Putting aside the players....cap space an issue now
ChanOverChin replied to DC Grid's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Look for the Bills to cut Urbik, C. Williams, E. Pears, C. Chandler ($3.5M last year) and not resign Spiller ($5.2M last year) or Searcy (who wants big money this year). They may not resign Spikes ($3.5M last year). They already cut Rivers ($1.7M) and won't likely resign OLB Dean or OT Hairston. They could still resign DE Hughes, sign a name QB, sign CB Revis (for about $12M), sign TE J. Cameron, trade for TE Vern. Davis, and sign their 2015 draft picks. -
Absolutely. Harris has been the plan at ILB all along. He knows Ryan's defense and will be the leader of it. DT Kendrick Ellis along w/ CB D. Revis and CB A. Cromartie are other former NYJ players to keep an eye on. It would be awesome to get Harris and Revis. Ryan understands all too well that taking Revis away from the Pats is a big part of making him a Bill.

It shows you that the Bills just got over on the Eagles. McCoy is just 27. He's a huge difference-maker on offense. Every great offense needs a very good QB/RB/WR. We have McCoy and Watkins. Now we need EJ to step up or the Bills need to make a move for a difference-maker at QB. Is D. Brees next?? Don't tell ME that ain't possible. If one of you mofos had suggested that the Bills trade Alonso for McCoy you would have been laughed off this site. You would have been ridiculed.....persecuted.......crucified.

Your next Bills QB will be...the Sanchise.
ChanOverChin replied to ChanOverChin's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The Bills really only have one viable QB on the roster....EJ. They're going to need to acquire at least two more QBs for that reason. One will likely be a vet and the other a younger guy either via the draft or trade. I'm not saying that Sanchez is a franchise QB or even some great QB. His track record says clearly that he's not. However, when stacked against the guys that are available to us he looks pretty good. IMHO, he's the best of what's available. Watch his highlights (i.e. my first post). He's very athletic and a very capable QB. If he can minimize the INTs he could be good enough to get us into the playoffs. -

Let's face it....the Bills are desperate at QB. Most likely they're not going to be able to acquire a franchise QB at this point.....and that really sucks for us. Sanchez can be a very capable player in the right system. He is the best QB available (minus a trade). The Bills would be lucky to get him at this point. I would rate the available QBs as follows: 1. Sanchez (had success with Philly last year) 2. M. Moore (worth a look) 3. Locker (talented but very, very injury prone) 4. Hoyer (a very good backup QB). -

ChanOverChin replied to ChanOverChin's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Sanchez is better than both Locker and Cassell. Petty is a project that will take longer than EJ to develop. Sanchez has shown that he can win in the NFL. He could be the starter and be a very good, experienced backup to EJ. Rex knows what he's getting with Sanchez and I think now that he is the best available QB on the market that he will end up in Buffalo. I would love to see EJ outperform Sanchez. That would be the best case scenario, of course. What do you think the Bills would have to pay for Sanchez?? maybe $4-5M per year for 2-3 years?? -
Mark Sanchez is the best available FA QB on the market. Rex is obviously very familiar with the Sanchise and still thinks highly of him. Sanchez showed he could be pretty good as the starting QB for Philly last year. He is our best option at this point.....minus a trade for a vet QB. I expect the Bills to sign him now that McCown is no longer an option. See his highlights. The link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8LL8FHwqDTs. Sanchez is athletic, can make all the throws, and is very experienced. His main bugaboo is that he throws too many INTs. If Roman can help him with that he just might give us the fighting chance that we need.

Can EJ be the starting QB for the Bills
ChanOverChin replied to BillsFan-4-Ever's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Wouldn't it be a kick in the head if EJ proves to be the best QB on the roster even after the Bills go out and acquire two vet QBs?? It could certainly happen. Usually year 3 is the magical year for most young, highly drafted players. They're finally comfortable with the pro game and believe they can get the job done. EJ has a lot of redeeming qualities that will help him to be a quality starter in the NFL. This is the year that he has to show us that he is THE man. -
Offensive Line FA's, an in depth look
ChanOverChin replied to Estro's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Expect the Bills to pursue Iupati as a top priority. He is the best run blocking OG in the league......a monster of a man. Roman knows him well and will push hard for him. -
Jets, Bills to pursue Revis (Update-Signed with Jets)
ChanOverChin replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't see us signing Revis. We may kick the tires, but the price will be too much. Paying Revis would mean not being able to resign Hughes as well as signing other outside FAs to improve the team. -
I don't see how the Bills expect to compete for the playoffs with a below average to average starting QB (Sanchez/Hoyer) or a young developing QB. (Manuel). With so many high quality FAs available at so many positions (except QB) they can fill those other needs if they really want to. They won't get a starting QB in this year's draft most likely. It's time that Ryan learn his lesson and go get a real starting QB. I'm talking about P. Manning, Brees, RGIII, etc. Settling for Sanchez or Hoyer or worse is not going to get it done.

QB J. McCown is in Buffalo today to try to sign a contract with the Bills according to V. Carrucci. The deal is expected to be done by this Friday, 2-27-15. If the deal does come to fruition, what are your thoughts?? I kinda like it. McCown was the top FA last year and again this year. He's expected to be an upgrade over K. Orton.

I agree that the strong defense/running game won't necessarily garner the Bills a SB championship. However, what choice do they have without the benefit of a franchise QB??? They can't just manufacture a franchise QB out of thin air. They're best bet is too solidify what they can until they can find that franchise QB. They can solidify the defense by keeping Hughes and Spikes while adding a few players that fit Ryan's scheme. They can improve the O-line, which will help the running game and the QB. It's a no-brainer. After that they need to add some offensive weapons at RB, TE, and WR. McCown is not a bad option as a caretaker at QB. He would be my first choice among the FAs that are available. Sanchez #2. Hoyer #3. They could certainly look to trade for a guy like Brees or Bradford or Foles, but they need a willing partner to do that.

I think we can already see that the combination of Doug Whaley and Rex Ryan is going to be a good one. Believe it or not, many NFL GMs/HCs either don't get along or simply don't ever get on the same page because their philosophies are so different. That doesn't appear to be the case with Whaley and Ryan. Ryan and Whaley seem to both believe that the way to best build this Bills team is through outstanding defense and a strong running game. That seems to be a very wise game plan considering that the Bills don't have a proven strength at QB and play about half their season in cold, wintery weather (when it's not always conducive to throwing the football 40-50 times per game). I thought that Whaley's QA session with the media was especially impressive. I really liked everything that he said and what he plans to do. I think that he started to show last year during the draft that he was willing to take chances, make trades (trade up, trade down), etc. to better the team.....unlike his predecessor, who always played it close to the vest (and who I thought set us back as the GM of the Bills). Whaley exudes a lot of confidence now. I think his association with Ryan (and Roman and their team of coaches) will embolden him to be aggressive in making the moves that need to be made in the offseason to get this team to the playoffs in 2015. The bottom line is that Ryan knows what he needs to build a winner. Whaley seems to agree with what Ryan would like to do so I can see him doing everything he can to try to acquire certain type players at key positions. Ryan didn't get that type of support with NYJ. NYJ didn't retain the shutdown corners (Revis and Cromartie) or replace them adequately that Ryan needed for instance On offense that means bigger RBs and a true blocking FB. More quality TEs. OLs who excel at blocking for the running game. A big WR to add to Watkins/Woods/Hogan. A QB like Manuel may have a good shot at succeeding in such an offense. Expect a vet QB to be added for sure though because of Manuel's youth/inexperience. Someone like McCown or Sanchez or Hoyer I would expect. On defense that means adding a run stuffer (both DTs from the Jets are FAs, K. Ellis and Harrison). I think Ryan will look to add one or even both of them. Keeping Hughes and adding a hybrid DE (possibly a draft pick here or a former Jet). Adding LB D. Harris will likely be a priority to lead the defense Ryan's way. Harris could be priority #1 for Ryan. Spikes has a shot to stay as a part-time player. I don't see the Bills paying Searcy the big money so he will need to be replaced. I also don't see the Bills being able to acquire Revis. I do see the Bills adding at least one vet FA CB like V. Maxwell or Cromartie or Flowers. Here's an idea: they could add 2 of the 3 and then trade McKelvin and his $4.5M salary for a mid R1 pick. Overall, I really like what I see from Whaley. He comes off as very bright, very energetic, and very resourceful.

Would you trade our 2016 1st rd pick for Drew Brees?
ChanOverChin replied to Tipster19's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Q: How do the Saints get under the cap when they are more than $20M over?? They're not going to extend his contract to keep paying him $15M+ when he's 35 yrs old. A: A few different ways. But whatever they do it's going to significantly weaken they're roster. Do they then pay Brees $15M+ per season with an even weaker roster than last year's team that was lucky to win 6 game?? They're choice will be: 1. Keep Brees at $15M+ and cut 5-6 significant players (which doesn't make a whole lot of sense because they might have Brees, but then they would be too weak at other positions to compete for a playoff spot). 2. Trade or release Brees plus cut 1-2 others. This might sense to them if they can get something for Brees while also ridding themselves of his huge salary. Cap hell is, well, hell. -
Would you trade our 2016 1st rd pick for Drew Brees?
ChanOverChin replied to Tipster19's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Why?? Brees is a top 5 QB in the league still to this day. He is the difference-maker that the Bills need. Give me reasons why he wouldn't be what I said he would be and then let's discuss. The Saints are going to have to seriously think about letting him go this year, one way or the other. -
Would you trade our 2016 1st rd pick for Drew Brees?
ChanOverChin replied to Tipster19's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The Saints are in cap hell since they are $20M+ over the cap. They will have to release a number of veteran players to just get under the cap and sign their 2015 draft picks. With that in mind, they could be looking to dump their 35 yr old starting QB and start anew. This is where the Bills' QB search should start and hopefully end. With Brees running the show in Buffalo the Bills will make the playoffs and even have a better than average shot at the SB. IMHO, Brees even offers better value at this point in his career than P. Manning, who appears to be fragile and on his last legs, but certainly still very talented. Brees probably still has a good three years in him. Sign or trade for him and develop Manuel in the meantime. Your thoughts?? -
Predict Jerry Sullivan's reaction
ChanOverChin replied to PromoTheRobot's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I thought M. Shanny was the best qualified HC, but that Ryan was a close second. With Roman as the OC I actually like the combo of Ryan/Roman/Schwartz over M. Shanny/K. Shanny/Schwartz because Ryan knows the AFC East and can compete with Belichick. and because Roman really is a stud OC. He could be our future HC someday. But one of that will matter if the Bills can't acquire a high quality QB. -
Predict Jerry Sullivan's reaction
ChanOverChin replied to PromoTheRobot's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Who cares what Sully thinks. Finally we get a guy who can outcoach Belichick. Roman may end up being the true gem when all is said and done. I hope Ryan finds a way to keep Schwartz. I know that I would. We should reap the benefits in the FA market. If we can get a HQ QB, watch out. -
Package Deal? (Mike & Kyle Shanahan)
ChanOverChin replied to hondo in seattle's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
K. Shanny was so bad that he immediately landed a job with Cleveland. Go figure. The Washington situation was unique. RGIII got injured and was never the same again. Not even close. They had to play inexperienced guys at QB most of the time.....and we know full well how well that goes. Add in a meddling/controlling owner and you have a recipe for disaster. Hey, I'm not saying that the Shannies are without flaws. They're not perfect. But they are royalty compared with the guys that are competing for the Bill's HC job. Anytime you want to compare M. Shanny to any of the other candidates you let me know. What I like most about the prospect of hiring M. Shanny is that he has proven that he can outcoach and beat Belichick on a regular basis. That alone should be enough to sway you. If you don't consider G. Williams, Mularkey, Jauron, Gailey, Marrone lousy to no better than average NFL HCs then I might as well be talking to the wall. Nix was a horrible GM to boot. it all starts with the guys who are making the important decisions. If you don't have guys who can match wits with the likes of Belichick then you might as well resign yourself to second best......or in Buffalo's case................the embarrassment of not being good enough to make the playoffs in 14 fuggin' years. -
Package Deal? (Mike & Kyle Shanahan)
ChanOverChin replied to hondo in seattle's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think that it's obvous that the Bills want to hire M. Shanahan as their HC (I know that Russ Brandon is lobbying very hard for it). He would likely bring his son on as the OC and keep Schwartz as the DC. I think that would be the best case scenario for the Bills at this point in time since they are strong on defense, but need a lot of help on offense. This is the group that I think the Bills would like to employ for 2015 and beyond. They could sell it to the Shannies by telling them that Kyle would be in line for the HC job when his Dad decides to call it quits. Mike will obviously want more control than just being the HC. That's mostly because the Bills don't currently have a "starter ready" QB and he will want to hand pick the QB if he is to take on the job. Schwartz is under contract for the next two years. I don't see any reason why M. Shanny would want to replace him given what he and the Bills' defense accomplished last year. The problem is that both San Fran and Oakland both want M. Shanny as their HC. Imagine that. So many people on this board think Shanny is washed up and would rather take a chance on a young coach who has never coached a game in his life as an NFL HC. That's just pure folly and that kind of thinking is why the Bills haven't made the playoffs in 14 fuggin' years!!!! The point is that the Bills will have to fight hard to acquire Shanny and rightfully so. The difference this time around may be two fold: 1. The Pegulas have billions and may be willing to pay Shanny more than SF and Oakland. 2. The Pegulars recognize that an NFL Czar is needed to properly direct the team and they may be willing to make Shanny that guy (with possibly Whaley or someone else working as more of an admin. GM). It'll be interesting to see what happens. -
Have the Bills learned their lesson??
ChanOverChin replied to ChanOverChin's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
No, not Cowher. Guess again. We've already tried the one year wonders at least FIVE times recently. Where did that get us?? -
So many times in the recent past the Bills brain trust has tried to find that "diamond in the rough" HC. G. Williams, Mularkey, Jauron, Gailey, Marrone.............the list reads like a who's who of coaches who never accomplished a damn thing as an NFL HC prior to being hired by the Bills. Not a damn thing. Each one has been one very big mistake after the other. And yet the wisdom that is this board continues to call for those who fit that very same category. "Let's hire Quinn or Bevell or Gase" they say. "No, I like H. Jackson or F. Reich" others would say. Wake up people. Wake the f-iretr-uck up!!!!!! After hiring at least five very weak HC hopefuls don't you think that it's finally time to bring in a HC who actually has had a very successful track record?? Someone who has proven to be a successful NFL HC, who has NFL connections, who has won multiple SBs, and who has actually outcoached B. Beenachick over the years. If I told you that that guy was available, would you want the Bills to hire him?? As the very wise M. Levy used to say, "If you don't know your history, you're doomed to repeat it"!! Yes, it's finally time to go with the proven NFL HC...............and see where that takes us. I just hope that the Pegulas are listening.

Scathing article in NY Daily News on Marrone
ChanOverChin replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It was plain to me that Marrone would be nothing more than an average NFL HC. Typical lousy hire by the Bills/Buddy Nix. Wasn't Buddy the one who drafted Manuel in R1 as well?? Yep. Now you know why the Bills are where they are. Bring in a proven NFL HC for a change instead of these hopeful, "never have done a damn thing in the NFL" type guys. -
Who do you want to be named next Bills HC?
ChanOverChin replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Bring in the HOFer (Shanny) who will give us the best possible offense and keep Schwartz as the DC. The Bills have denied Schwartz the opp. to leave for a HC job so he is staying put. That's all the more reason to bring in an offensive minded HC. Don't judge Shanny on what he did in Wash. It was a bad situation with the RGIII injury and the Wash. owner (Snyder) being a meddler. We would kick a$$ with Shanny and Schwartz. The Bills will find a way to bring in a high quality QB for next year.
