Head Coach candidate: Mike Shanahan
ChanOverChin replied to HOUSE's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Shanny would be our best HC hire since Marv Levy. He's accomplished something even Levy never accomplished.....winning TWO SBs!! Yet you mock him. Yeah, let's celebrate hiring a guy like A. Gase instead, a guy who has been an OC for exactly one year. handle the defense. You people are nuts!! Shanny is the type of HC that we need at this point in time. We already have Schwartz to handle the defense. What we need to complete the ensemble is an offensive minded HC who can bring proven coaches and successful schemes with him. Guess what.....Shanny can do that. His biggest undertaking would be to acquire a high quality starting QB. Because of who he is and what he's accomplished he just may give us a better chance to acquire a better QB. That could make all of the difference in the world right there. -
Don't just hire a HC. Make sure you know who that HC plans to bring with him at OC/DC/ST. That combination is as important as anything else. That combination of coaches should decide who is hired. I personally like the idea of keeping Schwartz as the DC for continuity purposes. Go ahead and blow up the offensive coaching brain trust if you must. I would much prefer an experienced NFL HC, not a neophyte. That HC does have to contend with Belichick twice a year, year after year, after all. Whaley appears to be a capable GM, but if the Bills can acquire someone better then by all means they should replace him. What HC plus assistants give us "the best chance" to beat Belichick for the division title?? That's the main question to be answered during the interview process. The answer will separate the men from the boys pretty damn quick.

Head Coach Candidate: Dan Quinn
ChanOverChin replied to 1billsfan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
We already have a very good defensive mind under contract in Schwartz. As a result, I think we need an offensive minded HC or at least a HC who can bring a very good, experienced OC with him. Bringing in guys that have never been an NFL HC along with an OC who has never been an NFL OC is very, very risky.......and probably not a good idea. We just tried that with Hackett. The results speak for themselves. -
Knee jerk reaction to who will be bills new HC
ChanOverChin replied to truth on hold's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Why Cowher?? Seriously???????? Because he's the only proven winner at HC in the group mentioned. He's actually won the SB, which is what we are still chasing. Reich has potential, but would be very risky IMHO. Experience matters. We need someone who can beat Belichick. Schwartz wasn't a very god HC IMHO. Ryan wasn't a very good HC either. -

Keep Schwartz as the DC...for obvious reasons. Bring in Cowher as HC and N. Turner as Asst. HC/OC. Then we'll have something. -
Who will Pollian get for QB ?
ChanOverChin replied to Buffalo Barbarian's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Irsay actually has a severe prescription drug problem. If and when Polian is hired you can bet a he'll get us a high quality starting QB. -
Obviously, Pegula had no plans to bring Marrone back, obviously. Marrone wasn't that good anyway. Good riddance! Hiring B. Polian would be a huge coup. He is still the best GM the Bills ever had. He will bring a high quality HC with name assistants. Bottom line: Polian would make us legit again. It's well known that Pegula is friends with Bill Cowher. Cowher has connections and could bring a proven group of asst. coaches with him. The key will be whether the Bills can lure a high quality QB to Buffalo. Scenarios: HC Cowher/OC N. Turner/DC Schwartz. HC Reich/OC N. Turner/DC Schwartz. The Bills could lure Turner by making him Asst. HC.

Holy **** balls???
-
It's time to see what RB B. Brown can do. Use Spiller as more of a wide-out or to catch short passes out of the backfield in space rather than handing him the ball and watching him dance for a 3 yd loss more times than not. Get WR M. Williams on the field instead of Goodwin, who is frail and weak. Why play guys like L. Smith and Gragg so much like we did vs the Pats?? MW and Hogan are both better players. Use Hairston as part of an unbalanced line at times to beef up the running game and provide max protection at times to get the ball to Watkins/Woods. It's up to Marrone/Hackett/Downing to figure this stuff out.
-
I'm shocked that nobody has mentioned how poorly Duke Williams played vs the Pats. He blatantly pushed Edelman in the end zone to give the Pats the ball at our 1 yd line, which he didn't have to do. He also got torched by Gronkowski all day long. He is our absolute worst coverage DB so somebody please tell me why the Bills chose to have him cover Gronk for the entire game?? What a disaster. ,

Bills Cornerbacks are terrible.
ChanOverChin replied to BuffaloBillsForever's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The coaches need to wake up and establish a pecking order for our CBs. We don't have three equal guys!! Graham is our best CB right now. When Gilmore is completely healthy, he is probably #2. McKelvin gets torched regularly or holds or gets called for illegal contact......especailly when it's 3rd and long. No way should he be on the field as much as the other two guys. That has to change..................effective immediately. Robey does a very good job vs the slot receiver. Brooks is definitely #5 on the depth chart. The bottom line................get Graham on the field and keep him on the field at all times. -
Week 2 predictions: Squish the Fish
ChanOverChin replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This will be a tough game to win since the Dolphins have a strong running game (Moreno) and a ferocious pash rush. I think our run defense will contain Moreno and our pass defense will force Tannehill to make multiple mistakes. Bills win 24-13. Vikings are better than you think with Turner as the OC and Zimmer calling the defensive plays. Vikings win 23-20. Packers' pass rush is too much for Geno Smith to handle. Packers win 31-20. Those results would put the Bills in first place in the AFC East as follows: Bills 2-0 Dolphins 1-1 Jets 1-1 Pats 0-2. -
I'm rooting for you EJ. I think we all are. You have to realize that you're only going to be given so much time to show what you can do. People's jobs are on the line. Be confident and just let it all hang out. Do be afraid to make mistakes. if you make more big plays than poor ones people will remember the big plays.

Over/under for Orton starts this season
ChanOverChin replied to Bills Fan since '64's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think the Bills will give Manuel THREE games to prove himself. If he plays like he did in the preseason he will be replaced by Orton. It's just a matter of time really. Orton wouldn't have signed with the Bills and the Bills wouldn't have paid him $5M for this season if they weren't planning to make such a move. i think Orton will be starting by Week 4. Of course, Manuel is somewhat injury prone, so it could be even sooner just based upon injury. -
.................by Game #4 says Greg Gabriel. Linky: http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/On-the-hot-seat.html. Gabriel's article is a must read for Bills fans. I have been clamoring for this move since the start of training camp because it was obvious that our QBs were not good enough to win in the NFL. I have not given up on Manuel. He may just need more time to develop. I'm hoping that he can learn from a polished vet QB like Orton. Just because you're drafted in R1 doesn't mean you're ready to start in the NFL. T. Lewis proved to be a dud. Tuel will likely be signed to the Bills' PS......and he should be. He too needs more time to develop as a pro. Orton will give us the best chance to win THIS YEAR if Gabriel is right. We have the defense. We have the offensive weapons. We have a solid ST. We just need a capable QB........and Orton ppears to be our best bet at his point. What are your thoughts regarding the premise of the article??

Rotoworld's top 44 available QBs
ChanOverChin replied to PlayoffsPlease's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Many of us were clamoring for Orton long before we knew he was listed as the #1 FA QB. Manuel, Orton, Palmer sure looks a lot better than Manuel, Lewis, Tuel. Gotta have depth at QB for when Manuel gets hurt. -
How Can Anyone Turn This Team Around?
ChanOverChin replied to Storm Front's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The priority should have been to obtain a top notch QB wihin the last two years. Manuel doesn't seem to be that man. He was a reach to be taken in R1 when most other NFL GMs had him rated in R4 or later. Do the Bills really think that their smarter than everybody else?? The Bills were willing to part with two R1 picks and a R4 pick for a WR, but they should have used those picks and whatever else was needed to obtain a franchise QB. Get your franchise QB first!! Nothing against Watkins. I firmly believe that he will be a great player, but we need a franchise QB far more than we need a franchise WR. The Bills were foolish to put all of their eggs in one basket with Manuel. He's just not ready...........may never be ready. I agree completely with boatdrinks. For the Bills to turn things around they need: 1. a franchise QB; 2. Belichick/Brady to retire. It's ridiculous how much the Belichick/Brady combo overmatches every other HC/starting QB in the AFC East. -
It's about firetruckin' time!! I mentioned that they needed to do this weeks ago. I challenged anyone to name three NFL teams that had a worse QB group than the Bills. Manuel has been erratic at best. The other three QB bozos on the roster probably don't deserve to wear an NFL uniform. It's going to be a very loooonnnnnnnnnnnnggggggggggggggggggg season my friends if something doesn't change real quick at the QB position.

My Untrained Eye -- thoughts on BUF/PIT
ChanOverChin replied to eball's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I saw the replay of the Pitt/Buff game yesterday on DirecTV, CH 212 via TIVO. Here are my random thoughts: This just in, Woods is a very good player. He could prove to be the most productive WR on the roster this year. Manuel was efficient. Most of his passes were short, quick, safe throws. The first team did not get the ball into the end zone, which has to be concerning, but Manuel showed that he can move the ball and can be consistent. Rberger and A. Brown were dominant. Spiller could be a real weapon on KOs. TJ Graham looked quick and decisive on punt returns. I think it will be a tough call to cut him. If he is cut some team will quickly snap him up. Our first and second string defense stuffed the run and that's tough to do vs the Steelers. DT Cohen is quick and agile for a 300 lber. He's making a strong bid to make the team. He makes you take notice when he's on the field, which is not easy to do for a DT. QB T. Lewis is an elusive runner, but doesn't have what it takes to be a quality backup QB. He's terrible against any sort of pass rush. QB J. Tuel is not much better than Lewis. He makes poor decisions under pressure. It's obvious that the Bills need help at QB behind Manuel. I think LB R. Johnson is a beast. He's aggressive and hit hard. Spikes/Bradham/Rivers/Brown are our four best LBs. I think Johnson is #5. Pollard/Sylvester/Gaines were not impressive vs the Steelers. DE J. Smith got a strip sack. He fast around the corner. He might find a way to sneak onto the roster if he can play ST. Our safeties minus A. Williams don't take good angles to the ball. D. Williams is a stud tackler, but he has a lot to learn in coverage. I have not been impressed with Gilmore so far. Shutdown corner my a$$. Robey consistently makes plays. He needs to be on the field as often as possible for that reason. C. Graham is starting to come on. He plays like a wiley vet. He reads plays well and reacts to them quickly. He demolished two different WR screens single-handedly. Overall: We were missing a lot of key players: Glenn/McKelvin/C. Williams/Watkins got hurt very early on/etc. so we weren't at full strength. You can see that we have a lot of talented players and more depth than usual, but can we put it all together to play well consistently?? I have my doubts at this point. We could not contain Rberger/A. Brown in a very short time frame and the first team offense still has not scored a TD, which has to have the Bills' coaches concerned. -
Here is one projection (not mine) that is interesting to consider. Pos. # Starter # Backup # Reserve # Reserve XR 14 Sammy Watkins 88 Marquise Goodwin SR 10 Robert Woods 15 Chris Hogan LT 77 Cordy Glenn 66 Seantrel Henderson LG 74 Chris Williams 68 Cyril Richardson C 70 Eric Wood RG 60 Kraig Urbik 75 Chris Hairston RT 79 Erik Pears 71 Cyrus Kouandjio TF 84 Scott Chandler 85 Lee Smith 38 Frank Summers 48 Evan Rodriguez ZR 19 Mike Williams 81 Marcus Easley QB 3 EJ Manuel 7 Jeff Tuel 9 Thad Lewis RB 28 C.J. Spiller 22 Fred Jackson 26 Anthony Dixon 35 Bryce Brown Pos. # Starter # Backup # Reserve # Reserve RE 55 Jerry Hughes 91 Manny Lawson UT 95 Kyle Williams 97 Corbin Bryant NT 99 Marcell Dareus 90 Alan Branch LE 94 Mario Williams 92 Jarius Wynn WLB 53 Nigel Bradham 56 Keith Rivers 58 Stevenson Sylvester MLB 51 Brandon Spikes 52 Preston Brown 57 Ty Powell RCB 21 Leodis McKelvin 20 Corey Graham SCB 37 Nickell Robey 29 Ross Cockrell S 23 Aaron Williams 27 Duke Williams S 25 Da'Norris Searcy 36 Jonathan Meeks LCB 24 Stephon Gilmore 33 Ron Brooks Pos. # Starter # Backup # Reserve # Reserve K 2 Dan Carpenter P 8 Brian Moorman LS 65 Garrison Sanborn I'm still holding out hope for TE Moeaki, although he does seem to be a little too much injury prone. Time will tell on him. We could really use a second TE who can both block and receive. It would help to keep opposing defenses honest and give Manuel another safety valve. He would take Rodriguez's spot shown above. I'd like to see WR TJ Graham make the final roster, but he faces an uphill battle vs Hogan unless he can contribute on ST. If the Bills decide to keep Hogan I hope that they are at least able to get something for Graham via a trade. it would hurt to just outright cut Graham. Tuel is the clear #2 QB at this point. I don't think that Lewis has a roster spot sewn up. If he doesn't play better than he did vs the G-men then I don't expect him to make the final roster. C. Bryant faces a tough battle vs both Charles and Cohen. I could see anyone of the three making the final roster at this point. i have Charles leading the way currently, then Bryant and then Cohen. The Bills are not going to cut Kouandjio. Hopefully, he improves in the next four weeks. At this point in time (which will likely change after the 5 PS games are played), I would make the following changes to the roster projection shown above: 1. TE Moeaki for FB/TE Rodriguez. 2. DT Charles for DT Bryant. What say you regarding the final roster at this point in time??

My point to all of you wasn't to mislead you. I am always very optimistic when it comes to the Bills. I've been a fan for a very long time (50 years)....that's a lot of losing to endure my friends. I want the Bills to succeed more than anything, but we you see the lack of confidence, the poor decisions, the inaccuracy you have to call it like it is. I've just seen way too many former Bills QBs come and go. I just wanted to see something encouraging. What I saw from Manuel the other night was NOT encouraging. He was not comfortable in the pocket. He did not act like a starting NFL QB. I'm not saying that he's a bust, but it appears to me that he could be......and I don't even like saying that. Secondarily, it seems very odd to me that a team who is intent on making the playoffs does not have a high quality vet QB for Manuel to learn from or who could take over for him to keep us in the hunt for the playoffs. From what i saw vs the Giants it appears that we are way too weak at QB to make a playoff run this year. I hope that Manuel snaps out of it...and soon.
-
if our QBs continue to stink it up. He was visibly disappointed in all three of his QBs.........as was I. If you saw the game you'd have to admit that Manuel was horrible. He stares down his receivers way too much. Three blocked passes out of seven. Are you shttin' me?? Not impressive at all. Tuel looked the best of the three, but he's not ready to lead this team. He's a below average #2 NFL QB. Lewis was terrible. He showed no confidence in the pocket. To be fair, his LT E. Coughman was an absolute turnstile. He'll get cut if he plays like that again. I'm just shocked that the Bills think they can win with these guys at QB. If there are three worse QB groups in the NFL I'd like to hear somebody name them. I know, it's just PS game #1. Still, it wasn't very encouraging.

Training Camp Position Battles
ChanOverChin replied to ChanOverChin's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Urbik will be the starting RG and will get beat up over time. They can't afford to not take Legursky to be the backup OC for that reason. Legursky is a experienced NFL OC. He's a valuable player to have as backup OC. The Bills could do a lot worse. Most have soured on sky because he didn't fare well as starting OG. He's too small to play OG, but just right play OC. I have high hopes for Hairston, who should be an excellent swing OT.
