Bills 2021 Draft - Overall Assessment
billsfan1959 replied to Hapless Bills Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The timing of when he joined this board and the content of his initial posts suggested he joined this board with the specific intent to troll this team about Allen. JMO, but I always suspected he was a Bills fan prior to the Mahomes pick and jumped on the Mahomes bandwagon. -
I would be very, very happy with Etienne and Freiermuth...

I do not disagree with you in regard to the fact that Allen struggled with a low completion percentage at Wyoming and, as a result, the overwhelming assessment with him was that he had accuracy issues. That was the primary narrative about Allen coming out of college: He was not an accurate passer. And I do not disagree that his struggles with completion percentage his rookie year mirrored his college struggles. My argument is that it is a superficial assesment to look at a low completion percentage and automatically attribute it to accuracy issues, when there are so many variables involved. In my opinion, I believe Allen's low completion percentage was due far more to other variables than to his ability to throw the ball accurately. Again, it is just my opinion.

Like the criticism from plenty of "experts" that he wasn't an accurate passer and never would be? Right, nothing superficial about that evaluation. Please. I did argue otherwise with many posters on this board during his entire rookie season and into his 2nd season. As it turns out, my arguments were credible. Feel free to believe what you want to believe.

Many of those "predraft concerns," particularly the "accuracy concern," were based on superficial analyses with no indepth look at underlying variables unique to Allen or his circumstances at Wyoming. In his rookie year in the NFL, he was less experienced than almost any QB ever drafted in the top 10, had absolutely nobody at the QB position (coach or player), at least initially, with real mentoring abilities at the NFL level, and was surrounded by almost historically bad offensive talent. If his rookie year mirrored anything, it was the continuation of evaluating his play at a superficial level. He has gotten a lot better over the last two years, not coincidentally, as his experience and the level of talent around him have increased. However, it really shouldn't have come as a big surprise to anyone who cared to take the time to really look at his play in an objective and honest way. I doubt anyone in the Bills organization responsible for drafting him is surprised.

Right, because they are exactly the same player and every variable will be the same....

Mahomes is a great QB, maybe, currently, the best in the NFL. However, If what Allen did against Houston last year was widely considered a "meltdown," then this should be the intro clip for all analyses regarding Mahomes' performance last night...

Based on the above, I'm guessing the end of the connections has something to do with Kevin Bacon?

How Allen will Work to become a better QB
billsfan1959 replied to Hapless Bills Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Of QBs with over 250 pass attempts (34 QBs), Allen had the 9th lowest sack % (4.3), was 5th lowest in averge yards lost per sack (6.1), was 16th in total sacks (26), and was 20th in total yards lost (159). Pretty sure sacks and handoffs were not a real problem for Allen. As far as the fumbles go, it is less about carelessness with the football than it is about style of play. This year, Allen was one of the best at moving within, and stepping up into, the pocket - and you rarely saw him bail when he didn't need to. He kept his composure, rarely panicked, and always kept his eyes downfield while moving around in the pocket, which is why he had one of the highest ratings in passing from the pocket. One of his many physical gifts is his ability to escape pressure and extend plays with his athleticism. There are going to be times when he is going to take a sack when he could have gotten rid of the ball, or have the ball stripped loose while trying to extend a play. IMO, it is not bad behavior, and rarely is it the result of carelessness or bad decison making. It is inevitable that his style of play will result in a bad play now and then; however, those are far outweighed by all of the good to great plays that result from his athleticism. He is a smart kid who is getting better and better at understanding the game and how his style of play works within it. Since his first year, he has continuously improved in taking care of his body, making better decisions, making fewer mistakes, and knowing when/how to use his athleticism - all while still staying within his style of play. He is only going to get better. -

You must be thinking of the Irish Soccer League Draft: Best player O'vailable -
This is exactly where I am at. I don't anticipate any "blockbuster" FA moves. However, I certainly could see a big move of some sort through the use of players and draft capital in the right situation. Whatever he decides to do, it will be in the best interests of the team in the short and long-term. Beane is about building a team that is consistently competetive year in and year out. I don't see him making any moves that sacrifice the future (in regard to the cap or draft picks) in order to win now. IMO, Bean views whatever moves he makes through the lens of the "superbowl window" opening wider rather than closing.

Again, I don't disagree. I hold both accountable here. Sad situation. -

I get it, believe me. I am well aware that Houston has created most of their own problems. However, Watson isn't completely blameless in this entire fisco. You don't think he was well aware of all of the issues with this franchise before he signed a new contract? And, honestly, his behavior hasn't been much more professional than theirs. I think the value for him is limited because the would reach new levels of ineptness in trading a franchise QB within the division or conference - and that is where the teams are that can offer the most. Nothing could be worse for that team than to have to face him any future playoff scenarios within the conference. So, if they go out of conference, as they should, they are not going to get nearly as much for him. I hate when I see situations like this where, as professionals, they should be able to reach some agreement. -

IMO, Houston shouldn't trade him. Tell him to play...or sit out. -
I agree with your feeling that TE is higher on Bean's priority list than many may think. The identity of this team now revolves around Allen and the passing game. Giving him a TE that other teams actually have to game plan for would only make the offense better and maybe take it to the next level. The problem is that this is going to be a difficult offseason for Beane to add such a player. The free agent pool is pretty thin outside of Henry Hunter (I would be surprised if the Chargers don't find a way to keep him now that they have Hebert) and the draft pool is even thinner. I like what I have seen of Sweeney and I am not as down on Knox as some; however, I really don't see the type of TE we would like on our current roster. Maybe there is a hidden gem sitting on some team's practice squad. I have more faith in the Bills' pro player personnel staff than I do their college scouting staff when it comes to WR and TE positions.

A Bills Family Story I think You All Can Relate to...
billsfan1959 replied to Mickey's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
What a great story! I have done extensive genealogy work with many of my family lines. I love working on my family history and have documented so many interesting things about the lives of many of my ancestors. For years I was at a dead end on the family line of my surname and recently had a breakthrough and made some amazing discoveries through a YDNA project I am involved in. How cool is it that you have a famly history story that involves the Bills? Thanks for sharing -

Does our O-Line Coach need to be replaced?
billsfan1959 replied to Big Turk's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Last year they made the playoffs as a wildcard, lost their first game, and finished 10-7 overall with a fairly weak schedule. This year they won their division with the highest SOS of any playoff team, won their first two playoff games, made it to the AFC Championship game and lost to (until someone proves otherwise) the best team in football, and finished the year 15-4. I am confident that the coaching staff and the front office are more than capable of assessing the team and improving where they need to improve for next season - even if they didn't have the benefit of your wisdom on who should be fired.... -

Why stop there? Tear it all down...couldn't even win a simple AFC title game on the road against the defending superbowl champions.... -
Thank you Buffalo Bills

Losses are always disappointing and it will hurt for awhile, like it always does. But, they had a great season and the future looks very bright. I love this team and I am looking forward to next year already. -
How are you passing the time today?
