Ditto @CSBill and @Hue5711- good read, Thurman! We live in an instant gratification society and we want results now. It is difficult for coaches to keep highly drafted QBs on the bench, even for one year as Reid did with Mahomes, without taking a beating from the media and fan base - or interference from owners. Consequently, coaches, in so many instances, are forced to create "limited" game plans for thier young QBs that minimize mistakes rather than maximise results. There is no tolerance for the necessary: The mistakes a young QB will make while learning to operate in an ever increasingly complex systems (offensively and defensively). There is that rare talent that can exceed right away (such as Mahomes - although there is no way of knowing how he would have fared starting immediatelty); however, most QBs that are successful in this league for awhile, need to get through that initial couple of years striking a balance between not making so many mistakes they get benched and showing just enough promise to keep their organization's faith in them. I think this method of limiting game plans can be helpful and harmful. Sometimes it can help that good QB get through the growing pains in a way he stays on the field. Sometimes, it masks the real limitiations of a QB and ends up costing an organization the very thing they didn't want to happen - spending 4 years on a QB only to find out he isn't very good. I still think those QBs that are exceptional talents will find a way to succeed. The QBs at the levels below them that are most affected in good and bad ways.

I think the spirit world is probably more upset than Gase right now at being associated in any way with that s*** show... -

This is a team on the rise and one that I believe will be good for awhile. They are not there yet, although I do think they are definitely capable of getting into the playoffs and competing. If most people on this board are honest with themselves, they probably believed this year would be about taking that next step from last year - meaning the defense would be as good or better, a big improvement on the offensive side of the ball, and competing for a wildcard berth. I think those things are being achieved and I am happy with the direction things are headed. They still need some pieces on both sides of the ball and more experience (especially QB) to take them to that next level of being considered legitimate contenders to go deep into the playoffs. However, I see them taking that next step next year and being at that level for awhile.

I have never been a fan of the whole "what if" concept. (1) As you say, if one play changes, then the complexion of the game changes, at least for that moment, and maybe more. (2) Where doe s it end? You could literally find plays throughout every game that could affect the outcome. One could say the Bills were lucky that the Jets kicker missed an extra point and a field goal. One could also say the Jets were very fortunate to even be in that game in the first half when Buffalo was moving the ball up and down the field, only to keep turning it over.

I would suspect not ?. Nice to know there are a number of Bills fans on this board who have followed this team through many ups and downs (albeit more downs than ups). It offers a greater perspective. First game I attended was in 1968 - and I can still remember almost everything about it... Love this team! Go Bills! -

Actually, by that logic, the 49ers should have dropped 4-5 spots as they barely got by the Redskins...

Some QB Metrics from the 2018 QB Draft
billsfan1959 replied to RocCityRoller's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't particularly care what round he was picked in or how he ended up in the starting role. The point was that you told a poster he was WRONG in claiming Brady was a game manager to begin his career, and cherry picked a stat line to prove your point. Anyone who actually watched those games knows that was exactly what Brady was at the beginning. BTW: In the 300 yard games you mention of Brady's those 1st three years, he had over 50 attempts in all but one. I would venture to guess that if Allen threw the ball over 50 times in any of the games this year, he would probably have a few 300 yard games under his belt. -

Outside of the 1st two games this season, his success has largely come from running the ball. Overall, he has been successful, though, and you cannot ignore that he is 11-3 as a starter. However, since the 1st two games, his passing game appears to have reverted to what it was last year. I think, for sustainable success, he needs to be better from the pocket. This reminds me a lot of what Roman did with Kaepernick. Sooner or later, teams will develop a blueprint for keeping him relatively in check as a runner. Then we will see. That is what I like with Allen this year: Learning to rely on his skills in the pocket rather than with his legs. He has a long way to go; however, it is the only way he will truly be successful long term -

This is such a disingenuous post. I love that you present his 300 yd game that season and forget to mention he threw the ball 54 times in that game, and averaged 177 yds per game in the other 14 games. That was a team with a very good deffense and, yes, Brady was not much more than a game manager. He did throw for 300 yards against the Raiders in their first playoff game; however, again, he threw the ball over 50 times (with no TDs and 1 INT in a game they barely won 16-13). In the other two playoff games, including the Super Bowl, he averaged around 130 yds per game. His big claim to fame that year was that he did lead them into winning field goal range in the SB. -
Some next day observations from my DVR
billsfan1959 replied to John from Riverside's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I actually do not blame McKenzie on this play. Allen is rolling out to his right, not really under pressure, and McKenzie comes out of the backfield and is wide open all the way to the endzone. It is a well designed play and you can see McKenzie looking back at Allen from around the 18 yard line on in. I have no idea why Allen was waiting to pull the trigger. If he hits Mckenzie in that range, McKenzie walks into the endzone. -
And therein lies the core of much of the debate on Allen. He can, what appears to many, make a bad throw to Beasley (shown in posts above) - that should be a fairly easy completion - and then make throws like this one. I love the kid and think he is going to just get better and better - becoming that franchise QB this team has been looking for since Kelly. However, I also understand some of the skepticism as well. I also think this pass is where Josh Allen's strength is at - that 18-25 yard range. I would love to see more designed plays to feature / maximize that strength

Search "Why are 7 of the 8 threads that show up on the TBD website at this moment about the Patriots?" -
Hey Hapless - thought I would add the All 22 to the conversation. It looks as if Allen is going to Beasley from the snap. When he throws, that ball is on Beasley just as he starts to turn his head (:23). It really is hard to tell if Allen expected Beasley to sit on that route or look to Allen sooner - or if it was a bad throw. I tend to go with the former, rather than the latter, only because not only was the pass behind Beasley, but, Beasley wasn't even looking for it yet. So, more of a miscommunication between the two. Like you said, maybe it is one of those plays where you have to be on the team to know exactly wha happened and who was at fault. I like this kind of discussion, though...

That will be an interesting game. Since the first two games, Jackson has looked exactly how he looked last year, not very good in the pocket but making big plays running the ball. The Pats did a good job of keeping Allen contained; however, I don't think Allen has been looking to make plays with his feet as much this year - while it is a big part of the Raven's offense.

Peter King about the Bills - 10/21
billsfan1959 replied to inthebuff's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Actually, White was probably anticipating a fake field goal. He had outside containment and clearly saw the direct snap to the holder. At that point, he can see the holder with the ball and the kicker moving toward the outside in White's direction. He does exactly what he is supposed to do in stepping forward to keep the runner inside. He then moves in to make the tackle (The view from behind the defense in the All 22 below shows this pretty well). Because White initially had to step forward to keep the runner inside, he was in a position to have to make the tackle more from the side than the front. This wasn't a case of taking the runner (a punter) head on and getting run over. It also wasn't a case of "attempting to ankle tackle the kicker" as you originally stated, which, by the way, is different than attempting to make a tackle and ending up bringing him down by the lower legs/ankles. But, I suspect you know that. To describe White as not paying attention, day-dreaming, or making some sort of "worst effort of the game" kind of attempt at a tackle, IMO, is a clear mischaracterization That is my opinion. I have included the video to support my conclusion, and, so that posters can look at it and make up their own minds -

Yeah, driving 98 yards is “capitalizing” on a turnover. Do you ever do any actual analyses of games? Or do you just come onto the board after each game with your usual stock takes? Because, honestly, most of your posts sound the same.....
