We have real weaknesses on the defensive and offensive lines and we could certainly use an upgrade of receivers (after losing Hogan, Watkins, Woods, Goodwin) I think we might might draft a qb if available at 21 but giving up a passle of draft picks to move up doesn't seem to be the best way to go. In any event this isn't the John Elway, Jim Kelly, Dan Marino class of qb's.

Bills Hire Sean McDermott as New Head Coach

Figures A guy whose defenses routinely finish out of playoff quality. A guy whose reams don't go to the playoffs. Maybe he will learn something about winning as a Bills coach😉 -
McDermott emerging as favorite in coaching search...

My mistake. McDermott may have great qualities but not the winning background (eagles and Panthers). I would like to see candidates from teams such as Green Bay Seattle or even the hated Patriots. Winners win and losers lose. -

There is certainly an advantage to taking a coach who is working in a winning program. They usually have played a role in the winning record. They have had the guidance of a quality head coach. They are steeped in a winning culture . McDermott has that pedigree. Lynn has OC experience as a Bills coach and has spent years in a Rex Ryan culture. -
I think he is going to be a great one, but I suspect we will not be able to put together a package attractive enough to get him. Nothing wrong with trying though!

Successful HC are not neccessarily developers of QB's
tennesseeboy replied to gjv001's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Well. Didn't Vince Lombardi develop Bart Starr who did nothing without him? Chuck Noll and Terry Bradshaw? Bill Walsh and third round pick joe Montana ? Pete Carol develop RussellWilson? Head coaches pick them and develop them. Al Davis and Jim Plunkett (and second stringer Darryl Lamonica took them to the Super Bowl )? I do hope the next coach knows enough to build a staff and work with what is available by the draft free agency or trade or better yet by coaching the talent we have From the slim pickings available at the moment he would be wise to start next season with Taylor and Jones and to dump EJ -
New Chenelly Tweet - Coughlin an option
tennesseeboy replied to Reed83HOF's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The problem is still there and I don't see any coach who has options taking this job. Whaley has been a coach killer and has been a nightmare at hiring coaches. He wants Lynn (one tear as OC and running backs coach experience on losing teams. He will not resist whalers meddling. No you won't see a competitive coach walking into this snake pit -
I gotta go with keeping him if he finishes at 8-8 or above. Shaq and Ragland being out and Watkins injury as well as the time missed by Darius made me lower my playoff expectations. I would really expect a coach to get three or four years unless he craps the bed (2-14 for instance).

Horrible Scenario For 2017......
tennesseeboy replied to Bill from NYC's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think a lot of the overpaid contracts should be renegotiated or the overpaid players should be let go. I'm not seeing any hall of fame players on the roster. I'm not even seeing any pro-bowl caliber players. Shady comes closest but like you said, he has lots of miles and isn't getting younger. I watched this game and at this point in the season I've got to go where I don't want to go. This isn't a very good team and is not playoff ready. 8-8 is the best these guys can live up to. I can't understand why Whaley isn't on the hot seat as well as Ryan. Maybe when Lawson and Ragland get back the defense will improve, but I just don't see much happening that gives me much optimism. -
Greg Gabriel - Slams the Bills
tennesseeboy replied to Reed83HOF's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The Bills played horrid offense in game 1 and horrid defense in game 2. I think the offense appears to be legitimately weak with a poor offensive line and not much in the running game. HOWEVER, it isn't the worse team we have ever had, not even the worst team we have had since our last playoff game. When Dareus and maybe Shaq get into the lineup we should be somewhat better and we have two offensive tackle out of play right not who should get back. No playoffs on the horizon but probably a 7 or 8 win season. That being said I don't think seven or eight wins are going to be enough to justify keeping either Ryan and probably not enough to keep Whaley. I understand the "snake bit" by injury excuse, but it always is there and other teams (such as the hated Patriots) seem to overcome the injury bug and suspension bug. Ryan's game day clock management, use of challenges and timeouts, and tolerance for really stupid penalties are not showing any sign of improvement. -
I may be wrong but wasn't the fullback we received for Gilchrist Billy Joe? He sounds a lot like your description of Gregory though. I think the most underrated of that era given his HUGE role in the AFC championships was tight end Ernie Warlick. The most underrated player on defense was cornerback Robert James. He did make three pro bowls but I think the quality of his play was hall of fame worthy had he been on another team. Overrated HAS to be Rob Johnson. Defensively I would go with Shane Nelson.

I think firing Whaley and bringing in a person with authority to rule all team matters with an iron fist and to keep Rex in line is for the best.

I appreciate that you found so much good in the season. I find that the bads outweigh the goods. Coaching was a nightmare, based on the record, the dumb penalties game after game, the backup qb situation, and the deterioration of the defense. I guess the only real positive I see is that the starter, Tyrod may be the real deal. For what seems to be the tenth year I am going to say we get nowhere without a first rate offensive line and our first priority in the draft had better be to shore it up. I'm not all that sure about the defensive line either but that and the linebacking corps should take up our draft and free agency moves in the next year. Keep the coach? I don't know. He came in promising a playoff berth and has pretty much given us the shipwreck that his haters predicted. The record isn't just attributable to injuries but also to poor coaching and lousy discipline. I was really hoping Ryan was the guy to get the team to the next level. Whaley has not been any great shakes in his tenure and it might not be a bad idea to clean house. What a mess.
