Yep. I can't imagine McDermott being happy with the offense given how the defense kept them in most of the games lost this season. He's probably aware that this team could have been much better with an at least average offense. This has to weigh on his post season evaluations.
No, they did not lead the league in scoring last season. But were 16th ranked total offense according to ESPN. This year they are 29th.
Tyrod is not a great QB, which we know, but Dennison stubbornly forced him into a west coast offense system developed by Mike Shanahan and similar to what John Elway ran in the late 1990s.
I had people at work tell me that the Jags/Bills game was terrible. Have to agree with this if you're not a Bills or Jags fan.
IMO, Carolina/NO was the best game this weekend.
Excellent post and good summary of the issues plaguing the offense this year. What it boils down to is that Dennison and Tyrod cannot co-exist; two different styles that mix like oil and water.
Shaw, you rightfully criticize Tyrod, who had a terrible game. I do think you let Dennison off the hook in this loss. Why did we stop running the ball in the second half? We had their DLine sucking wind in the second quarter, but we let up on that and favored the pass more in the second half. Not sure why that was; continue what was successful until Jax proved that they could stop it, which they didn't.
I see your argument. The problem with taking this approach is that we have a good chance of taking a step back next year. Goff and Wentz took a full year to develop into what they are now. Plus both teams needed to add talent this past off season. We would have to be prepared to take a step back next year in order to take steps forward 2+ years from now.
In your scenario, we get a QB for sure. But what if he doesn't pan out, or does not live up to expectations? We wasted a lot that could have otherwise been used for much needed upgrades. Again, we need to draft a QB, but it is a crap-shoot..even top 3. Spending that much draft capital doesn't make sense when you have as many needs as we do.
Re-sign Wright, Johnson, and Gaines. Wright isn't terrible depth for Gaines, and hopefully with an upgraded DLine, the secondary will look even better. Johnson is a great open field tackler, but coverage has a lot to be desired.
QB isn't the only position that needs to be upgraded. I agree we probably need to trade up, but more in the 10-15 range where the cost makes more sense.
Seems pretty fair. Frazier might be a B+ since we got really sloppy against the run earlier this season. Today, I think he could have adjusted more when Bortles was running all over the place by placing a spy on him. He seemed a bit complacent at times.
What is a fair grade for special teams? Didn't see this. My opinion is a solid B. Too many dumb block in the back and holding penalties.
Why did Dennison go away from the run in the second half? We were starting to tire out the Jags DLine in the second quarter. Then Dennison decided it was time to pass? Why? Too many bad decisions from him, like it's Dennison's first year as an OC.
Thanks for the kind words @PatsFanNH
Besides the obvious QB issues, I want to see us upgrade both lines. We loose way too many battles in the trenches, we have to win those.
I would not be disappointed if we were able to get Alex Smith. Still has a couple of years left in him, which is enough to develop a rookie QB we (hopefully) draft.
But what is inexplicable is why we went away from running and wearing out the Jags DLine. We were doing well in the second quarter, but seemed to go away from this in the second half.
