year. Then it all disappeared.  Plus , it was getting very expensive for the two club seat season tix i had since even before the inaugural season of the jags , and i had decided this was to be  my final year to keep paying so much to support the jags !   After all, it was just interfering with me watching the bills live on TV and despite living in Jax, i could never really be a jags fan as i had started following the bills in 1963!

So it happens. The following week i went to the playoff game here in Jax as my BILLS WATCHED in BUFFALO , where the titans led by McNair , came in and thrashed the jags to go to the SB!  There i was , behind the TITANS bench in Jax, now filled by many titan fans who obviously paid huge bucks to travel and come to Jax .  The titans went to the SB, PLAYED THE RAMS , and lost as they were tackled a yard short of the end zone.  It should have been the BILLS playing in that SB, and i think that D would have shut down whoever they played and I really believe in my heart, we would have gotten that elusive SB!

Yet , ITS 24  years later , and here we are.   We still have not gotten that SB;   And we were one off side , one call away from seeing A SIMILAR VERSION of THAT THROWBACK PLAY work against us and probably  end this years playoff hopes.   You have To have been in that time to fully appreciate the context of forever seeing that play shown over, and over, and over.    Imagine that play but now with KELCE/ TALOR SWIFT/ MAHOMES/ KC/ AND RAMPANT PERVASIVE SOCIAL MEDIA being present to glorify it in light of all the concerns / questions about mcds coaching and in light of the article and all things surrounding the bye week!  Seriously , i would have quit watching football this season, and being 66 years old, i might have considered not watching the BILLS much more as i have been thru and experienced all the SB’S and all the classic , horrific , stressful, memorable ways to lose.   Thank GOD for that one call !   LOL!

So , i get your respect for wycheck. I still feel the  same as it was a great play, and it saddens me to hear about his terrible demise.   If someone is critical of you mentioning the MCM, putting it to rest , they don’t understand.  You honor his memory by remembering his name and his association with it and BILLS HISTORY. He will continue to always be remembered for that play and by all accounts for being a good  person as well. There is no way i would believe you meant any disrespect.   I was there in spirit with you during that time. Thank GOD there was not a second version today ;  Bills fans of this generation don’t deserve to experience that type  of  emotional  pain.  For once, the ball and flags fell the right way, and we still have a shot at that elusive SUPERBOWL.   Merry CHRISTMAS BILLS MAFIA!

Great post. I’m younger than you but I watched that play live and it sank my heart for days.

Since the play today was Kelce lateraling and Swift was in the stands, today would’ve been a pop culture moment.

Thank God Toney saved our season and a pantheon level blow to the gut.
