The Next Pandemic: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19

So, you have no clue either? Says the man who amazed us all with his intellectually stunning analysis of the UAE as a shining example of what the US could be..... -

And they have been working around the clock. You make statements with so much certainty, that you must be a subject matter expert. So, please take us through the process of developing two million test kits, distributing them, and administering them with the first week or so of cases coming up. -

South Korea 51,000,000 Italy 60,000,000 Spain 46,000,000 France 65,000,000 Germany 83,000,000 UK 67,000,000 Yeah, I'm sure none of them would have liked to administer 2 million tests... However, since you are such an expert on the topic. Please enlighten us on the logistics of manufacturing, distributing, and administering 2 million tests. Please, we would all love to learn from you. We'll wait -

Only that nobody has been able to administer 2 million tests to date, total, much less in the inital days of cases arising.... -

Forget the fact that to equal that testing, per capita, we would have had to administer 2,000,000 tests to their 300,000... -

Of course they are and we are about 10 days behind most of them. So, we will have more cases and more deaths before we start to stabilize and decline. That's not rocket science. I'm not cherry picking anything. When you look at our trajectory, our numbers more closely align with Germany than with the othe European countries - and it isn't just about testing. The fact is, I asked you to show me the countries, outside of South Korea, that are doing a better job at controlling the virus, because of testing, than the US. Your response is to give us... .....wait for it..... ....the UAE with their stunning success of having only 814 cases in a population of 9 million!!! Not Italy, Spain, Germany, the UK, etc....no, the UAE! Quite honestly, I am embarrassed for you -

1. To use a chart comparing the number of cases in a population of 330 million directly with the number cases in a population of 60 million, or one of 50 million is ridiculous and serves absolutely no purpose. 2. To use the UAE with a population of 9 million and virtually no cases of significance as a foundation for your arguments is even more ridiculous. There are plenty of countries out there with substantial populations and cases with which to make your arguments. Unfortunately, they don't support you. We are running away from Italy because we have over 200,000 cases and they are starting to stabilize in the low 100,000 range? Even though they have 1842 cases per million compared to our 616 case per million - and 219 deaths per million compared to our 13.5 deaths per million Forget understanding the data for me, spend some time trying to understand it for you -

Posting a chart that shows total numbers for different countries, regardless of population size? Again, show me some data in regard to cases and deaths per capita. And, seriously, comparing the United States, with a population of 333 million and over 200,000 cases, to the UAE with a population of 9 million and 814 total cases? This is why you can't be taken seriously. -

I'll give you South Korea, which seems like a real outlier at this point in comparison from the data from every other country. Which other countries, with any significant numbers of cases, have fewer cases per capita and fewer deaths per capita or per confirmed cases? -

""While a lot of people talk about job creation, Smollett put his money where his mouth is," said an NAACP spokesperson as Smollett received the award. He created two good, high-paying jobs well above minimum wage for these brothers. $3500 to pretend to be Trump supporters and fake an attack on a celebrity? Easy money. If all the wealthy and powerful were to help out like this, we would be able to eliminate joblessness among black adults," he added -
Posted in another thread, but belongs here.... "Fooling thousands of readers in a prank that the cable news organization said was "just for fun," CNN published a real news story for April Fools' Day this year. The story simply contained a list of facts, with no embellishment, editorializing, or invented details. The story also didn't cite shaky "anonymous sources" and only quoted firsthand witnesses to the event. It was completely factual without any errors whatsoever." "Baffled CNN fans immediately knew something was up."

Yep, I prefer the humorous side: "Fooling thousands of readers in a prank that the cable news organization said was "just for fun," CNN published a real news story for April Fools' Day this year. The measure of the death rate can be done by confirmed cases, total cases, per 100,000, etc. Measure it however you want. The data I provided showed that the increase in the death rate, in any way you want to measure it, is more on par with South Korea and Germany than it is with other countries. There is every reason to believe we will be able to provide the ICU beds, ventilators, etc. to not have our hospitals overwhelmed as they have been elsewhere. It remains to be seen. I appreciate the civil conversation. -

Again, what data, anywhere in this world right now tells you every person in this country (and it is 330 million, not 350 million) is going to be infected. Ridiculous. -

Well, since we don't have over a billion people in this country, I don't think your prediction will come through. I'll assume you meant 1,750,000 people, in which case I would ask you to site any data in any country in thei world that suggests that many people are going to die in this country. -

The numbers I cited are correct if you are looking at the data from a per capita perspective. Using total cases with such a disparity in populations sizes is completely misleading. Again, if we so badly mismanaged this and South Korea is such a shining example, why is our death rate, per confirmed cases, only 1/2 of a percent behind? And we haven't even conducted the same number of tests per capita - which would lower our figues even more. -

South Korea and Germany did a good job testing early. Germany has the added advantage of having far more ICU beds than any other country in Europe. However, for the US to equal the level of testing that Germany (roughly 1/4 of the population of the US) and South Korea (roughly 1/7 of the population of the US) we would have had to have almost 2 million tests being conducted fairly early. I'm not sure that would have been logistically possible. Even Germany, who, as you say has had a reliable test available is still only up to less than 500,000 tests per week after approx 3 weeks of testing. Even as important as testing is in identifying cases, stopping the spread, and early intervention, the death rate (per confirmed cases, since we don't have total cases) is 1.1% in Germany and 1.6% in South Korea. In the US, it is 2.1%. If we were at the same number of tests, per capita, as each of those countries, our numbers would be even closer to theirs, and better than any other country with a significant number of cases.. Do I think we could have done more, and can still do more? Yes. However, I don't believe the level of criticism I am hearing from some people is warranted or reasonable. -

Testing is important, no doubt. However, I'm not sure the level of testing, early on, that people in this thread have been saying should have been done, was logistically achievable. How do you suggest they could have produced the number of tests necessary to test a significant portion of this population early on? Serious question. Also, if we were so far behind the curve with our response, how is it we currently are only .5% behind South Korea in deaths per confirmed cases? And, if we had conducted the same number of tests, per capita, as South Korea, wouldn't our death rate be even closer to theirs? -

Testing is their go to issue now. Yet nobody has yet explained how Trump was supposed to have made a enough test kits (that we didn't yet possess, for a virus we hadn't encountered before, that was not immediately available in any volume from anywhere) available early to test any significant amount of a population of 330 million people. -

You do understand you can calculate the death rate per 100,000 people without testing everyone, right? We will know who died from the virus. Testing every single live person in this country doesn't affect the death rate per capita. That's really not how it works.... So, if we have the lowest death rate per capita, is that a success for you?
