Playoff defense not just bad, next level awful
dpberr replied to Mikie2times's topic in The Stadium Wall
I don't think younger players on defense is necessarily a step back. I think the remodel needs to occur in the 2024 season so you have those younger players on the inexpensive contracts peaking for the first couple years in the new stadium. The Bills teams of stadium Years 1 and 2 have to be awesome. You don't want those years to be without legitimate Super Bowl potential. -
Playoff defense not just bad, next level awful
dpberr replied to Mikie2times's topic in The Stadium Wall
The Bills defense has good players, but no great ones. There's no Josh Allen there. It doesn't have a lot of quick players. It's older too. The age looms large because after 18+ games, the 30 year old body just doesn't have much left in the tank. When the season was shorter, vets had something left to give. If I were the Bills, I'd take my lumps this coming season and give rookies and 2nd year players starter minutes on defense and resist the temptation to give contracts to any FA who are 29+. That includes players like Rasul Douglas and Leonard Floyd. Older players will get you to the playoffs, but they aren't going to deliver those game changing moments come January. -
So will you be watching the Super Bowl this year or no?
dpberr replied to BillsPride12's topic in The Stadium Wall
I'll be bored watching it. Footballed out at this point, after months of watching games. Bored with the Chiefs and the Kelce experience. Tired of Tony Romo. Usher hasn't been relevant for over a decade. Five years from now, everyone will struggle remembering this game and who played in it. -
I like the hire. He will need to incorporate even more variety into his game plan next year.

IMO, if you want to be an NFL coordinator or coach, you need to spend your own money on the quality agent to represent you. As I've said many times over the years, Juan Castillo's agent belongs in the agent hall of fame. Whoever he or she is, they got that guy more jobs than he ever actually deserved. I think Todd Bowles hired the same person. 90% of the hires are because of pre-existing relationships. X knows Y, or worked with Z, or T vouches for... I don't feel bad for Thad Lewis. A good interview gets him that relationship. Perhaps a college calls up the Bills FO because they want to hire him as head coach. Or perhaps the Bills need a coach next year, and that interview impressed them.

If he coaches again, it'll be an interim position where a team underperforms in 2024 and he may pick up a few wins over 1.5 seasons using what they've got in house. (maybe Cowboys, Jags, Saints, Bucs) He's 72, and no team is going to invest in a 1-year coaching staff and no halfway decent coaches are going to sign up for a year just to get fired the following season. If he wants that wins record, he's going to have to compromise on the situation.

The WR#2 Market (Spotrac Breakdown and Comparison)
dpberr replied to WhitewalkerInPhilly's topic in The Stadium Wall
The answer is the draft or UFL. I'd spend zero FA dollars at this position. WR2 is a young man's game and the fundamental talent you're looking for is route running. You can find more Khalil Shakirs. You can hone that talent with professional instruction. -
He's going to be the Chargers DC if Harbaugh is hired. I'm sure this is the plan.

What realistic coaching changes do you expect?
dpberr replied to BigBadBills's topic in The Stadium Wall
For me, the question is who can move the team from the very good to great if you decide McDermott cannot do it. 72-year old Belichick isn't going to be around for the new stadium in 2026, and I think that's an important detail. I would not want to go from McDermott to Belichick to coach #3 in such a short span of time with a new stadium opening. I consider Harbaugh to be as much of a lottery ticket as any coordinator, just pricier. I think he'd have difficulty assembling an NFL-grade coaching staff. -

I think McDermott's seat is warmer than most fans would believe. However, there are no compelling coaches to go get. BB is too old, Gruden hasn't coached in a few years, any coordinator is a lottery ticket. You want this team to remain competitive in 2024 but again peak in 2025-2027. I expect Strength and Conditioning to *finally* get a makeover this year. I expect a Defensive Coordinator to be named. -

Divisional Playoffs - Chiefs at Bills - Post game thread
dpberr replied to BuffaloBill's topic in The Stadium Wall
This was "the" year. Now it's on to a reload for the new stadium. I'd expect some big changes. The hump has been identified. -

Leslie Fraizer Interviewing with Chargers
dpberr replied to 17islongenough's topic in The Stadium Wall
Leslie Frazier is not getting a head coaching job in the NFL, and it's nobody's fault but his. First of all, it's a young man's game. Second of all, he's had untold opportunities to show his head coaching acumen in college, the XFL, the USFL, the CFL, building a staff of coordinators and assistant coaches in his own tree, and he chose not to do it. He's soon to be 65 years old, and hasn't been a head coach in the NFL in over a decade. -

So, You are McDaniel and Dophins Management
dpberr replied to Rich Stadium Original's topic in The Stadium Wall
"Resting" uninjured players is a loser's mentality IMO. You play to win games. I also wouldn't want to be a coach that prevents a player from reaching a bonus or incentive. People will rush to say Bradley Chubb! Well, an ACL on the brink was going to tear inevitably, whether it was in that 4th quarter of the Ravens game or the 1st quarter of Sunday night's game. -
Will/Should Von be active vs. the Fish?
dpberr replied to EmotionallyUnstable's topic in The Stadium Wall
If Von Miller is active at the consequence of Linval Joseph not being active, no. I'd prefer having all of the DTs active for this game. -
The NFL has too many teams. LA, and California generally, have too many NFL teams. The Chargers seem like the perfect relocation team.

The conspiracy theorist in me thinks Hamlin was technically cleared to play football, but the team and NFL lawyers "strongly suggested" not to play him. Keeping him on an active roster is doing him a solid. Everyone, including the player, is in on "the" plan, so all parties get what they want. I suspect the Bills will release him next year, while paying his entire contract in full, and he'll retire.

The 2024 Thanks and Optimism Thread
dpberr replied to WhitewalkerInPhilly's topic in The Stadium Wall
I'm thankful for the contributions of free agents Latavius Murray, Linval Joseph, Rasul Douglass and Leonard Fournette. Murray took it upon himself to call a player's only meeting and runs hard everytime he gets an opportunity to play, and the defense has played more inspired and nasty since Joseph and Douglas came to the team. I don't think that's a coincidence. Fournette's contributions have yet to be written about, but I have a feeling he's going to impact a playoff game in a positive way. -

Where do you get to see the uniforms for the week like that? That's very interesting. -
He was washed when he was traded to the Broncos. Seahawks are excellent at knowing when "it's time." I also think Wilson believes his own press too much - he's not the hungry, humble guy who became the superstar QB. Hasn't been for some time.

I think the Bills have quietly benefited from some new voices in the locker room this year compared to last year, and even compared to earlier in the year. I think the additions of Linval Joseph, Rasul Douglas, Ty Johnson, and Taylor Rapp have added some energy and nasty. I don't think it is coincidence that the Bills defense started hitting harder and playing more aggressively after Douglas and Joseph arrived on scene.
