I could wax on about all the stuff I don't like about the "modern" game but the primary reason I'm less interested... Priorities change as you get older and you choose to do different things with your Sunday afternoons and your time overall. For example, if its a beautiful Sunday afternoon in fall, there's 0% chance of me being parked in front of a television or in a bar.

By modern standards, the story is a bit lame. For 1986, the movie had a lot of big, known names, it had a soundtrack that was just as popular as the movie itself. It was also an immensely popular rental in the dawn of the affordable VHS where you had video rental stores popping up all over the place. It also had something movies at the time did not - nearly full cooperation from the US Navy so being on the deck of a carrier was like a first generation IMAX experience.

Not the most hilarious thing they presented to the public recently. They literally made ED-209 from RoboCop. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-trending-45282805

Election 2020: Shpuld Trump Be Primaried
dpberr replied to The_Dude's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
+1 on Kasich. Rubio was so terrified of making a mistake he often said nothing and did nothing of substance. His number one priority was covering his own ass. Nikki Haley is the female version of Marco Rubio. If in theory, the Republicans wanted to give Trump some competition, I think they'd need a businessperson like him without all the baggage and his propensity to create baggage. I don't think anybody cares about insider Washington politicos in a post-Trump era. -
Election 2020: Shpuld Trump Be Primaried
dpberr replied to The_Dude's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Nobody is taking down an !@#$ who's presiding over a good economy. It's never happened in the history of electing Presidents. I absolutely agree Trump is a mess. He tweets too much, talks too much, and if he'd spend a fraction of the energy he spends being dramatic on a real problem, he'd have a great legacy. If the majority of Americans had to choose between: Obama, good guy with eight years of a lousy economy or: Trump, not so good guy with eight years of great economy I bet Trump wins that election each time. It'd be different if Trump had an Obama era economy but he doesn't. People ask themselves one question in the booth: Am I and my family better off today than we were four years ago? The bottom line of self interest never loses. I think the one thing that is lost in this Manafort/Cohen issue is that this is how both sides behave. In an alternate reality where Hillary Clinton is President, she's being investigated just as intently. (Servers, the Foundation, etc.) It's not like America would miraculously be scandal free. ) -
Will the President Ever Shut Up About Kneeling in the NFL?
dpberr replied to donbb's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
He should shut up about it. The debate has run its course. -
I barely survived a GBS attack in 2001. Before we were able to stop it, it had paralyzed my legs and arms. For the last 17 years I've lived with its chronic cousin, CIDP. I was able to rehab back to where I live a normal life today but I have significant nerve damage in my feet, especially my toes. Without orthotics, I have significant foot drop in both feet. You have to stay reasonably fit to avoid muscle atrophy. Have to keep your muscles in good shape. The nearly two decades of drugs has taken a significant toll on my body (lost all my hair, have several food allergies, have weird proteins in my blood). According to my neurologist, I've had one of the better outcomes from it long term. Although the government and the medical community can't shake their head to the side hard enough, GBS attacked in the weeks after getting my one and only flu shot. I'm no anti-vaxer but those flu shots are dangerous. The flu won't do what GBS has done. The good news for Travis Frederick is modern medicine has made great gains in understanding and treating the condition. There are more doctors who know what they are talking about with GBS and CIDP and the front line medications are quite good (steroids, IVIG, plasma exchange, other chemotherapy agents). He also has age on his side too, along with hopefully good health insurance. If he caught it early, perhaps the damage can be contained. When you go to the support groups, you can tell that the younger ones do better than the older ones. The condition sucks but the drugs too, come with consequences. The bad news is his football career is more than likely over. You're never "fully" cured of GBS or CIDP and it usually attacks the parts of the body he needs (feet, hands) to play - the worst. Relapses are always possible and the medications to treat it aren't conducive to a career as a lineman in the NFL.

This movie only works if Michael Ironside *and* Tom Skeritt are in it. The obvious next step is a new Iron Eagle.

Molly Killed By Illegal Alien Per News Conference
dpberr replied to 3rdnlng's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
This story stunned me in a few ways: 1. Women still jog alone in 2018. 2. People in the United States still go to bed with their doors unlocked. To me that is a dangerous lack of self awareness and being aware of your surroundings. I don't think society rewards that faith in humanity any longer. -
Cohen's Plea Deal and its Implications for Trump
dpberr replied to Nanker's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
If Congress didn't impeach Clinton who allegedly committed his crimes while in office, I highly doubt they will impeach a President for allegedly crimes before assuming office. -
I have started and stopped this show several times over the course of its run. IMO, it's a show that lacks a coherent theme or identity. It's a weird hodge podge of Point Break, Ocean's 11 and Sons of Anarchy and they've made Ellen Barkin's character weirder every season.

Post Malone tireless Plane emergency landing
dpberr replied to Teddy KGB's topic in Off the Wall Archives
On a related note, if you're interested in the "anatomy" of an airplane crash, there is a guy (Allec Joshua Ibay) on YouTube that posts videos where he uses Microsoft Flight Simulator, transcripts and the FAA investigation to show why and how the crash occurred. Covers events from all decades simulating the event with the right plane, cockpit, flight controls. The most maddening ones are where stone-cold human negligence is the cause. ValuJet Flight 592 (where they loaded highly combustible oxygen containers in the cargo hold) and Alaska Airlines Flight 261 where the lack of lube and inspection of the rear stabilizer caused the crash come to mind. There's also quite a few incidents created by idiot pilots. The plane is a-ok but the inexperienced or in a rush pilot gets everyone killed. -
Why are people betting so much on the Browns this year?
dpberr replied to IgotBILLStopay's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
There is a larger than you'd think contingent of media and pundits that want to see Tyrod Taylor be successful and felt the Bills never gave him a chance. He happens to play for the Browns. (FWIW, I like Tyrod. I also think the Bills treated him fairly and gave him all the opportunity in the universe.) -
I think you need training and experience in calling games live to be good at it. Romo is the exception to the rule that you, as a former player, can just walk into the booth and be good at being a play by play analyst. ESPN is relying on everyone being patient while they train their personnel...on the job. ESPN lost its way a while ago. They are doing some things better recently. They quit the Michael Smith/Jemele Hill tire fire. They are allegedly bringing Berman back in for an expanded role. Olbermann is back and he's pretty good when he's not opining about politics. The E30 series with Jeremy Schapp is one of their long ignored strengths - the inside story on a sports topic.

Rob Ryan on Colin Cowherd today, a few interesting tidbits
dpberr replied to Estro's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I wish both Ryan brothers would just go away at this point but especially Rob. He's terrible at coaching and it's *always* somebody else's fault for his failures. Not once does this guy have a moment of self reflection. -
Khalil Mack holding out... in Buffalo
dpberr replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
As a long time Spurs fan, it's exactly what he deserves for his shenanigans. He's lucky there isn't an NBA franchise in Serbia. -
Sean McDermott is the most annoying kind of person.
dpberr replied to The Bills Blog's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
In a way what you find annoying is the NFL's requirement that coaches show up to these worthless press junkets, not the coaches themselves. Imagine being required to give a briefing to the newspaper after every Monday staff meeting or family dinner. -
Why does anyone retain security clearance upon leaving the government? I never understood why you could leave the employ of the federal government, yet still have a very valuable, very important benefit.

I think retired generals should conduct themselves like former POTUS try to do: You can speak your opinions in private, but never to the press, in a speech, etc. I just think it makes them look small when they do it. I hate the cottage industry of retired generals and former special forces/special operations parading around on television opining about everything. I know it's some easy money but It was cooler back in the day where you'd drag one one of these guys out of retirement to discuss tank strategy or the like.

If Mack pulls the "Kawhi Leonard", the Raiders lose a lot of leverage. -
Will Rex Ryan Ever Get Another Shot To Coach in The NFL?
dpberr replied to BuffaloRush's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
No. His laziness got him fired from three jobs. -
It appears from pictures that they had removed a substantial amount of concrete from a section of the deck to repair it. It's little wonder why it collapsed. The bridge was already in a compromised state.
