  1. You're right. Those radios added a whole new dimension to viewing the game,
  2. Sure has! Does anybody know if there's been a book published about the old Rockpile days? I think a compilation book of stories from players, fans, coaches, the press corps......everyone who worked or was at the Rockpile would be a pretty entertaining book.
  3. Augie, yeh, my brother for years would attend games with his transistor to his ear so he could get Van Miller's play by play. "Do you bill-lieve it?"
  4. My favorite Rockpile memory? I'm going with the assumption that one was at the Rockpile. So,..... September 1967, right after my senior year in high school. Jets (with Joe Namath) at the Bills. During the game Namath did one of his j jump-passes, and I was astounded at the height he got, even with those legendary bad knees. I swear his feet were 4 ft off the ground! Bills won the game, everyone was feeling great as we were filing out of the stadium. Someone had a transistor radio and "Brown-eyed Girl" was playing, sung by Van Morrison. Oddly enough, I didn't know it at the time, but the next time I saw a game at the Bills, was 1987. My best AFL moment? Easy, the 2 championships won by the Bills. The league had a great rapport with its fans. Most of the stadiums were small, like the Rockpile, and fans from the seats could talk to the players during the game. This helped develop in a big way a strong bond with the players, literally like they are part of your family. That legacy still strongly exists with we Bills fans! This has been a great topic.
  5. Ha! Calvin, I remember seeing him at halftime. Thanks for the memory K-9. I remember you telling this story before. Its my best Rockpile story ever.
  6. Well Kelly, FWIW, I'll pitch in with my favorite, and why. Like I said, FWIW, the Alouettes. Because I like the French heritage up there. I think it would be interesting if they could have a team in Quebec. That would give the league an even more of a international flavor.
  7. So what team in the CFL do you like?
  8. Thanks Augie. You're a class act.
  9. You're right John. That relationship I believe was cultivated right from the beginning when the AFL was young, the stadium seats here were closer to the field where you could interact w/ the players, and the city is not a mega-city like NY or Chicago for instance. Those things enhanced and deepened the relationship the fans had/have with the team. And finally John, this is my 1000th post on the message board. A special one for me. I can't think of a better topic to post it than this one! Thanks for giving me the opportunity. Go Bills in 2016
  10. The Rochester Scalpers, ouch, in more ways than one.
  11. CBF, perhaps I got a little over-caffinated with my post. Evidently it reminded you of something that's very distasteful to you. I would watch a little CFL while growing up in WNY. I do think it's way better than some of these other "weird" sports. But when it come to pro football, it's all about the Bills for me. I live much further south than WNY, and during a CFL season, I might watch one game. Besides, didn't Marv coach the Argos along time ago?
  12. Got that right. And besides, Go Argos!
  13. Yup, John. Non-Bills fans just don't get it. Go Bills in 2016
  14. Excellent! Excellent, Jack. How did you find that one?
  15. Yes, I remember that, too, Pride. Nice icon with your post by the way. Go Bills in 2016
  16. Then stay over on the north side, Mr Snooty!
  17. The pool place you're referencing, was that Mulligan's?
  18. Don't know what to do? For this thread, any corny joke line(s) that comes to mind. Like my examples at the start of this thread. Another example: If its a (you can use any animal to fit a punchline) then you create the punchline. "There was this St Bernard wandering around in our neighborhood. So my neighbor and I fed him dog treats, took his barrel of brandy, and partied all night.
  19. I was checking out Sports Page on Midlo a year and a half ago. The only game they allow the sound on is what they consider the "main game, and that's usually the Redskins." Plus she added "We have a lot of Steeler fans here." Buzz kill! There's no way I'm going to a place where I can't get sound for a Bills game, PLUS it's full of Steelers fans? They might as well be pumping in poisonous gas through the A/C system!
  20. Only us transplanted western New Yorkers know.
  21. Does anybody know the root of his liking the Bills? Alls I remember is something he shared long ago about in his early days in sports radio, he reported the Bills games. Something like that. I'm kind of sketchy on the details. Yeh, he seems older than that. Doesn't he?
  22. "'Too young to hang'em up." Does that mean he's staying around longer so he can get a bigger social security check?
  23. Loved him during the Bills playoff & SB years. But yes, especially in the later/more recent years, he turned into a real jerk. Or maybe he was like that anyway and in his later years he let that out more. Who knows.
  24. Is that where you watch Bills games? We have a better place.
