  1. That makes me angry. So what they got a QB in FA I bet we finish better than the Raiders

In addition to the quarterback addition, they get to play two weak divisions this season - the NFC West, and of course their own division the AFC West.

I'd take you up on that bet. How much?

Instead of ripping the guy how about trying to state how he is wrong? Oh thats right, no one can because he is dead on.

First time I've ever agreed with this guy.

  2. Wait…I'm confused. Isn't Chad Jackson then playing the part of James Hardy?

It was intended to be just a facetious remark, but I referred to it as the Chad Jackson role because he was Chad Jackson for the Pats before James Hardy was James Hardy for the Bills (A similar role; lesser version of the Troy Williamson role). So now Chad Jackson continues the same role for the Bills as he did with the Pats - an underachiever that teases you with talent but doesn't produce or can't get on the field. I'd rather give Hardy a chance simply because I prefer receivers with size but if he doesn't have it, then he doesn't have it.

  3.

-- Wilson gets quoted as saying he "did not recognize the names of any other GM candidates".

-- Allegedly no "big name" coaches were interested

-- Allegedly some "up and coming" coaches turned down interviews

-- Allegedly we did not interview some of the "best and brightest" that were available

-- Nix counters with a statement that his phone is ringing off the hook with interest

-- We did not draft a QB and we need one

-- We did not draft a LT and we need one

-- We drafted a RB and we do not need one

-- We are changing defenses and we don't have the personnel to run it

-- The economy is bad, there is nothing to do, and it snows a lot.

The pessimists/realists complain about these legitimate concerns whereas the optimists/"we're going to surprise everybody this season" group complain about the "anti-buffalo" media pointing out these legitimate concerns and subsequently create one of these identical threads every day.

True dat. Paraphrasing ... We suck until we prove otherwise.

That, at least, is one thing we should all be able to agree on.

  4. From what Gailey said, it sounds like he wouldn't miss much past the start of the season. He showed promise in the first preseason game and has good physical tools. I just hope he doesn't get cut from the team because of the injury keeping him out of the receiver competition.

  5. At least he sounds like HE GETS IT. He said what we all think here. We just made too many mistakes in our draft selections the past seven years to be a good team.

Fixed to show what he was really thinking. That's something he can't fix by the time this seasons starts.

Also, I don't think people know the actual definition of the word "troll".

  6. The time to do that was in the off season and the draft!

...or the offseason last year. The countdown began immediately after Jason Peters was traded. Two years later and we're still waiting for any quality, or even depth, at either tackle position. I felt sick when I saw Kirk Chambers starting at tackle Friday. I realize it was only due to injuries to Bell and Green but neither of them would be starting on a decent team either.

There was no semblance of a pass rush nor pass protection. The Bills were dominated on both lines by the powerhouse Washington Redskins. It was only one preseason game so I'm holding off the "cut everyone and forfeit the season" talk but really...they need to start looking like a competent NFL team by the team the season starts. I have no expectations for the season but any signs of improvement would be appreciated. It feels like the next years draft is all I ever look forward to with this team.

  7. Some people think the only way to get a high draft pick is to do terrible this year, we can always trade down. Also, under no circumstances can you predict if a QB is gonna be a franchise QB. I think 2011 is gonna be a repeat of 1998. Luck/Locker = Manning/Leaf. There were alot of people you swore Leaf would be better then Manning.

What? Did you mean to say "trade up" rather than "trade down"? How do you obtain a higher draft pick by trading down? Although there is a high bust rate when drafting a quarterback (at any draft position), it's better to draft as high as possible even if only due to the simple fact that you can evaluate and choose to draft whichever quarterback you want. The Chargers simply chose poorly and Polian chose wisely.

A rookie salary scale is likely to be in place by 2011. Missing on a quarterback in the top 5 won't destroy a franchise for the next 5 years like it has in the past. It's still risky but the downside won't be as low. I'd rather draft as high as possible next season. Aim high by aiming low this season.

    Superman does good.

    We can do well.

Indeed. However, I think you may have confused him.

  8. I'll put it this way - I'd much sooner put down $100 on one number of a 120 number roulette wheel than put a single dollar on the Bills winning the super bowl this season.

In reality, the odds of a super bowl victory for Buffalo in 2010 are closer to the suggested many thousands to one. There will still be plenty of people willing to donate $20 to the cause (enough people to allow Vegas to make a hefty profit). With that amount of money, it feels like there's nothing to lose and much to gain but really it's just throwing $20 down the toilet. That's how Vegas works.

If you're going to bet on a team to win it all, you're better off choosing a team with a good chance to do so no matter what the odds Vegas gives them. You still must weigh in risk versus reward due to the odds but choose a quality team.

  9. I suppose I agree with Buffalo's list because Spiller should be their best fantasy player, but I don't expect him to get enough touches to be considered a "stud". Maybe he'll get a lot of dunk offs for PPR leagues. Evans has always been a fantasy tease that doesn't deliver due to the quarterbacks and offensive line.

Jermichael Finley has been on my sleeper list since I picked him up midway through last season. Green Bay has a prolific passing offense and Finley is a big target in the endzone and can run after the catch as well. Between him and Celek (104 yds/g when Kolb was the quarterback) whomever is listed lower on the draft list, I plan on drafting.

  10. This is an easy one: Rob Johnson all the way. If you gave him time in the pocket, he could and did eat defenses alive. His career stats are 7.2 yards per pass attempt, a QB rating of 83.6, and 30 TDs to 23 INTs (a 1.3 to 1 ratio). By way of contrast, Jim Kelly had 7.4 yards per pass attempt, a QB rating of 84.4, and 237 TDs to 175 INTs (a 1.4 to 1 ratio).

Rob Johnson's downfall was that he took too much time to throw, and therefore took too many sacks. But if you put him on a Super Bowl caliber team (presumably with a first-rate offensive line), then most of those sacks, hits, and injuries don't happen. (The line he had in Buffalo was third-rate, as one generally expects from post-Super Bowl era Bills teams.)

Rob Johnson is #1 on this list, because he's the guy most able to benefit from good offensive line play. Back when he had Tony Boselli blocking his left side (with the Jaguars), he looked like the guy at QB.

#2 on the list would probably be Todd Collins, if only by default. He has decent career stats--6.6 yards per pass attempt, a QB rating of 76.0, and a TD/INT ratio of 1.2. Trent Dilfer's career stats are 6.5 yards per pass attempt, a QB rating of 70.2, and a TD/INT ratio of 0.9. Todd Collins could have been someone's Trent Dilfer.

Third on the list is Trent Edwards; who has the skill set to be a good backup QB. Unfortunately, he is deeply flawed, as others on this thread have mentioned.

Fourth is Alex van Pelt. He played with a lot of heart, but didn't have the talent to back it up. He'd sometimes give you more than you'd expect, just based on his understanding of the game. But it's hard to imagine him having a sparkling career as an NFL QB under almost any circumstances.

Last is Losman, who had all the physical tools one would hope for from a QB. Of all the QBs on this list, only Rob Johnson had comparable physical traits. But Losman lacked Johnson's accuracy and his touch on throws. Moreover, Losman's understanding of the game was by far the weakest of any of the QBs on this list. A quarterback with a million dollar body and a ten cent brain is destined to fail even under positive circumstances, as Kordell Stewart found in Pittsburgh. (Incidentally, the same GM who chose Kordell also chose you know who.)

Nice breakdown on all accounts. I also believe Rob Johnson could have been good behind a terrific offensive line. He just held on to the ball too long. The poll results thus far have things backwards.

  11. I've said before and will say again, the media treats us like we've gone 3-13 four years in a row, instead of three years of 7-9 followed by a 6-10

The media treats us (Bills fans) fine. Don't take it personally when analysts predict the Bills to be bad this season. They are not insultingly off base with that prediction.

if they are predicted dead last wouldnt they be surprising some people by default?

    31/32 chance to "surprise".

  12. Question for the blind on this board. HAS THERE BEEN ONE, JUST ONE PERSON IN THE MEDIA WHO'S SUPPORTED THE BILLS OFFESEASON/NIX/GAILEY?

Nope, but that's only because every single one of them are worthless morons that aren't fit to state their opinion even though that is exactly what they are paid to do. They are obviously Buffalo haters or don't know anything about our team. :wallbash:

No one ripped his rating because like all ratings from 'analysts', they are irrelevant.

The actual number rankings are meaningless, but the assessments of the Bills off-season have been accurate.

  13. I'm strongly in favor of Trent Edwards for the simple reason that it will result in DarthIce going crazy. After he is committed to an institution without being allowed to have any electronic gadgets he won't be able to rant about the kitty or other qb nonsense he constantly fulminates about. :worthy:

Nah he'll quickly change his mind and rationalize the decision into something positive. He did the same thing after his choice of coach that he lauded, Frazier, wasn't hired (He suddenly became the boards biggest Chan fan), and when a quarterback wasn't drafted this year until the 7th round despite his twenty threads about how important quarterbacks are.

  14. Why hasn't Baltimore been able to trade Gaither for a 2nd round draft choice? There are certainly a number of teams that need a LT.

How do you know their asking price is only a 2nd round draft choice with nothing additional required?

If the Ravens choose to hold onto Gaither this season, the Bills should make a serious run at him in free agency next year. He's worth the money and it'd be one less position we'd need to use a draft pick on.

  15. That statistic appears to show which offensive lines were bad, rather than which running backs were good. Running backs with bad offensive lines get hit right away in the backfield and therefore will have more yards after contact. Just look at the teams of the top 10 rbs and bottom 5 rbs in that category in the profootballfocus link. Fans that like to credit the Bills offensive line for their "good run blocking" last season should take note.

  16. I think that has just as much to do with the fact that franchises have invested a lot of time, money, and a first round pick in these players. Therefore, they are proportionately more likely to be named the starter even if their success on the field might not dictate that they should be.

That's true. But from the list of starters, the only 1st rounders starting that haven't earned the spot and are playing more by default or due to the investment would be Matt Leinert and Alex Smith. Stafford and Freeman fit under the category of unknown ability. That still leaves largely first rounders starting.

  17. Remind me again why the Bills didn't give that kind of money to their pro bowl tackle, and instead dispatched him to Philly for draft picks?

Because Russ Brandon and Ralph Wilson should not have been making personnel decisions? This is a new regime that hopefully understands the value and going rate of quality left tackles. Ralph remains but hopefully has learned from his mistakes.
