Player Contracts: They can't have it both ways.

Not sure I follow you, all over this board people are saying that the contracts are not guaranteed and you can get cut anytime ect....so obviously I feel it bears repeating. Since the thread was about Andre Johnson, he has an 8 year 60 million deal of which 15 million is front loaded and guaranteed. So if he broke his leg in year one he would have been paid 15 million of the deal plus his annual remaining salary for that year, for math sake 60-15=45/8=5.62 million + 15 million signing bonus for a total of 20.62 million dollars. For players of his stature where his original contract was renegotiated( 2 years remaining)as well first round draft picks the signing bonuses are very large relative to the overall deal, this type of signing bonus is fairly standard. http://www.tsn.ca/nfl/story/?id=321853 -

Again, the signing bonus is guaranteed. To think that there is nothing in a NFL contract that is guaranteed is just wrong. I know this is the most obvious contract to look at but Haynesworth is also holding out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_Haynesworth 32 million in the first 13 months of a contract and people are trying to tell me that NFL contracts are not guaranteed????? 41 million total guaranteed money. If they cut Haynesworth tomorrow and he signs with another team for say 9 million he will have made something like 41 million dollars in two years. As I said in an earlier post see Jake Delhomme, I believe, and correct me if I am wrong will make 19 million total from the Browns and Panthers this year. 7 million in salary and 12 million remaing bonus from his Panther days As a side note, NHL contracts do have a buy out clause of 2/3 of the remaining value of the contract. -

The life of an NFL contract is not guaranteed but the signing bonus is in effect the guaranteed part of the contract. The other pro sports mentioned that have guaranteed contracts do not have the level of signing bonuses attached that an NFL contract would have. The system is broken for both sides. Shorter term rookie contracts on a slotted system would help, Chris Johnson should not be making 500K and Jamarcus Russel should not have been making the kind of money he did over the last couple of years of his contract. I understand a guy like Chris Johnson holding out because he ( I believe) is still working off of his rookie contract. Andre Johnson signed a new deal with guaranteed money attached and he took it. If he blew out his knee in year one of his contract he would still get the signing bonus of his contract paid. ( as a side note, players that get hurt in OTAs and camp seem to get paid their annual contracts should they be injured as it seems to be a major concern for teams with players that are on the bubble.) Andre Johnson is an awesome receiver and one that I don't think Houston would trade one for one for any other receiver in the league. He signed that deal and now he has to live with it. It is a specious arguement to say that the NFL contracts aren't guaranteed and that a player should hold out when a large element of their contracts that is in fact guaranteed. If you would like another example of how this works both ways see---Jake Delhomme -

14-1 for the vikings looks tempting. I guess it would be more of a favre bet. If he comes back those odds will go down.

I was agreeing with you, I quoted your post as it was referring to Peters. There have been a few posts that were trying to make the case that they should have just signed Peters. I understood the FO postioning in negotiations and he Peters did suck when he did return. Wood for an overated headache who wanted out in Peters was a good deal, IMO Sorry for any confusion I was trying to add a little context.
-
Correct me if I am wrong but Peters was a UDFA, was given a contract. That rookie contract was re-negotiated and extended when Peters played RT, once he moved to LT he wanted LT money. He then sat out of training camps when the bills said come to camp and we will talk, he didn't, eventually turning up in week 2 ( i believe) of the season. In a way I understand the FO moves, they signed him off the heap, trained him to be an OL and then tore up his rookie deal and gave him a raise. re-negotiating a second a contract while technically you were stil on your first is a bit much. Then again, he pouted, got traded and got paid so I guess it worked out for him. When Peters came back from his holdout, he stunk. I had no problem trading him to Philly

Gaither not on practice field this morning....

Those migraines will disappear once he signs his tender and the Bills restructure him with a long term extension for LT money. Its all about the dough. -
Stanley Cup or Super Bowl in Buffalo 1st?
agardin replied to WNY's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
SB- the long term viability of the franchise is in question and winning a SB would go a long way in keeping the team/eventually finding new owners as well as stadium financing. That and I am a Habs fan. I know it doesn't make sense, but when the Habs are out I cheer for the Sabres so take it easy on me. -
A new Leaf is exactly what you would get. The Oakland situation is tough but this guy has shown no interest in getting better even when the writing was on the wall. Someone will bring him in, there is always someone.

There you go, make accomodations and everyone is happy. I see the area by the fences as similar to the balcony you mentioned.

I have a habit of ending threads on these boards so hopefully this reply ends this one. There are designated smoking areas that are outside and away from the concourse area. If you don't want to be near people smoking you can do so easily at the stadium. Why would anybody be for a total ban, you are annoying 15000 fans ( 20% @ 75000) at least. People go to the games and have drinks, the number of people who don't usually smoke do so after having cocktails so I would imagine that 15k number is low. There is a total ban at the Rogers centre and there is no in and out privledges so you can't leave the stadium once you are inside. I took a client to the game that is a social smoker and we inquired about going outside. There were 3 cops and 4 security/ticket people at the gates to stop people from going outside. This is stupidity, let people go enjoy themselves as they see fit in a way that is not annoying other people, it is called being accomodating. If you are annoyed at people smoking by the fences at halftime then you really should take up smoking because I hear it is relaxing. There is zero health risks to people smoking outside and away from people that don't want to be near it. There are always going to be drunks that want to light up in the stands and they are dealt with immediately, I have seen it dozens of times. Other than that, live and let live. Most people don't want to annoy other people and if reasonable accomodations can made to please everyone then why not??? The idea that 'if people aren't going to quit for the right reasons then we will make them quit for the wrong reasons' is wrong and shouldn't be tolerated by anyone. As I said, I think the Ralph is fine the way it is, there is no need to change anything. When they first brought in the smoking sections, compliance was very poor, last year it was much better and it will continue on that trend. People who smoke are very aware that they are being marginalized and are used to being told where they can do it. Actually it is to the point now where they are just happy that at least there is a place for them to go.

Hardy won the Ed Block Award http://www.buffalobills.com/news/article-3...4b-6f6392774d3e It is not an award that I am overly familiar with but dedication is part of qualifications, so I don't think work ethic is a problem. Injuries have been the problem for Hardy, I am hoping the guy is and can stay healthy and contribute. We are going to need a few WRs to step and make some plays this year and the kid deserves a break.

I was wondering where he was drafted but now I know. I heard of him before the draft and they were saying 2nd or 3rd round. It is a very strange and sad story. I think in a league where guys have been conficted of a lot worse and are still playing and a QB in Pitt has been accused twice of sexual misconduct within the last 12 months there could be a place for an apparent one time offender, especially one that was when the guy was 16.
-
It was a couple of years ago but AT was one of the top defenders in the NFL and everyone was raving that the guy could play LB/DL and drop into coverage as a safety and that his athleticism was astouding. A guy who played all over the field couldn't have a low football IQ. Just curious as to where that came from. As an outsider, it seemed him and Belichek were not seeing eye to eye with the final straw being that AT was ten minutes late for a meeting, tardiness that he called in an hour before hand and still had to sit out a game as punishment. We know how these coaches are and I don't think AT liked being used as an example. I saw him speak to reporters after the incident and you can tell that would be it for his time in NE. I know that his play didn't pan out for NE ( great ) given his contract . I have to say I have no idea as to what he has left in the tank. As I mentioned I am curious as to where this low football IQ came from given the above points.

This team can go 8-8 this year...if not better.
agardin replied to DarthICE's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This team will be much better but I don't know if it will result in more wins as our division has appreciated in term of talent/experience; the schedule, on paper, looks harder as well. If drafting Spiller can improve our abysmal 3rd down conversion rate ( dead last in the league ) then we will be in way more games. This should help out the D as they won't be on the field for the entire game. Upgrades on the D line should result in better field postion as well. Last year was one of the worst for injuries in league history, that can't happen again. We are going in the right direction. Likely 6-10 maybe 7-9. Hey that isn't too bad, I think last years 6-10 was one of the worst 6-10 teams I have ever seen. -
Walter Football: Bradford vs. Clausen Comparison
agardin replied to Thurman#1's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The guy is very pro Clausen but I agree with him in this case. Bradford transition from spread to a pro offence is unknown so he has more upside? He has been hurt the last two times he has been hit, the type of hits that a pro QB would take 10 times a game, the point the article makes about a spread offense and a stacked line at OU is true. What happens when Bradford gets killed in St. Louis as Stafford did last year in Detroit does anyone really see him making it through the season? His arm strength is average, does this sound like a consensus #1 pick. He sounds like a great young kid and apparently is very accurate which is huge plus, I guess time will tell. -
Anyone checking the police blotters in Oakland?

some more names per Banks of SI http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writ...list/index.html Check out #7 Konz, as I have posted before, when I read his stats I had to look him because I thought it was a type O

Agreed, I can't claim to know that much about Spiller other than what everyone seems to be saying which is that he is extremely talented with homerun ability. Can he stay in the game and pass protect? From what I have read the answer, at least right now, is no. Therefore he is a situational back and we have way too many holes to fill before we go with a situational rusher at 9, too bad because he does sound like an exciting player
