  1. to what? who?

TT doesn't turn the ball over, gives the Bills an added threat of the run, and will continue to improve his reads and finding open receivers. TT is our best option for the next couple of years at least. He directed a decent scoring offense as well.

  2. I don't have an issue that they fired Rex, but I do wonder if this will have a negative impact on our coaching search.

    1. Is it really necessary for any team to fire a coach with 1 week left in the season? Just feels like you are making an example out of them and no coach is going to want to have that done to them nor get behind doing it to another colleague.

    2. Sounds like part of the reason was because our GM wanted to see a different QB play...that is not something potential coaches like to see from a team, a front office dictating the coaches game plan and game day starters, no matter what the reasons.

    3. The 1 game left was against the Jets, and there is no secret that Rex enjoys beating his old team, and to fire him the week before the game...a meaningless final game of the season...just looks petty and vindictive. Of course, it doesn't mean it was vindictive, but I have lots of people texting me about saying it was pretty messed up to do before the Jets game, so who knows how potential coaching candidates see it.

    4. To those on the outside looking in, he wasn't a disaster like the Jax debacle. We should beat the Jets, and had he coached that game he would have been .500 in 2 years despite all the injuries working against this team to many of the players we couldn't afford to be without.

Top candidates generally have several options every year...Buffalo already has its small market and vicious winter weather working against it. They have 17 years of missed playoffs working against them. It appears we have a big QB issue or question mark going into next year with only a raw QB locked in to be here who wasnt good enough to start in college even after a National Championship fill in on his resume. We play in the same division as the Pats. We have an old stadium. We have a ton of FA's going into the offseason. Our draft pick slot isn't going to likely be top 15.

So with those things already working against us in any coaching or FA recruitment, why add to it by making such a loud move against Rex that might add more reasons to make this job less attractive?

Note: If Lynn is the guy, this likely has no impact...but Lynn also is rumored for the Rams job, so we may have competition for him.

I agree with much of what you stated. The exception is that the entire reason for the timing of the firing was to keep TT off the field to avoid injury. I also agree with other posts that Lynn looks to be the next HC. This makes sense. The offense was not the problem. If Lynn picks a suitable DC we could be in good shape next year.

  3. To win a SB, you need an above-average coach and an above-average QB. TT is probably an average-at-best QB. Therefore, you need a QB. EJ is nowhere near average. This isn't a playoff team next year. Cut EJ, keep TT around as a one-year bridge, and either draft a QB that you're going to give significant tryout minutes to or trade for a backup and find out if he's the next big thing. If nothing is going anywhere after six games, tank like a mother and get a high pick for next year's crop.

If you look at this season, if our defense had lived up to the expectations Rex created, We would have made the playoffs. With a stronger defense, we should have beaten the Seahawks, Steelers, Dolphins, and Raiders. If nothing else changes next year except an improved defense ( and obviously a new HC) we would have a strong chance to make the playoffs.

  4. Ok let's be real, Tyrod Taylor has produced 7,100 yards worth of offense 46 TD's and 15 turnovers in his 29 games. Yes he has passing diffencies but what better options are available? How does the QB position get better?

Cardale Jones will be the response of many but what do we know? You want to stake the future of the franchise on a guy who hasn't played one snap in real game action.

Draft a guy. Who? There's no one in this draft that's a franchise guy. Watson is a TT clone.

Trade? For whom? Think Tom Savage will be made avaulable? Jimmy Grapallo. Maybe but you better be right as that's a 1st and 4th for sure.

Sign someone. Again who? No quality QB become UFA? Kurt Cousins isn't gonna hit he market.

In the end, the team is gonna bite the bullet and pick up the contract of Tyrod Taylor.

What you have stated so clearly makes so much sense. I do not want to believe the Bills management is so inept that they would let TT go after this season with no viable successor in place to quarterback the team in 2017. The sad truth is, the are.

  5. Antiquated organizational structure. Whaley was on the radio last week saying "I'm in charge of the 53, Rex the 46." Now we're hearing that Rex's desire to play Tyrod this week was the last straw. So again, get a president of football operations to oversee both GM and coach because Pegulas have zero clue.

Whether Whaley is retained or not, I believe that the coach should report to the gm, not directly to the Owner.

  6. MAJBobby.....I am unsure on TT. Some of his issues I don't think are correctable. I think if the coaching and/or system was different TT would do better. But, that is just my opinion. I think with Marrone (I know Marrone didn't coach TT, but, these last two HCs share many issues that drive me crazy) and Rex (and their staffs) they both play not to lose the game (old school thoughts that don't work now). I hate that approach. With those approaches I believe their play calling is too conservative and isn't beneficial to the QBs and handicaps them during the games finding rythyms and their long term improvements.

So, I think with a different staff, TT would be better. Is he the answer, probably not. But, I think he has the ceiling to be the 10-15th best QB in the NFL. Will he get there, not sure.

I also think he is worth keeping if there isn't a better option.

I am more focussed on fixing the long term issues. QB is not the issue IMO. Russ Brandon will stay and I think that is a HUGE problem. I am fine with Whaley, but, if we clean out everything and Whaley goes, so be it. Rex is a huge problem and the FO structure.

    H

    Just my thoughts.

I agree with you 100 percent. Retain TT. He will atleast be a bridge until the next "franchise qb" can be found.

  7. I have been on the fence regarding TT this year. After looking at his stats over the last 2 years, a strong case can be made for retaining him by picking up his option.

TT QBR for 2016 to date is 89.6. That ranks him 17th. A solid mid level starting qb. He is rated ahead of Philip Rivers, Carson Palmer, Eli Manning, Cam Newton, Brock Osweiler, and the over paid Fitzmagic plus others.

    Other 2016 TT statistics

In AFC conference games, TT ranks 16th with a QBR of 90.2

If you look at home games, TT QBR is96.5 and ranks him 13th.

Division games TT QBR is 95.4 and is ranked 11th.

Over the last four games (Raiders, Steelers, Browns, Fins) TT has a QBR of 94.3

Over the last 2 games (Browns and Fins) TT has a QBR of 113.4 which ranks him 6th.

More recently, TT has been throwing over the middle and his ability to finding open receivers has shown improvement.

I do not believe you can look at TT's total passing yards Y-T-D as an accurate comparison to other qbs. The "Ground and Pound" has limited the potential for racking up big yards per game. Also, with a decimated WR corp, any qb can only do so much.

Comparing 2016 with 2015, yes his completion percentage and QBR is down, but is total passing yards 3,023 with one game remaining vs 3,035, Net passing yards 2,831 vs 2,823 and interceptions 4 vs 9, are improvements.

TT is showing improvements in many areas of his game. He has a long way to go, but considering that we have few better options for QB in 2017 I believe we should retain him going forward by either picking up his option or renegotiating his contract.

People on this board speak about continuity, Well having continuity at quarterback is a good start.
