[Vague Title] Just watched NFL Today on ESPN

No disrespect to the OP; however, I really don't care what anyone outside of Buffalo (other than fans) thinks of the Bills. I just want to see the kind of improvement this year that says we are finally turning that corner into becoming a legitimate, annual contender for the Division and for a playoff berth. If that happens, there will be plenty of national recognition for those that want to see it. -
Shaq Lawson Option decision week. What do you do?

I kind of feel like Shaq could be a real beneficiary of Oliver's play... -

I'm thinking if someone would have tested Samson after he brought down those stone pillars there might be an 11th commandment... Just sayin' -
Allen threw 20 passes in the Miami game where the intended receiver was less than 10 yds form the LOS, completing 15 of 20 (75%). IMO, of those 20 passes, 14 (70% were accurate) 1 was a miscommunication and uncatchable, 2 were inaccurate and uncatchable, and 3 were inaccurate but catchable - so, 80% of his short throws were catchable. 5 of those were slants (completing 4 of 5). Of the five slants, he led the receiver on two (completions), was slightly behind on one (completion), and clearly behind on the other two one completion). I would say 2 of the five were not accurate throws. Honestly, if you broke down the games of every other QB, you would find inaccuracies with the vast majority of them similar with what we saw with Allen in the Miami game. Allen showed tremendous improvement in his short throws (screens, flares, slants, underneath patterns, etc) over the course of last year. It was never a feature of his game at Wyoming and he clearly needs to continue to work on it. However, I don't see his accuracy on slants or other short throws as a real problem, and I believe it will continue to improve with experience. IMO, Allen's "accuracy issues" are more a product of decision making. It is not a problem of completing the short throws as much as it is learning when to settle for the short throws. Allen looks for that big throw first and loves to live in that 15-25 yard range. When he learns when it is more advantageous to not throw downfield and settle for a shorter throw, his completion percentage will rise. I hope he improves in that area; however, I love that he looks for that big throw first.

I think, by the time preseason ends, Knox is going to surprise a lot of people. I was a Hock fan as well and I think there are a lot of similarities between him and Knox. Different programs, different philosophies, different talents around them. Had Knox been on a team like Iowa, I am not so sure he wouldn't have put up some similar numbers. Let's hope! -

What does our defensive line base look like?
billsfan1959 replied to Virgil's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Absolutely spot on. Had Oliver not sustained the knee injury and had he not been misused, he would have been a top 2 or 3 pick. He will make Star, Jerry and even Shaq better as well (not to mention the LBs behind him). A special player. -
My apologies in my last response, I misread your post and thought you were asking about my thoughts on next year's crop of WRs. As for the WRs on the team, I think, by making the offensive line a strength, and I do believe it will be, Allen will have more time, he will be able to utilize play action more effectively, and the defenses will have to be more cognizant of defending the entire field and both run and pass. That alone helps the receivers we have to be better than they would be in the s@*t show that was our offense last year. Also, given Foster's play over the last half of last season (which put him in the upper level of receivers in the league) paired with the speed of Brown on the other side, will open up things for Allen (not to mention the running game) - and, hopefully, he learns to take more of those underneath patterns to running backs, Beasley, Croft, Knox, and/or Jones. Also, I am optimistic about Duke Williams. Coming out of Auburn, he had as much talent as most WRs in this year's draft. It was his off the field issues that led him to being an UDFA and then to the CFL. He is a real talent. All in all, I am optimistic that they will be much better than last year. It doesn't mean I don't want that true #1 guy; however, I don't think it will be detrimental to their success if they have to wait another year for it.

I can only go by analyses I have read regarding the strengths of the 2020 WR group. I have seen anywhere from 7-10 WRs listed in the top 50 overall prospects. DK has the most upside of any WR in this draft - but he is anything but a sure bet. If he reaches his potential, he will be a stud. However, I would put the following potential 2020 receivers at or above all but 1 or 2 of the receivers in this draft: Jerry Jeudy, Alabama Laviska Shenault Jr., Colorado Tarik Black, Michigan Collin Johnson, Texas Tee Higgins, Clemson Jalen Reagor, TCU Ceedee Lamb, Oklahoma Donovan Peoples-Jones, Michigan

I understand your position and I think most of us would have loved to have added a true #1 receiver to the team. I personally would have loved DK or Harry. However: (1) I think the comparisons to Cleveland are a little unfair as I believe they are probably a year or so ahead of the Bills in building their team and had better overall talent on their team when they selected Mayfield, as opposed to Allen. (2) I am not sure Beane is done, as he has given every indication he would love to find upgrades at WR - in particular an upper echelon talent. Yet, even if it doesn't happen this year, they have done a considerable amount of work to improve the passing game. I've said it over and over: building a strong offensive line and strong running game is the quickest path to improvement for Allen. It allows him to utilize his strengths (play action, time in the pocket to go downfield, etc) while working on improving areas he needs to improve on. It also makes the receivers they have even better. All indications are that next year's draft is probably going to be much deeper at receiver than this year. I think that is when you will see the big additions at the receiver position. In the meantime, there is absolutely no reason to think they will not be much better this year as they are.

Haha! Spot on then... -
I think Beane has been exploring ways to do just that. It wasn't exactly a bumper crop of FA WRs and I believe Oliver, Ford, and Singletary were all better value picks for this team, at this moment, than a WR would have been. IMO, Beane will continue looking for an upgrade right up into training camp. If he finds it and can obtain it at a reasonable cost, he will pull the trigger. If not, the improvements they have made on the Oline and at RB will help the group of receivers they have be better - and they look to upgrade more next year.
