Definitely NOT overrated. It is known he has some problems with run support. However, he is biggest playmaker in our secondary. When you don't have a pass rush, these are the guys that you need. The guy just makes plays something that is lacking with the rest of our defense. He is only in his 2nd year and has shown pretty good awareness with all his interceptions. While he needs to still work on a few things there is a ton of upside. Something that can't be said for Whitner, Scott, Wilson. Those 3 are what they are - good back up players on most NFL teams. Byrd would be one of the few untouchable players on this team IMO.

Our offense will be better with Fitz because he will actually throw the ball down field. However, this team is bad and most noteably the defense is much worse than previous years and won't be able to keep us competitive in games the offense can actually put up some points. Don't worry we will have a top 5 pick. I wouldn't be surprised top 3 or even #1 overall. We will (should) draft a franchise quarterback.

Florence and Byrd played bad as well. Since we are talking safeties in this thread I am willing to give Byrd a pass because it is only his 2nd year in the league. He is still learning. Byrd is flawed in a few areas like the running game and still makes some mistakes in coverage that he needs to improve on. However, Byrd has the ability to cover a lot of field and he just knows how to make plays like what the elite safeties in the league do. He is a ball hawk and even though he had a bad game, still had a fumble recovery. Elite safeties get and force turnovers. On the other hand we have Whitner, a top ten pick in his 4 or 5th year and is a total non-factor on this defense and still makes rookie mistakes. His awareness in coverage is below average and doesn't show the ability to be a playmaker. His progress of where his talent level should be is the most disappointing. Haven't any of us noticed when he has been injured over the years, we have not lost a step in the safety position?

Going 8-8 is not worthy of any recognition no matter the state of an organization. Now going 1-15 in one year and then turning it around and going 10-6/11-5 in the next, winning the division and making the playoffs, then kudos!

I wouldn't be touting the Chiefs and their upper management just yet. Wait till much later or after the season. It wouldn't surprise me in the least, them starting 3-0 and not making the playoffs.

Where is the Outcry about the Defense?
BuffaloBillsForever replied to NaPolian8693's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Didn't you just start a thread that Kelsay needs a contract extension? He is one of the problems with this defense. We are not good on defense and what I think this game showed was how over hyped our secondary is being touted as the strength of our defense. What stood out today was how bad our safeties and corner backs played today. I am used to the usual linebacker and DE talk but guys like Florence and Whitner played just as bad. On defense I only really have hope for players like Byrd, McKelvin and Kyle Williams. -
Kelsay Deserves the Extension
BuffaloBillsForever replied to NaPolian8693's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Kelsay is a below average player in the defensive scheme Chan Gailey is implementing now and for the future. Giving him a contract extension would be counter-productive. As to the logic that someone has to play linebacker in the coming years, how about draft that position and have that person start or pick someone up in free agency that is better and more expensive or better and at a lower cost. It wouldn't be that difficult to replace him in either situation. There is no rush or need to extend Kelsay. -
Byrd sometimes has problems against the run and didn't play that well today either however he has done more in a single season than Whitner has done in his entire career. Byrd makes plays as was evident in all his interceptions last year and his fumble recovery today. Byrd has shown the ability to be a game changer in playing less than a full year than what Whitner has done with his tenure with the Bills so far. Elite safeties are playmakers and intimidating which show the ability to have impact on the outcome of games - neither qualities Whitner has shown with his super high draft status. In fact he was a liability today.

I know Roscoe has had a few good punt returns over the years and a nice play against the Giants a few years ago but IMO I think this was one of the best games he has played as a Bill. Not big plays, but ran good routes, got open and made some plays.

Its a wake up call that our secondary is not that good along with the rest of our defense. Some of it can be due to the lack of a pass rush but there were a lot of mistakes by our safeties and corner backs today both in the run game and some horrific zone coverage with our safeties on the deep ball today. Remember Whitners whiff in the Miami game on that deep ball in which WR dropped that easy touchdown. These are re-occurring mistakes that are happening on a week to week basis.

Its obvious Donte is not a playmaker like the elite safeties. He is not even a punishing tackler. Average against the run, just pathetic in coverage playing over the cornerbacks. I don't even consider him to be up to the caliber of a starting safety in the league. Pathetic performance today. Marv's debacle as G.M can be summed up with this one pick. P.S. Maybin is a total non-factor.

i would still take spikes fletcher bledsoe
BuffaloBillsForever replied to loserlovers's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't know what Fletcher did in the second game this year but in Washington's opener he was all over the field making plays. He was one guy on Washington's defense that stood out. Yeah, he can still play and is probably better than POZ and Mitchell. -
Kelsay performance was once again embarrassing. If you take into consideration what he is getting paid I don't know who is playing worse Trent or Kelsay? Its obvious with Gailey's approach to install and build a 3-4 for the future, Kelsay will not be on this team next year.

Little doubt our O-Line is the NFL's worst now
BuffaloBillsForever replied to billsfreak's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Even when Edwards DOES have time to step up into the pocket to make a throw he gets rid of the ball to early. Either dumped off to a back or a WR 3-5 yards in the middle of the field. Yeah, our offensive line has been bad but our biggest problem is the quarterback situation. IMO Edwards is the worst of all the quarterbacks. I have never seen a quarterback in the NFL that is either afraid or unwilling to make a 10-20 yard throw. How often are we going to see 3rd and long (8+) yards and have him throw to a rb/wr/te 3 yards downfield. -
THE FACTS ABOUT KELSAY
BuffaloBillsForever replied to Dr. Trooth's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Kelsay is a shining example of the dis-function and poor decision making of the Buffalo Bills organization the past ten years. He was the starting DE because we have no one better and they have not addressed this position properly in the draft which is why he has kept his job over the years. In terms of DE he would a 2nd to 3rd string player on most teams. In terms of playing linebacker, he should not be even on a NFL team. -
Levy really set this franchise behind when he became GM. Picked a horrible head coach and his draft classes were failures. It all started when he picked a saftey as the 6th overall pick...please.

Trent, Study Joe Flacco!

This is specifically what Trent needs to start doing. -
Trent, Study Joe Flacco!

Good post. I wholeheartedly agree. I will also add that Flacco remains very calm at all times - never seems to get rattled. -
Edwards does better than Sanchez...
BuffaloBillsForever replied to Decimus Cometh's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Flacco had to handle quite a bit of pressure from the Jets defense tonight. -
Trent, Study Joe Flacco!
BuffaloBillsForever replied to BuffaloBillsForever's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yup. Neither are great athletes. I was totally impressed with Flacco tonight. He handled that Jets pressure very good and made some nice tight throws to some well covered defenders. -
Edwards does better than Sanchez...
BuffaloBillsForever replied to Decimus Cometh's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The problem with this thread is Sanchez is already overhyped and the Baltimore Ravens Defense is in a totally different class than Miami. Apples and oranges comparison. If you want to watch a real quarterback and what Trent should be at this time, take notes on Joe Flacco. I don't consider Joe in the same category as Brees, Manning, Brady et al. but he makes smart decisions and moves the chains. -
Ray Lewis is a BEAST!
BuffaloBillsForever replied to mellaman101's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Ray Lewis is one intense and focused SOB when he is on the field. I consider him to be in the group of all-time great football players.
