Free Agency News and Updates - around the league

Based on Marrone's stubbornness and the above Tweet from Ngakoue, this looks like another Leveon Bell situation developing. I just don't understand why teams do this. Even if it were the Bills and say, Tre or Milano (even though I don't think they'd do that), it doesn't make sense. Either give him the contract or let him go. Yes, that means you end up with nothing, but you knew that when you Drafted him. It's always a gamble and the team shouldn't get to hold the player prisoner just because they took him in the Draft. The team has had 4(ish) years to build a culture, put other players in place, work on relationship building with the team and coaches, and get a contract in place BEFORE he's set to walk and now the power play. Yes, I also know it's in the CBA so players voted for it - but honestly, I think the Franchise Tag was put in place as a good faith effort to allow a player to play, but still pay him what he's due per market value at his position while working on a long-term deal. Not so the GM/Coach can hold the player back from moving on if both parties can't agree. I just don't think it's the right thing to do. -
I've not been a fan of the "Bring AJ Green to the Bills" banner since it started earlier last season. I know he's gifted and in his prime he was great, but as it's been rehearsed ad nauseum here on the board, injuries and age just don't make it palatable in my mind. Cooper doesn't want to be in Buffalo and some of the other scheduled FAs look decent, but not "great". I think the Bills sign a couple mid-to-low level FAs (unless they trade for one) and Draft their most pressing skilled position of need in the 1st or 2nd round. I'm not a fan of 1st Round WRs, but this might be the year - IF Beane does everything else in FA. Here's Spotrac's list of WR FAs: https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/all/wide-receiver/
-
Maybe....maybe not. You're still talking about maybe 4 other WRs that go before him, then some QBs, DE / Edge guys....I don't know. At the bottom of Round 1 to the beginning of Round 2, would make the most sense IMO.

I love me some Jefferson....I think he could be this year's McLaurin.

Here's a list via Spotrac: https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/all/right-tackle/ Of these, a few that may come at a decent price should they make it to the market: Bulaga - Spotrac has his Market Value at $10 mill AAV Ifedi (Seattle) Darryl Williams - who is flying under the radar this year so far, as opposed to last year when folks on this board were ready to sacrifice their first born for him. Those are few intriguing names that won't be "cheap" but won't break the bank like Conklin, JMO -
I agree with Drafting their guy, but to learn behind Brady if I were Indy. Again, I know it's probably not happening, but I think they're closer than maybe you give them credit for...they beat the Titans (yes, it was with Mariotta) and the Chiefs (I think it was without Mahomes but can't recall) and put up some big points on lesser opponents and lost a close one to the Steelers. All in all, Brady and that Cap Space can do a lot for Indy. If I was Indy, I'd be convincing Brady we're spending all of that Cap money and they have two 2nd Round picks on top of it. Again, if Indy is committed - getting Brady would make a lot of sense for the team and that would include Drafting a QB to be mentored by Brady. JMO

I've said before, so I'll say it again, Colts make a ton of sense to me (which probably means it doesn't happen). Indy is indoors for 9 games a year (8 at home plus Houston), have a great Offensive Line, terrific Offensive HC, Mack and Hilton, along with the most Cap space in the league so they can afford $40 million per year for Brady and have more money for FA playmakers and the Draft. They're also in a winnable Division with his game play and team assets. If Brady were to go to Indy, AND they were to spend their money on a FA WR, TE, and maybe even get Gordon from the Chargers to give Brady another receiving threat plus a Defensive playmaker and Draft - they could be a very, very good team and Brady would play indoors most of the season.

I've said it before in other threads, but Beane and the rest of the Scouting Department and Front Office have revitalized my belief in this team. McDermott is a really good HC that is continuing to learn the larger perspective and I've seen some modest improvement in his coaching abilities since he arrived as well. The team culture, the ability to build and improve the young players, building systems that fit their personnel strengths and the overall management of the team is the best it's been since the Glory Years of the early 1990s. I trust - for the first time since then - that no matter my own personal opinion, Beane and his staff have a phenomenal plan to build the team and keep the players that need to be kept and allow the others to find a more suitable environment and team for them. That trust, is a warm, relaxing feeling I can't recall having about this team in over two decades.

I'm not a big fan of taking a WR in the 1st round, maybe ever - but especially this year. There will be guys in the 2nd and 3rd round that will out produce the guys in the 1st round and the talent is just as big a reason as opposed to other years when that's true, it's due to primarily where the WR goes (QB, scheme, etc.). People may not want to spend the 1st round pick on Defense, but make no mistake, this Defense needs another good OLB and as much as I like V. Joseph, right now he's a ST player that needs to grow. He can always evolve into a hybrid type of SS / LB to use but the Bills need a day 1 starting good OLB.

No thank you, pass. Levi Wallace as an UDFA and the Bills found gold, took T. Johnson in the 4th and he's been good to great at times. Let's continue to find guys who are either young and show promise or in their prime. For the money, I'd take Byron Jones from Dallas if he makes out of the Star.

Greg Olsen visiting Bills, Redskins, Seahawks

It's hard for many of us to understand, because we so often take the time we have with our family for granted. Spending quality time with your children is NEVER a poor investment and if you're a Dad by choice, it's the most incredible and rewarding time you'll ever spend. For a Pro, they have to be unparalleled in their focus and the amount of energy it takes to remain at a high level is staggering. Every time they go to practice, work out, watch film, spend time at the facility, travel, play, etc. is time they're investing in their career and I hope their life's passion. But it's also a reallocation of a finite resource: time. If he chooses to retire, good for him...seriously, I would applaud any parent, in any situation, that makes the difficult career decision against their own desires for the benefit of being present for their kids. -
I will respectfully disagree. I think when you look at where the team was at the time in terms of the Defense, what their needs were and what the market was at the time, it seemed on par to me. Also, he was not brought in to be Kyle Williams 2.0 whose biggest asset was rushing the passer from the inside. I'm not saying that Star is a premiere DT, I'm saying the Bills paid him according to the market value of what they needed at the time. He's done what he's been asked to do. If you think he should be doing something different, and I don't, then that's a coaching issue, not so much what they're paying him. IMHO I'm not really sure what that means...?? Unless you're implying that the Bills seem to think he didn't perform well? If that's your assertion I would suggest you're wrong. I think they saw the ability to save some money, be able to move on next year if they choose to and yet give him some guarantees so he doesn't have to be concerned about not seeing the money in his contract. IMO, it was a means to helping out both sides, but not because they didn't think he played according to their expectations. It sounds like you disagree, so - that's where I'll leave it.
-
You're right that he did get better towards the second half of the season. And really, I'm not a Hauschka hater - I appreciate what he's done in Buffalo, but I also don't want to get too sentimental about a player that might very well be more of a liability than an asset.
-
A few listed according to Spotrac - and not to say they all make it to FA: 1. Zuerlein 2. Fairburn 3. Koo - don’t think Atlanta should let him walk, he was excellent for them. JMO, as I think any of these three would be an improvement.
-
Maybe the +$1 million equals able to cut Hausch-money so they can spend it on a capable Kicker?? Without sacrificing Cap money to be used on the rest of the team.
-
This will make a number of people happy, but honestly I don't think Star underperformed the way some on this board believe. IMHO, he did his job the way he was asked to do it and in the manner the Defense was designed for him to play in it....but, good for the team.

2020 mock drafts/ fanspeak/ draft network
BigBuff423 replied to ScorpionZero's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Here's one where I targeted WR in the 1st Round, something I personally wouldn't do...but I do love me some Jefferson (2/11/20): 22. Justin Jefferson - WR, LSU 54. Jonathan Taylor - RB, Wisconsin 86.Thaddeus Moss - TE, LSU 118. Bryan Edwards - WR, South Carolina 137. Davon Hamilton - IDL, Ohio State 149. Shaquille Quarterman - LB, Miami 168. Reggie Floyd - S, Virginia Tech 181. Michael Divinity Jr. - EDGE, LSU 187. Levonta Taylor - CB, Florida State -
I think the smartest place to go outside of NE is Indy. Indoors, with Hilton and Mack, one of the best Offensive lines in the NFL, Reich as the HC and a metric poon ton of money to spend on another WR / TE and Defensive players while in a city that eats and breathes football. It has the money, talent, coaches, stadium and location a QB of his age and career stage could want. It also allows Indy to be good while Drafting a QB and giving them a year or two to learn behind arguably the NFL's greatest QB of all time. Makes so much sense and due to the Cap situation, they can pay him as he demands.

No, the Bills / Pegulas need to build a dome if they want to continue to improve their brand and make the necessary jump toward the future in the NFL. On the one hand, fans can't / shouldn't clamor for a contemporary NFL Offense and then on the other hand complain when the team doesn't do everything it must to help move the team toward the current NFL trends. Buffalo is unlike virtually every other city EXCEPT: Indy, Minnesota, Detroit and Green Bay in the amount of snow they get during the season. Three of those four have domes. Green Bay probably would have had one but it IS the birthplace of the most legendary coach in the game and that's like tearing down the House that Ruth Built. Even then, eventually the Yankees knew they had to upgrade and replace the stadium. Buffalo Bills need a dome. Period. Fan experience, tv contracts, even Minnesota hosted a Super Bowl after their new stadium was built, indoor conditions are better for today's NFL, and it puts the team on the literal map again as they're getting better and better with Beane and McD. Time to get it done.
