Everyone Talks Trade Up For QB, But What If....
hondo in seattle replied to H2o's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm against packaging our first two round draft picks for a QB, let alone a LB. The mere concept gives me Sammy Watkins nightmares. We have too many needs. I don't want to use both picks on one guy. (Then again, if we used two 1st round draft picks to get a 12+ year HOF signal caller, I'd change my tune). -
Bon Jovi on Howard Stern Talking Buffalo Bills
hondo in seattle replied to K D's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't know what the truth of this was, nor do I care. I'm just happy that loyal Buffalo backers like the Pegulas now own the team. And I thank Ralph for doing everything he could to keep the Bills in Buffalo. -
Why doesn't the NFL change Defensive PI to 15 yards?
hondo in seattle replied to Rubes's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't like that PI is a subjective thing. A little pushing and shoving is okay but a lot gets you a flag. The ref's judgment makes all the difference. They need it make it more black and white. Any non-incidental contact before the ball on either player should be a penalty. -
Neither excited nor dismayed, just curious. He was not successful as an OC in prior gigs. But that was years ago in crappy situations. I wonder how much he learned since then under Belichick and Saban, and during those years when he had a chance to reflect on how he might do it differently if he had the chance to be a NFL OC again.

Zay Jones played injured all season...
hondo in seattle replied to Domdab99's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
A shoulder injury could explain some of the drops. It doesn't explain the lack of separation. Then again, he was just a rook. Some WRs need a year or two to adapt to the NFL. -
Why not? If Beane and McD are determined to get rid of Taylor, they will regardless of the OC. Personally, I'm not in favor of releasing/trading Taylor until we get someone better. Hopefully that happens soon.

Thanks for those stats. You can slice it or dice it a number of ways. It's hard though not to conclude that the offense regressed under Dennison.

Who do you want for OC?
hondo in seattle replied to Ittakestime's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I won't say I "want" Daboll but I'm intrigued. He was the OC for three NFL teams over the course of four years. He has experience. Then again, his offense never finished above #20 in yards. The intriguing part is that he was an offensive assistant with the Patriots after being an OC. I wonder how much he learned and how much that experience shaped his current coaching philosophy. He didn't work for a slouch last year at Bama, either, by the way. He's had good mentors. -
Who do you want for OC?

Roman strength is that he's a guru at run designs. He's not great at coordinating a passing attack. And I've heard there are issues with his interpersonal and leadership skills. Lynn did better with Roman's plays than Roman because he was (1) a better playcaller and (2) a better leader. -
You may be right. Rico seems to lack intellectual flexibility. But maybe he'd be successful with a different offensive roster and - especially - a different QB. But I believe you have to hold people accountable for actual results and not spend too much time on hypotheticals. Rico took a Top 10 scoring offense and turned it into a suck machine. He had to go.

Jeane Dixon famously predicted (kind of/sort of) JFK's assassination. She also predicted that there would be a cure for cancer by 1967 and peace on earth by 2000. She predicted all sorts of stuff and then loudly broadcasted the stuff she luckily got right. That's what I think is going on here... guesses dressed up as insider information.
-
Granted we haven't had a lot of great OCs but let me ask, what did you like about Rico? Under Rico, the offense went backwards. 2016: #10 in points, #16 yards 2017: #22 in points, #29 in yards Same QB, same RB, mostly the same OL... The WRs were different but not especially better or worse.

Bevell not terribly popular here in Seattle. I guess one fan's trash is another's treasure.
-
Don't agree. Dennison's firing was widely guessed.
-
Accountability. Coaches are hired to make teams better, not worse. Our offense regressed under Dennison. He had to go. This is no surprise to anyone.
-
Easy. Brees. People argue if Brady's made Belichick look good or vice versa. I think it's pretty obvious though that it's a two- way street. They've each contributed to the other's success. Brady might be GOAT but Brees is awfully talented. A Belichick-Brees combo would have been scary good.

PFF End of Season QB Rankings
hondo in seattle replied to NewEraBills's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm not a Tyrod-hater but I do believe this proves PFF looks at - and weighs things - wrongly. -
There's a core of truth here. But what bugs me about Rico is that he made our offense noticeably worse with same QB and comparable talent surrounding that QB. A new OC is supposed to make things better, not worse.
-
I voted 'equal footing.' McD coaches the team; Beane builds the roster. Though I don't think it's a hard boundary. It is interesting to me that Beane analyzes game management decisions. And there's no doubt McD has input on the roster. It's hard to tell from the outside looking in but it seems like these guys are more interested in collaboration than establishing fiefdoms where they rule autocratically.

I'd be okay with Kubiak. Dennison was supposed to make our offense better. Instead he made it worse. If ALynn had been our offensive coordinator this year, we would have still made the playoffs - and then beaten the Jags.
