  1. There are a lot more black coaches who got their jobs after the Rooney rule. Hard to argue with that. Tomlin, Dungy, Smith, and the Colts coach seem like pretty good choices, while Singletary and others have not cut the mustard. Pretty much the same situation as white coaches. Seems to me that the rule has been effective.
  2. Trading down is not necessarily a bad idea. With our needs filling two of them, an OT and a Defensive Lineman or two and an OLB would be much more possible with an extra second or third pick. If we are looking to improve quickle, this may be the way to go. I guess we should be careful to see if there is a player at a critical position of need who would qualify as a franchise player at 3 before we consider trading down though.
  3. The lessons to be taken away from this game is that we only have one viable quarterback on the team, that our offensive line needs a lot of work, that we still cannot stop run. Lots of personnel actions have to take place to begin rebuilding this team. Chan has (perhaps) earned a chance to come back next year but he'd better be showing something really good by the opening of the regular season.
  4. I guess an 8-8 season would be an improvement. It was obvious that our failure to trade or go for free agents (Vick, Faneca, Flozell Adams) were big mistakes. spiller, as good as he may someday be, wasn't anywhere near as much help this year as Bulaga would have been. Letting Incognito go was a brain fart...but on the positive side we seem to be developing with younger players and through the draft...I'm not a big fan of that strategy (developing them to take advantage of free agency)but I was impressed with the way the Bills played after the break and am ready to back off my wish that Gailey be fired. I'm okay with him for one year, but I expect some good personnel moves in the off season.
  5. I think he made them up...called a "straw man" argument in some circles.
  6. quarterbacks don't necessarily lead to more wins. Defensive linemen don't leas to more wins....Face it...a strong defense and a strong offense leads to more wins. Our biggest weakness is an inability to stop the run game and our second biggest weakness is an an inability to establish an effective pass blocking and running game. Defensive and offensive line is what has to be impoved to win games.
  7. maybe that alosi guy can take the blame for this....or... "Coach Ryan said to get the inactive on the sideline with their lovely feet as close as possible to the field....."
  8. of course teams pay based on what you mean to them. That's the whole point isn't it?
  9. in my running days I ran from crystal city by the pentagon over to the mall and back. Nice run. Try the Dubliner near Union Station for good Irish food, good Irish music and a surprising number of Buffalonian transplants.
  10. Officer..he was wearing a pats hoodie and looked kind of grim....
  11. okay..okay...can we all make "Jets FOOTball" signs for the last game? Are we going to ask Rex in the pregame about his kickers? Don't "tiptoe" around the issue! The Jets are just going to have to toe the line on this and understand that these are the times that try men's soles...and apparently the soles of their better halves as well.
  12. foot fetish? Let's accomodate Rex and put our foot up his butt at the last game of the season. I don't quite understand the foot fetish thing either.
  13. I was a fan of Fewell for head coach at the time, and think he will be a head coach in the NFL shortly. I also was NOT by any means a fan of Chan at the time of his hire, through the draft and through the first part of the season. Since the break, however, I have been more and more impressed with his leadership, his personnel moves seem to be paying off, and he has really begun to win me over. Asking me today? I think Chan is the better choice of the two based on what I'm seeing as the team progresses every week. I want to see what happens with the draft and personnel moves in the off season but on the whole I'd grade Chan as a more than passing grade for the first year.
  14. key to beating new england? 1. keep Brady on the bench. Lots of running plays to Jackson and McIntyre, spelled by Spiller. More than anything else this game will be won or lost based on time of possession. They are averaging about 32 points of offense per game. Limit their opportunities. 2. Make them work for their points. Take away the deep threat and use the nicke defense if you have to. 3. Occassional trick plays. That hasn't been Gailey's style and it may not be expected. An onside kick or fake punt or fake field goal can give us an "unearned" possession.
  15. you know a great tight end pick up in free agency would add a LOT to this offense, and it seems like a number of good ones will be available in free agency.
  16. Spiller hasn't proven anything yet. Potential won't even get you cheap coffee at McDonald's. When he produces he'll get kudos, but I'm waiting to see what he's worth. As I said before...he's a bust until he's not a bust. I'll be happy if gets over 100 yards a game in the next two games or if he produces a very good season next year...but being a 9 pick and highly paid doesn't cut the mustard.
  17. I like your thinking. Football players play for money and if the money is there they will play in Buffalo. Gailey is earning a lot of respect and the gutsy play this last few games might make us more and more attractive. I think we could fill a few holes in the offensive line and especially looking for a tight end in free agency. The team is not ONLY built through the draft. Welcome to the wall!
  18. The team has really come a long way since the break. I tend to agree that at this point we probably need a stud linebacker or defensive lineman as pick one. I suspect an offensive tackle as the second pick and I'm going to keep pushing for my tennessee homeboy Luke Stocker the tight end as a third rounder. The last one I pushed for as a second or third rounder was a Tennessee boy, Jason Whitten..and he's done okay.
  19. Keep YOUR offense on the field as much as possible. Slow down the game, heavy duty running, Consider going with two tight ends for a good part of the game and use the fullback and jackson to fight for first downs. The Pats will make adjustments which will open up the pass game as the game progresses. Brady is nothing special when he is on the sidelines. Defense? I guess if we had a killer pass rush that would be the best option, but in the absence of that I would take away the run and be more aggressive on the turnover. Mix up packages using nickel defense on an "irregular" regular basis and go for the interception. I think we have not under Gailey been ones to emphasize trick plays, which would lead me to think we might be able to steal a possession or score usingone in this game. One, we're not going to the playoffs, Two they are really neat to see on TV, and three successful ones pyss Belichick off to no end.
  20. I thought q nine win season was not out of the question, but was horrified with the team before the break. I am MORE than impressed with play since the break. I think a win against the Jets would be a real statement going into next year and bloodying Tom Brady's nose would make my off season terrific!
  21. why is this the first thing I read on Mondays? Always on point and constructive. Good job Bill.
  22. hey...Al Q reads these boards...probably in Pakistan someone is running into OBL's little hut and saying "HEY...I GOT AN IDEA FROM TBD...Let's BLOW UP A STADIUM!!"
