Fred Jackson discusses Marrone vs. Hackett
billsfan1959 replied to 5 Wide's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This. The best thing that could have happened to this team is for Marrone to opt out. This offense had Marrone's fingerprints all over it. The fact that his "area of expertise" was the O line and that was the unit he spent most of his "hands on" time with during practices should tell you all you need to know. It was the weakest unit on the team and virtually every player regressed or failed to develop...and it extended to the rest of the offense as well. I have no idea how good Hackett may or may not be; however, at this point, I want a complete overhaul of the offensive coaching staff. My assessment of EJ Manuel and every other offensive player is on hold until I see what they do under a coaching staff that actually knows what they are doing.... -
Top ten coaching candidates for the Bills

Not sure what asking how many SBs Elway won without Shanhan is supposed to show - as it goes the other way as well: Shanahan didn't win any SBs without Elway. Elway led his team to three Super Bowls before Shanahan. While the Broncos lost all three, he still led them there. Shanahan never led a team to the Super Bowl other than when Elway was his QB. Shanahan's post season record with Elway as his QB was 7-1. His post season record without Elway as his QB was 1-5. While I don't want him now, he was most definitely a good coach. However to diminish or dismiss the importance of Elway in Shanahan's post season success is silly -
A serious question, why the faith in Whaley?
billsfan1959 replied to Kellyto83TD's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Interesting that pretty much all the players Whaley has been involved in acquiring on the defensive side of the ball have been good and improving - while pretty much everyone on the offensive side of the ball have either been no good from the beginning or regressed over time. Do you think Whaley can be that good on one side of the ball and that bad on the other? Or might it have something to do with the quality of the coaching staff on the defensive side as opposed to that on the offensive side? I can't help but think of the overall jump in the play of defensive players under Pettine - compared to the results the previous coaching staff achieved with most of the same players... -

[Please Change Title]mike williams part 2
billsfan1959 replied to uticaclub's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Not just Williams. There were a number of offensive players who had a history of decent production at their respective positions before Marrone and regressed. How many offensive players can you name that actually improved under Marrone? I find it very difficult to believe that Williams was not good enough to see the field...particularly in the red zone -

You do not believe that there is this perception out there that Doug Marrone is responsible for the modest success of this team, yet, you believe the Jets will hire him because there is this perception out there that Doug Marrone is responsible for the modest success of this team? -

Have mannc and Jerry Sullivan ever been seen in the same room? I only ask because I think they are the same person... -
Are the Pegulas in Over Their Heads?

1. They appear to be primarily reacting to events because they have been faced with events that they had to react to. 2. Because they haven't personally informed the fans and the media of a well thought out plan does not mean they do not have one. 3. You want some evidence that they know how to run a football franchise? The season just ended and the head coach quit three or four days ago. Here is a novel idea: Why don't we at least wait to see what they ACTUALLY DO and see the RESULTS OF THOSE ACTIONS.. Then you will have your evidence one way or the other. 4. They are the new owners and probably will be for a very long time. Nobody has any idea at this point whether they will be good owners or not...whether they have a solid plan or not...etc. Time is the only thing that will give us answers. Why do we have to begin with the assumption that they are in over their heads? -
I might be wrong; however, I believe he is referring to the troling by Dr Trooth...

No, pretty sure it was an actual double murder...

Maybe Sullivan should get out more and "actually try to discover some of the culture that Buffalo has to offer." He seems to spiral into a deeply depressive, spiteful, petty emotional state when cooped up in his little office... -
Certainly do not want him now; however, IMHO, Parcells in his prime might have been one of the top five all-time NFL coaches.

Who do you want to be named next Bills HC?

1. Hue Jackson if Schwartz stays as DC. 2. Schwartz if it is the only way to keep him -

To me, that is the most telling aspect of Marrone's abilities... So glad he is gone. -
Minority coaching interview
billsfan1959 replied to billsfan_34's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I am actually pretty high on Hue Jackson. He has really worked his way up through the ranks and has put together a pretty impressive resume. He was a running backs coach under Schottenheimer, the receivers coach in Cincinatti with Ochocinco and Houshmandzadeh, and a Qb coach in Baltimore for Flacco's first two years. In 2010 he took the Raiders to 8-8, finishing 2nd in rushing, 6th in scoring, and 10th in total offense - with average talent and splitting QB duties between Jason Campbell and Bruce Gradkowski. Last year the Bengals were 10th in total offense and 6th in scoring, and this year they were 6th in rushing, 15th in total offense, and 15th in scoring - all with Andy Dalton at QB who, IMO, is average at best. I like th efact he has been successful without a franchise QB...unlike Gase and McDaniels.... -
My final thoughts on Saint Dougie
billsfan1959 replied to BmarvB's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This idea that year three is an important year for a coaching staff is often true. However, in those instances where you see a marked improvement, there is generally an upward trajectory during the first and second years - not always reflected in the record, but certainly reflected in play. We saw it on the defensive side of the ball, which was the product of Pettine and Schwartz. The only credit I will give to Marrone is hiring those guys - which is what a HC should do. On the offensive side of the ball, the trajectory was a steep descent. I cannot think of a single offensive player that improved under Marrone and Hackett. As a matter of fact, there was a marked regression almost across the board with players - and the worst area of all was the offensive line where Marrone spent most of his "hands on" time during practice. Now the Buffalo Bills offense is back to square one? Are you kidding me? Square one would be a step up from the disaster left by Marrone and Hackett. The Bills may have finished 9-7; however, if you ask most fans, my guess is that most of us would say it felt very hollow and didn't generate the enthusiasm for next season that the first winning record in ten years should have. IMO, the best thing in the world that could have happened to this team, at this juncture, was for Marrone to leave and Polian to stay at ESPN...the future looks brighter to me. -
TBD Thoughts on Coaches Yes! Eh. Or Heck NO!
billsfan1959 replied to Lord_MacDonald's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I am not sure it is "hate" for McDaniels as much as it is a recognition that he was a monumental failure in two separate positions: HC with Denver and OC with the Rams. He was fired from the only two positions he has had outside of New England and has only had success with Brady...and the NE offense didn't skip a beat while McDaniels was gone... -
Head Coach Candidate: Josh McDaniels
billsfan1959 replied to The Frankish Reich's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
His stint the next year as offensive coordinator with the Rams was a disaster as well. His only success has been with Tom Brady as his QB. No thanks. -

Marrone was upset at the Buffalo Media
billsfan1959 replied to Jerry Jabber's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
IMHO, I don't believe the media had any role in his departure. I believe he wanted security, in the form of contract extensions for himself and his staff - and, ultimately, more power and control. I think it was denied and he left. The manner of his departure says a few things to me: 1) I do think it was a smart move on his part. He is marketable right now. If he stayed and the team showed little to no improvement next year, then he probably would be fired and his chances of another HC job would be slim. RIght now, he may be able to parlay taking a perennial 6-10 team with a losing culture to a 9-7 record and playoff contention into the security, power, and control he craves. . 2) While it was a good move for him, it calls into question the sincerity of all his preaching about accountability, his commitment to the team, and his commitment to the fans. He had a team that finished 9-7 with another year on his contract, and two years of rhetoric about his dedication and commitment about where he wanted them to be. Then he walked out without finishing the job. 3) Given the nature of the responses from some of the players, it is clear he never informed them of his decision. He just left. They bought into his philosophies, played their hearts out for him, ad he didn't have the decency to at least let them know. I know it is a business and there would be no loyalty from management if they felt he should be fired. However, that is the business that Marrone chose to be in. He preached commitment, accountability, and respect - and in the end, he showed none of those things. I wish him well but I am glad he is gone. -
Not sure you can put that all on EJ as the offense was equally inept with Orton at QB...
