Requiem for a sports columnist

Requiem for a sports columnist
Green Lightning replied to WIDE LEFT's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The OP has it about right, but so do those who say if he plays he stays. I stopped reading him many years ago because he was a cynic, not a skeptic. That and he basically wrote the same column over and over again. I found him boring and lazy. So I didn't read him. Problem solved. Likely a lot of others stopped reading him as well because if his numbers were up he'd still be there. P*ssing in Cheerios daily doesn't constitute an opposing view. I used to refer to him as the "little cloud that cried." I don't think he ever had a nice day in his life and wanted everyone else to feel like crap along with him. -

Bills and Sabres Weekends
Green Lightning replied to Jamie Nails's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Solid logic. It's cool she likes the glass. My wife has no sports gene at all and tolerates a Bills or Sabres game every now and then. But she really got into one Sabres game when I scored tix on the glass. Even stood and shouted. Surprised the Hell out of me. -
Got a call from my season ticket rep yesterday

Congrats! You deserve it. That said many of us lifers deserve some love from OBD for our decades of loyalty to the franchise! -
Exactly.

Okay but I hope you don't hold it against me. It's all about the Bills official Draft parties on the first day of the draft. I first attended in 2000, and they chose Erik Flowers. I blamed myself and stayed home the next year. So I attended again in 2002, and they chose Mike Williams. I began to suspect that I may have brought with me some dark energy. I took several years off and thought that the worst was over. So I attended again in 2009, and they chose Mayhem Maybin. Now my family was blaming me. I laid low for a few years to return in 2014, the Watkins pick. This year, even my nephew asked I not attend. I readily agreed. I knew it was going to be a quarterback year and did not want to be responsible for what happened. So this time, whatever happens, you can't blame me.

That is just revisionist history. Tyrod lacks the ability to anticipate, to throw a receiver open. It's not his lack of faith in his own receivers it is a lack of faith in his own judgment and ability. And that's the Tyrod you will see this year in Cleveland. Still, he's a serviceable quarterback who will have some success in Cleveland as he did here. I like him and wish him well.

Well that made zero sense, but maybe your little rant made you feel better. My post that you quoted was reacting to the statement that McBeane would make a quarterback change next year and draft another one if they thought Alan couldn't cut it. I said I don't think it would be that easy, it's at least a three-year project and no way would they only give Allen next year. And then you went off like a bottle rocket, so go figure. The discussion was not about your man crush on Allen, it was about McBeane's future being tied to the Allen pick, good or bad. Try reacting to things in context. -

The moron will probably sue and win. #sad. That said, the security guards probably would have done more damage once they caught up with him. -

Sorry, there's no way they're going to make a decision after one year. This is a three-year process and therein lies the danger. Do you set the franchise back or move it forward. That'll tell the tale. I like these guys and I want them to succeed but you got to be realistic. Allen was a high-stakes pick we're just going to have to see. -
Is your Dad the reason you’re a Bills fan?
Green Lightning replied to Another Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yep. Dad took us the Rockpile and we saw Jack Kemp and the team in their AFL championship years. He's passed now but now my brother has intsilled the fever on to his son and daughters. -

I don't disagree, but by Beane's own words the job of a GM is to pick a quarterback. You screw it up at a quarterback year you're going to pay thrme price. And it won't be after this year, these things usually take 3 years to shake out and then you know. So I don't think you pick another quarterback next year no way. -
Coaches don't block. You still need talent. Save for Shady, nobody on our offense rises above midling. I'm just being realistic.

I don't think it'll be that easy. If our Josh stinks and the other Josh excels I don't think they survive. Conversely, they'll be heroes if it works. This was the year to pick a quarterback, the talent drops off next year. That's just not reality. The rap on Allen was accuracy and process time. And it came from almost all draft evaluators. Allen is boom or bust. If it's the later, Mcbeane can't say they weren't inform of it. Especially if Rosen excels and Allen doesn't. -
RIP Al Meltzer - Play by play guy for Bills
Green Lightning replied to Kelly the Dog's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I love Van and all of his quirks, but as far as solid play-by-play goes Meltzer was the best. Really excellent at what he did. That said, Van was a Buffalo guy. -

Not as much as McBeane does. Their jobs in Legacy all rest on that kid. Not so goofy, pro franchises gamble on raw talent all the time. The odds are against you but it doesn't stop them from doing it. -
Hard to not see the offense not taking a step back this year. There's just not a ton of talent in this line up on the O side. The D will keep us in games, but unlike last year I think we turn the ball over a lot more. I'm prepping myself for a mediocre year, but hopefully will see our young talent start to blossom towards season's end. It's part of the process.
