  1. In mid season Weeks 11-15, folks in Baltimore had enough of Flacco. The offense was mediocre at best. They had lost 4 of 5 games to end the season. There was active debate as to whether they should resign him due to his poor play. Then something amazing occured. On Dec 10th Harbaugh fired Cameron and put Jim Calwell in charge of the offense. The same Jim Caldwell who was the QB coach for Peyton Manning starting in 2002 when Tony Dungy was hired. Tony always said Cladwell's coaching and paying attention to detail helped Manning's career to soar. Since Caldwell has taken over the Baltimore offense has improved. Although they lost 2 games, one was the season ender with the starters sitting. With new coaching Flacco looks great. Caldwell has designed the offense to help Flacco be decisive and more accurate with his passing.

So if you do sign Flacco. Which one do you get? The average QB under Cameron or the above average QB under Caldwell? Difficult choice for a GM and Ozzy Newsome will make the right decision.

  2. He is a no go. Has given up his love for codeine? He tested hot for it in 2007 and his career basically ended with his arrest in 2010 for possession of codeine syrup without a prescription. Side effects are numerous but several (impaired judegement and mental function) were obvious to the Raiders staff. I want to see him get well first but mentally and physically. Get his life together. Addiction is a real B-tch. We all know someone who has struggled with it.

If he is clean and serious then he has to get into shape. 300 plus pounds won't cut it. Drop 50, prove that you are able to throw and that you are now clear headed. America loves those who triumph over adversity and will give a guy a second chance. JaMarcus...this is all on you. Give it your best shot and maybe you can stick as a back up in the NFL.

  3. The game was interesting. EJ Wilson was impressive. Overall, it can make a guy fly up draft boards or come down. I still see no elite or franchise QB this year. Bill Polian is correct in his assessment. There are several QBs that can be good and hlep teams There is a difference between a good, middle of the pack QB and the elite, franchise hero. This Super Bowl has the former in starting QBs. So the Bills can draft a good QB, no reaching please, and make the playoffs. If you ever have a chance to land a franchise QB do it! Glennon has the size and arm to do well IMO.

  4. Actually it was Tom Cousineau, picked no. 1 overall in 1979 who, after blowing us off, was eventually traded to Cleveland and with that pick, we got Jim Kelly.

Walt ended up being Joe Devlin after we traded him to St. Louis in 1976 for their second round pick in 1977. Of course, Joe proved to be a wonderful member of the organization for years.

But if you want to get really goofy, you could make an argument that Walt led to Bruce.

Walt, who wasn't a bad player for the Bills during his four years, getting a handful of sacks each year he was here, certainly better production than Maybin and Flowers combined, went to St. Louis and the Bills, in an apparent attempt to restock the d-line, traded their no. 1 in 1977 to the Bengals to get Sherman White, who, ironically, was drafted by the Bengals no. 2 overall behind Walt in the 1972 draft. Although not a dominating force, Sherman had a productive career with the Bills through the 1983 season.

Now, like most years it seems, the Bills were crap in 1976 and the pick they sent to the Bengals for Sherman ended up being the third overall, which the Bengals used to get Eddie Edwards. Edwards went on to have a stellar career with the Bengals, ending up their all time sack leader. His best years were, arguably, 1983 and 1984. So, had the Bills kept that pick and drafted Edwards, they would have had a dominate pass rusher still in his prime when it came time for the 1985 draft as opposed to a d-line in which White had retired after the 1983 season and the sack leaders for the 1984 Bills squad came from the LB corps.

So, assuming with Edwards we still had the overall pick in 1985, and he was as productive in Buffalo as he had been in Cincy, would we have drafted Bruce no. 1 overall in 1985?

In any event, say what you want about the fact that a number-one overall didn't produce like we would have hoped, Walt contributed a lot more to the team than Maybin or Flowers and, arguably, Mike Williams. And unlike those three, at least the trade of Walt ended up getting us Joe Devlin, where the picks for Maybin, Flowers and Williams were entirely wasted.

And finally, in case you were wondering, the very first player autograph I ever got was ... Walt Patulski.

I did this once while reading the NHL reocrd book...tracing an impact of a trade. This is a stats/records geeks idea of a great Saturday night. It is a guilty pleasure. Great post and a nice read. thanks for the contribution.
  5. There are fans who could have done a better job than what we have seen from the Bills front office people, and I am being totally serious. In 2006, it might not be possible to do worse than Levy/Jauron. They entered this draft with the #8, and an extra early 3rd round pick. They came away with Donte Whittner, Josh McCargo, and Ashton Youboty, and this draft was stocked with talent. This is only one example.

So yes, the Bills usually draft at the level of a teenage kid who watches a little youtube and has a few draft magazines. Sometimes worse.

I concede to your point in that draft. It was baffling to say the least. Jaurons love of DBs hamstrung the Bills. Hope the new crew does better.
  6. When the Super Bowl was in Indy the NFL and their marketing people made sure to thwart any use on non approved NFL product. They are ruthless and it does not matter if it is only $200 ...it is the principle to them. Operation fake sweep (no lie) lead the to confiscate 42000 illiegal Super Bowl items. read the story here: http://normantranscript.com/superbowl/x2053732537/NFL-works-to-protect-copyright-as-Brady-admits-illegal-viewing

  7. 6 good QB prospects on the Senior Bowl rosters. Strong arms does not equal success. Ability read the defense, select the correct receiver and throw the ball in a less that 4 seconds is a more accurate measure. I will watch and see how these young men perform tomorrow. It should be a good platform for them to show off their talents. The next starting Bills QB maybe one of these 6 men. The 3 on the North squad (Dysert, Glennon and Nassib) are solid choices. There will be some interesting Defensive linemen and LBs playing (Kevin Reddick ILB and Ezekiel Ansah DE). Watching the game is not a bad way to spend the cold afternoon.

  8. Buddy built an OL for this team after 15 or so years of futility. He is to be hailed for this imo.

The thing is, he didn't only miss with Wilson. In 2011, he wasted the second pick in round 2 on a corner who completely, flat out sucks. Then, he took a light in the ass, sub-par linebacker with the 4th pick of round 3. This with Ryan Mallett sitting there. He passed on Kaepernick and Mallett for players who suck, and there is no possible excuse for this.

And I don't care what he might have been told by Gailey, scouts, or anyone else. He blew numerous opportunities to make the Buffalo Bills Football Team one that is playoff caliber.

There are no excuses for missing on this many opportunities.

Good points. I agree that Aaron WIlliams is not a good CB but he was projected on most draft sites as a Safety in the NFL. Sheppard was a 4th or 5th rounder who was seen as a spot starter/back up and a special teamer. Mallett has done nothing in the pros to say passing on him was an error. NIx is not alone in these misjudgements, the whole scouting staff is to be held accountable. Dalton and Kaepernick were there in the 2nd and one should have been chosen. They need to scrap the evaluation system they use, bring in a outside set of eyes (like Bill Polian) and improve on the nuts and bolts while they can. I almost think an average fan can do just as good a job for the Bills by studying draft sites, senior bowl games and watching the combine. (tongue in cheek)
  9. Strong draft class if you need Defensive or Offensive linemen followed by DB and WR. I agree the draft class for QB does not have elite talent but there is quality. Prior to the current CBA most teams would shy away from reaching on a QB due to (among other reasons) money. Now the hit will not be as great to make a reach. IMO a draft without elite skill positions on the top of the board will lend itself to more trades in the premium rounds. As noted before up to 50 percent of selections have been traded but the bulk of that is in the 4th and later rounds.

This will be a very fluid draft and a fun one to watch. Glennon is flying up the boards with his Senior Bowl practice this week and tomorrows game will have an impact on the draft. Weighing what to do at the 8th position will be predicated on what the first 7 teams do starting with KC. Jacksonville and Arizona need QB and the Jets at 9th can trade up past the Bills to nab a coveted QB. If the top 3 QBs are taken...I see the Bills selecting a LB or OL. Trading back will be the the wisest option in this scenario. I look forward to April all the pre draft debate.

  10. Plenty on NFL types on hand...coaches, scouts, personnel guys etc. Good time for Brandon to get to know the talent and connect with ohter teams. Just like any other business you have to go where the people are. This how the ground work for trades is laid. Typical glad handing and that kind of stuff abounds. Nothing wrong with what he is doing. No smoke or fire.

  11. Sabotage is a very strong accusation on Tim Brown's part. The point of changing the game plan a Friday made no sense. Raiders could have installed a new game plan after the AFC Championship game. The only way to find the answer is to interview the staff and a majority of the players who were involved. Callahan has left Nebraska and the Raiders with those left behind bitter at him. This might color Mr. Browns view of the situation. Intriguing story nonetheless.

Jerry Rice is on ESPN NFL Live and backing up what Tim Brown said. As Arte Johnson said on Laugh In.....verrrrrrrrry interesting.

  12. To make a the AFC championship game is a significant accomplishment, being all those Super Bowls is even greater. They did it with 2 constants...Brady and Belichick. I don't like either one but begrudingly respect the amount of victories they have attained. I thinkthey will go down aa being very good but no where near a dynasty. Losses in big games, cheating, poor sportsmanship in victory and defeat have all tarnished the legacy.

  13. The draft is a guessing game. The talent can be seen in the combine, prodays, and film study. The human factor is what counts the most. Hard to peer into a man's soul and see his heart, determination, work ethic, values etc. and add to it money, family and friends. They all go into the mix. This where a good GM is separated from a great one. I look forward to see how the new group in Buffalo do in this years draft.

  14. Here is an excerpt from the Ray Lewis part of the murder trial. He was involved in thebrawl when 2 men died. His 2 friends, whom he testified against, were found not convicted. Thus he, in legal terms, was a part of a murder.

    http://www.artclu.com/crew/bfoley/lawscope/index.cfm?L1=news&story=10&pg=1

Lewis testified that he entered a guilty plea to a charge of obstructing justice. He admitted he lied to police and made a false statement in the hours after the fatal fight. Defense lawyers for his former co-defendants got the judge to instruct the jury that they could infer nothing against them from Lewis' guilty plea.

Lewis described a brawl with punches being thrown everywhere. He said he didn't want to get invoved because it would jeopardize his NFL career. "I tried to stop this fight", he said.

Lewis said at a hotel afterwards he asked Sweeting what happened. Lewis demonstrated how Sweeting allegedly held a knife with its blade protruding from his fist and said, "Everytime they hit me, I hit them".

Lewis testified that he noticed Oakley was injured, his "head was busted". According to Lewis when he asked Oakley what happened, Oakley said,"Nothing. I was just beating him." Lewis replied, "You was all trippin'".

  15. I would not say KC is in a bad spot. They will have to take the best player available because no QB in the draft is worth the number 1 overall. Finding a team to trade with to move down may prove to be difficult. They should select Star Lotulelei DT Utah and match him up with Dontari Poe and fortify the defensive core of the defense. They have a good running game and the pieces to make a very solid defense.
