I work with some docs who do work in GBS... Like a lot of neurological conditions, it’s a very complex disease. Death or complete and total recovery can be in the cards, as well as just about any point in between.

Do we have to quantify it in order to decide how much is acceptable? Those two !@#$s behind us was more than enough for me. I actually did, it’s the other place I’ve lived besides WNY and NC. Sorry, i know it’s hard to face, but it’s true. Granted, I lived in the RTP area of North Carolina, which is fairly “cosmopolitan.” But I spent plenty of time in the sticks down there too, all over the south. I think part of it is that the south had to confront their race relations in very public ways from reconstruction, to the Jim Crow era, to the civil rights movement, while northern states largely got to think “well, that’s not a problem here.”

The point wasn’t that we got rid of him because he was black, the point was that a non-zero percentage of the fan base was happy we got rid of him because he was black. Like the two guys with seats in the row behind us who reveled in calling him a “dumb n———“ on a number of occasions. I lived in the south for a decade, but by far the most heinous, racist **** I’ve ever heard out of people’s mouths has been in WNY.

Sadly, very often with mental illness, if the person isn’t willing to admit they need help and seek it themselves, there’s little friends or family can do. A fraternity brother of mine went through a very dark period a few years ago. He was off his meds and just completely spiraling out of control, documenting it all on social media. It was very eerie and very sad, yet I’m sure many here would’ve called it “funny” if they didn’t know him. The rest of us from the frat had a massive online discussion about it, asking for advice from brothers in law, medicine, social services, etc. Bottom line was, unless he was imprisoned, it was on him to comply with mental health care. A bunch of guys talked to him, including a few who had had their own struggles. He finally got his **** together, remarried, and is even able to have time with his young son again. I know nothing about Richie’s condition or any diagnosis, but I know that most everyone carries some kind of weight with themselves, deep down inside. It needs to be ok to be able to talk about it and get the help one needs. We don’t laugh and point at the jaundiced person (“LOL, bro is all yellow”) when they have liver disease. “Mental health” is just “health.”

Yeah, “narrative” absolutely applies here. It’s why dunderheads like Mel Kiper continue to blast Allen. His narrative was that Allen was a huge reach, and he’ll stick to it until Allen (hopefully) proves him wrong and then we won’t hear a public comment on Allen from Kiper ever again.

Yes, but I believe it was against Cleveland’s second stringers. But I don’t say that to take anything away from Allen. I’m very happy with how he’s done to this point and am hoping he takes the next step by starting next week. It’s the most I’ve ever looked forward to a preseason game, between Allen and the great storyline with the Bengals. Gonna be a fun day.
