  1. As a strictly practical matter you may be right about the bolded, but again I come back to the fact that we already have the power to remove said crooks, partisans, and egomaniacs from office on a regular basis, and we consistently choose not to. In that sense we get the government we deserve under the current system. My opposition to term limits is based on a somewhat idealized world where the electorate is knowledgeable and engaged enough to actually take out the congressional trash on a regular basis, because I think that’s the condition we should be striving for. That may be even more of pipe dream than getting congress to voluntarily enact term limits, however. ?

  3. The point isn’t if any of the current people in office are effective or not. The point is, if one were, would you want the ability to keep them there or be forced by the government to get rid of them? I’d rather the electorate be able to decide who stays or who goes and when. We already have the ability to limit terms for the house every two years and the senate every six, but we consistently choose not to. That shows me that to most people who claim to support term limits it either isn’t that important of an issue, or to you second point, they support them for those other guys but not when it come to their own. reducing graft is definitely an issue I’m on board with, I just don’t think term limits would do as much to that end as most proponents of term limits do, and would be less effective than other potential reforms in lobbying and campaign finance. I’m fine with presidential term limits because as the head of the executive branch he was never intended to be a direct representative of the people and has as much power by himself as all 535 members of Congress put together, but I remain leery of congressional term limits because of the restriction it places on the people’s ability to choose their representation.
  4. I agree 100%. In the context of term limits, I would posit that enacting term limits does in fact hand more power to the government, as it places a limit on the electorate’s power to choose their representation by taking away the ability to re-elect a popular, effective incumbent.
  5. To me while both those points have some validity, they are also just alternative ways of saying that term limits aren’t actually that important to most of the electorate, otherwise both of those obstacles could and would be overcome.
  6. I think the more important question is if term limits are so popular, why isn’t there a strong grass roots movement to elect someone else? The majority of the electorate can scream for term limits til they’re blue in the face, but when we the people keep re-electing the same incumbents over and over it rings hollow IMO.
  7. China says we should give up our guns seems to me all the more reason to keep them.
  8. I’m sure this guy would consider my .308 AR-10 one of those “mass shooter guns,” but there’s a buck in my freezer from this past fall that would probably disagree that it’s inaccurate and useless for hunting.

  10. Dershowitz going off is a thing of beauty.
  11. Thanks for the clarification. That’s what I thought you meant, but I wasn’t sure. WRT to the Trump vs. Bloomberg criticism comparison, I also heard that criticism of Trump 4 years ago, and still hear it today. To me the key difference is Bloomberg has a history of taking actions to that end in both his mayoral career and in the political nonprofit groups he has founded and funds.
  12. Just curious, what lesson would you like the party to learn by losing with Bernie? Also, Bloomberg is no moderate. He may not be a progressive socialist, but he’s a an authoritarian wannabe tyrant.
  13. My favorite part of the exchange was when the guy said “I’ll vote for you in the general if you treat me right” and Biden’s response was “well I’m not.” ???
  14. I paid off my undergrad loans last year, but still have $75k to go for grad school. As great as it would be for me personally to have that $75k bill disappear, the bottom line is it was my choice to take on the debt, so it’s my responsibility to pay it off, not Joe Taxpayer. My job qualifies me for public service Lon forgiveness after 10 years and I’m about 4 years away from that, but I plan to have it paid off before then.
  15. The randos calling in on c-span during the recesses seem to be mostly pro trump. Some of them are pretty entertaining
  16. Schiff should leave the top ten lists to SportsCenter and Letterman.

  18. Does Schumer really have 50 of these things or was that number speculation?

  21. Coin tosses aren’t actually 50/50. In an nfl style flip where the coin is allowed to fall to the ground, you should pick the side that is face up at the start of the flip for the best odds.
  22. My two main rooting interests in this years playoffs were the Bills winning and the Pats losing. Since I have neither of those to worry about anymore, I’m just looking forward to being able to watch stress free and hoping for some exciting games.
  23. BS call. Certainly everyone knows that his intent was to give himself up, but he never actually did it. It was a mental mistake that the Bills recognized and capitalized on, only to have points taken off the board because apparently now the game is selectively officiated based on subjective interpretations of what players meant to do, rather than what actually happens on the field. As bad as I would have felt for the guy for making such a costly and boneheaded mistake, that shouldn’t mean you can just ignore the rules and rob the other team in the process.
  24. Doing Christmas with my brother’s family (he lives in NC, I live in SC, I went back to Rochester for the actual holiday this year and he didn’t) and watching the game at his place.
  25. I think this team does have the talent to win a game or two, and I would say winning 2 games is a long playoff run. That means you’re playing three, and puts you in the AFC championship game starting as a wildcard.
