The colts fumble that was not called
billsfan1959 replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
They also missed a facemask on Roberts when he brought the ball out of the endzone up the right sideline to about the 12 yard line in the second quarter. They called the Bills for holding and they started at their own 6 yard line - instead of offsetting penalties. The Bills then went 3 and out. -
You might want to go back and look at the play again, bud. Allen reacted as he has in every other similar situation in which, when it turned out well, I am sure you praised him. He evaded the first defender that was barely touched by Feliciano and was immediately wrapped up by a second defender. He wasn't playing "hero ball," he wasn't situationally unaware, and he wasn't being careless.

If you think the Colts are just an "average playoff team" you really should look a little deeper into their play this season. They are a very good football team that played, arguably their best game of the year - and still lost. Te Bills certainly were not perfect and there are things they need to continue to improve on. They did what they needed to do and won the game. This is playoff football.

IMO, Allen did nothing wrong on that play. Lewis went right by Feliciano and Allen did what he always does: evaded the tackle. We have watched him do it all season and make big plays - that is one of the things that makes him so special. Unfortunately, Autry was right there to wrap Allen up. Allen tried to secure the ball and Autry did a good job of forcing the fumble. That was more of good defensive play than it was any kind of mental error or carelessness on the part of Allen.

The Colts have a very good, physical defense and they played, arguably, their best defensive game (and overall game) of the season. They had consistent QB pressured the entire game and Allen rarely threw from a clean pocket. He was evading a rush and extending plays almost every time he dropped back. IMO, the Bills do not win that game without Allen playing at an elite level. Outside of Rogers and Mahomes, I don't think any other QB could have done what Allen did in that game. Again, IMO.

If McDermott doesn't call that time out. They are attempting a FG at the end of that game instead of a Hail Mary. As for the Bills defensively, they covered really well and Rivers had to make quick decisions because of the time. Indy bunched their receivers on the left side on both of the plays where Rivers threw the ball away. There just wasn't anyone open.

The colts fumble that was not called

Just to set aside any idea that he was touched while he was down... -
If you go back and watch the game again, you will feel even better. The Colts are a very good team and a really tough matchup for the Bills. For the entire first half, the Bills started a drive no better than their 15 yard line (with an avg start at the 8yd line), while the Colts' worst start was their 25 (with an avg start of their own 38 on their other drives). For the game, they didn't turn the ball over, they held the ball for over 34 minutes, consistently got pressure on Allen all day, shut down the Bills' running game, and they got the benefit of several calls, including a clear fumble near the end of the game. They played the best game of their season - and still lost. Allen was phenominal. The defense played well outside of two drives in the fourth quarter and came up big at several points in the game, especially when they needed to the most. Considering how long they were on the field, their defensive stop at the end of the game was even more impressive. It is tough to win in the playoffs. I trust them to be better in their next game. This is a good team.

Josh - Whatever is ‘past elite’

The Bills do not win this game today without Allen playing at an elite level. I just finished watching the game again. He was everything you want in a franchise QB. We are fortunate to have him. -
They've had no problem at all letting Allen air it out from his own goal line and even did it in the game today. Field position is no excuse when you have a QB playing at the level Allen is playing at. And it wasn't even just when the Bills had bad field position - Daboll called the worst run plays at the most innopprtune times and literally ended at least three drives because of it.

Honestly, I don't think he has much to learn from the play. The defensive lineman went right by Feliciano and Allen does what Allen always does: he tried to evade the tackle. He did get away only to have another defender wrap him up. He got spun around and tried to secure the ball, and the defensive lineman knocked it loose as they were going down. We've watched Allen get out of that same situation and make a play over and over. It is part of what makes him so special. The fumble was actually a more of a good play by the defender than carelessness by Allen. -

Right. Allen doesn't carry things like that with him in a negative way. He was awesome today. The Bills aren't even in this game without Allen. 74%, 9.3 Y/A, 324 yds, 54 yds rushing, 378 total yds and 3 TDs. He would have thrown for more if Daboll didn't suddenly become fascinated with the run game at the most inopportune times... -

He'll be fine. -
Amen. There was plenty of blame to go around in that game, from John Brown not getting his feet down at the 2 yard line on a pass from Allen, to Dion Dawkins completely wiffing on a block on a linebacker leading to a hit on Allen and a fumble, to Dawson Knox and Cody Ford running right by a single defender in OT that would have allowed Allen to run at least to the Houston 25 yard line, and many more in between. Williams was far from alone in failing to make a play he should have.

He chose a QB on a run first team, that has the fewest passing attempts and yards of any starter, who attempts 50% of his passes off RPOs and play action, and runs an offense where most positive plays do not come from him in the pocket - to insert into a pass first offense that relies primarily on the QB's abilities from the pocket... Sounds logical to me...
