This is not an apology for the scads of penalties, but a closer look at them. BY O, BY D, BY ST: ___7 were on the offense, 3 of which were made by starters. Big Loser: Bennie. ___9 were on the defense, 2 of which were made by starters. Big Loser: Aaron. ___2 were ST, Burns should know better, Ritz better learn. BY PENALTY: ___Delay of Game=5 yards. Not bad for Losman's first real action. ___12 on the Field=10 yards. This won't happen with defined platoons of guys. ___Holding=20 yards, both by overmatched backups. ___Pass Interference=21 yards. Stamer's was too close to call. Towns was covering well, too. ___Offsides=25 yards. 1 won't be in the NFL, one will be PS, ___Roughing and Personal Fouls=45 yards. Jury is out on Bennie's emotional control. Haggan and Schobel on defense in the 2nd half. Some are early-season penalties and are usually corrected. Losman's delay call, Peters' Illegal Formation(actually the receiver outside Peters lined up too far back), some of the offisdes on the kickoffs (King, Ritzmann), S.Adams, Osunde's and Gause's Defensive Offsides, and J.Burns' offsides on the kickoff are examples. Timing seemed to be a second major culprit. Losman's delay call, Preston's false start (he played practically 3 quarters, and did well), B.Anderson's false start, etc.--they are hearing Losman's cadence for only the second game, and this will get better. The real animal in blitz practice today (the D was practicing rushing Mouse McNally--very fun target--and the O was practicing blitz-blocking) was Stamer, who obliterated his blocker (I'm pretty sure it was Shaud Williams) and Hunter also caught my eye. VERY possible these guys get in there vs. the Colts. If you don't see it, they may save it for the Texans.

The standouts are the ones you know about. Moulds made a superb catch today that makes you think he's all that. On defense, McGee broke up 2 would-be catches, so I'll give the other game ball to him. I saw four less-well-known players who helped further their cause on the field today: 1. Fast Freddie Smith made some super catches. 2. George Wilson made a beautiful catch which would have gone the distance. He's showing us George Wilson's not just Dennis the Menace's neighbor. 3. Daimon Shelton is kicking serious butt out there as our FB. Goldsberry isn't showing anything, and looked poor in the pass-blocking department, so there's a deep dropoff at FB after Shelton (don't say Burns). 4. I really thought Wendell Hunter LB made a strong case for himself this past week. He has stiff competition but could land on the PS.

So THAT'S Marino wool!

Dear Football Central, the word "there" is used to mean the opposite of "here". Note how similar the spellings are: here--->there. the word "their" is a possessive pronoun, and is almost always followed by the possessed item: "Old McDonald sold THEIR farm, EI,-EI,-R."

I don't think we should keep Matthews just to have an experienced mentor for Losman. After all, Losman's experienced QB mentor is clearly Wyche, and Kelly Holcomb is still there. Woodbury has also looked strong in practice. Let's give him a shot at #3...He's young, smart, quick, and is mobile.
