  1. my son ran a restaurant outside Saratoga and was always calling me with guys who had come in for d drink and I got a kick out of talking with a couple of guys from The Sopranos, David Cassidy from the Partridge family, Doug Flutie, etc. The most "celebrity" call he hit me with was Bill Parcells who apparently is a bit of a horse fan and owns a place. Nothing special as to the conversation, just seemed pleasant enough. I still blame him for our losing our first superbowl...but I was polite.
  2. Maybe the best pass blocking running back to ever play the game. Couple that with his records as a running back, his ability to catch passes, and his punting and kicking ability, and I would definitely say he was one of the four or five best football players in the history of the Buffalo Bills. I watched him and I watched Jim Brown (before the Bills Cleveland was the closest thing to a "Buffalo" team, and I gotta say Cookie is the ONLY runninng back who belongs in the same sentence with Jim Brown. If there is a Buffalo Bill who belongs in the hall of fame but isn't...its Cookie Gilchrist.
  3. It is a consideration, but trading lower into the first round might be a little more palatable. I think there may be super impact players in this draft and we may be in line for a truly great defensive lineman. On the other hand your point is really something to consider if we trade down and get three players who are an immediate impact, a really terrific outside linebacker an offensive tackle and a defensive lineman for instance. This is what the front office gets the big bucks for and I think they have a ton of evaluation to do before making this decision. Trading down is a real possibility.
  4. I want to publicly apologize for criticizing the trade of Marshawn Lynch. I said the "beast mode" was something we lacked, argued that the power running game kept offenses off the field and that we traded away an essential power back...but I was wrong. The draft pick we go for him will surely get us through the playoffs and get us our superbowl.
  5. Best player available..but in a position of need. Hell we haven't done that in years...so why start now. If we had we would have Haloti Nagota, Orakpo and Bulaga instead of Spiller Maybin and Whitner. Anyway...there is an opportunity to get the best defensive lineman in the draft or the best outside linebacker in the draft or the best offensive tackle in the draft. Givewn that we could start a defensive end or tackle and there are only two teams ahead of us I would say we Can't screw this up. I would say that except we have a history of screwing this up.
  6. I was at the Canadian Ballet late one night and the lap dancer twisted her ankle and was in a lot of pain. A guy comes over and manipulates her leg a little bit and she gets up and continues her dance. Much to my shock it was none other than Abramowki himself!! He said he often came to the ballet as a consultant and pointed out that the girls were magnificent athletes. The announcer called out the next girl who danced to a song rendered on a karaoke machine by a guy who looked familiar. I walked up to the stage and there he was....Hank Bullogh!
  7. Interesting read. It seems the 3-4 doesn't work all that well without 3-4 personnel. If we are committed to it we have to be looking for a different breed of cat at DE and probably a killer NT, and some linebackers who can play the position. Lots of movement on personnel is in the offing if we are going to improve the defense for a lot of the reeasons you put forth.
  8. Sounds like an old guy being threatened by a youngster and behaving like a jerk. He should have been fired on the spot...which he apparently was.
  9. Two of us were hitchhiking out to the lake with my high school footbal jersey on in the summer of 1965. Elbert Dubenion (Golden Wheels) pulls up in a cadillac convertible and gives us a ride. He kidded me about having the same number as Cookie Gilchrist (34). Nice guy and one of my all time favorite receivers. I would rank him, Glenn Bass and Ernie Warlick as one of the best receiver corps we ever had.
  10. Said it before...saying it again...Fewell will be an NFL head coach.
  11. 1. Be aggressive in Free Agency. find a solid offensive tackle, a quality tight end (Bo Scaife?) and/or a good run stuffing defensive lineman. 2. Draft for the trenches. A quality run-blocking front line will open up holes that will make both Spiller and Jackson more effective, eat time of possession and free up the passing game. 3. Sign existing free agents. You are not going to draft a better safety than Donte Whitner or a linebacker better than PP. Get er done. 4. Take the number one player available in a position of need with the third choice. Assuming the number one and two choices are on point that leaves a number of choices in positions of need. Chan..not running back....qb, de, dt, ot, olb...YOU CAN'T POSSIBLY MISS ON THIS ONE. 5. Frankly given our draft position on two we should go into the third round with two penciled in starters on the board. 5. Set a goal of getting to the playoffs and pump it with a trumpet. If you have low expectations you get low results (e.g., the 2010 Buffalo Bills.) one more thing...if we don't get Scaife, go for Luke Stocker TE out of Tennessee. This from a homer, but the same homer pushing for us to draft Jason Whitten in the second round and he has turned out pretty well.
  12. Well for a time there it looked like we were in discussions for Vick or McNabb. I love Fitz but am almost certain Vick would have been a better qb for us this year. I can't imagine anyone sane disagreeing with this conclusion. McNabb? I don't have a clue what has been going on in Washington, but I just don't see him doing much better than Fitz.
  13. I don't really watch the AFC west all that much but it looked like Cable had the team really coming around. I am very surprised although the pundits seemed to have him on the list of coaches in trouble.
  14. Ahhhh...and this is why we are in the playoffs? Face it...if we were this talented we should fire the coach for the record we have. The talent is NOT there and Gailey did a pretty good game day job with a very uninspiring talent pool. We have a long way to go to get better and we have to do it with good free agent signings, inspired trading, and a very good draft.
  15. Nope...but in this business the trick is to offer more $$$$ snd point out that he would probably be the premier receiver and have Chan meet with him and let him know he will be a major role player in reshaping the offense, and point out how we have addressed the O-line issues in free agency and the draft and we expect him to be in the pro-bowl when he comes here. It ain't rocket surgery
  16. unlikely, but if Luck falls to three I say go for him. We have lots of needs but he would be a steal and we only have ONE qb on the roster for next year. We can address the o-line and d-line in rounds 2, 3 and 4. Either that or 3 would suddenly become an EXTREMELY valuable trade down item and we might pick up another two and a one for next year from a team hungry enough. It would be a wonderful spot to be put in.
  17. yup..we have to draft a db somewhere in the mix but probably not in the first two rounds. Free agency is looking good. I watched Lawyer Milloy playing for the seahawks, saw Antoine Winfield strip the ball last week, and it seems Jim Leonard and Nate Clements are doing just fine where they are playing. We gotta get on the receiving end of the free agency situation. If we had been active in free agency and available trades last year? We'd have opened the season with Michael Vick at QB, Flozell Adams at tackle, Faneca at gaurd (along with Incognito who we would have actually kept) and been a lot better. Free agency and trades are part of the mix. The Bills superbowl teams relied on good drafts (Smith, Kelly, Thomas Reed) but also on wise trades and free agency....Tasker, Lofton, Biscuit, etc.
  18. upside of coming here...hmmmm...oh yeah....$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$!
  19. The offensive line is the weakest spot on the third weakest team in football. We can argue "who sucks least" on the line til the cows come home, but the bottom line is we are picking third in the draft for a reason. The most critical position on the line is left tackle and Bell was not good enough to start in that position. We need starters and depth on both the offensive and defensive line. I didn't see Bell getting a bag of votes for the pro bowl.
  20. Who is most serviceable? There are maybe two (wood and levitre) "serviceable offensive linemen and the tackles and tight ends are non-descript. To go into the next season we can live with Fitz, who has proven to be true NFL quarterback, and we have two true running backs (well..one in Jackson and I don't have any idea what Spiller might do with good run blocking) who are crippled by poor offensive line play. Gotta fix that line first and then evaluate what we have at qb and receiver.
  21. It would have improved greatly with a good offensive line and a defensive front seven that could have gotten opposing offenses off the field. Luck, Newton or Peyton Freaking Manning would have the same problems. For the sixth or seventh year now I'm saying it...start with the trenches!
  22. Gee.I gave up booze eight years ago. Don't miss it at all...
