I agree completely. They need reinforcements in a lot of areas for this year and next, find the best players they can at each pick with obvious preference for need, but with needs at WR, DE, CB, DT (Oliver backup and to replace Daquan Jones in 25) and S.
-
I don’t want Walker at all before the 4th and not crazy about Franklin, either. FWIW, Daniel Jeremiah’s final rankings has Franklin 76th.
-
I think this is a mini-rebuild - of course they will not say that publicly. I want a Wr in the first or early 2nd too, but to be fair, Diggs wasn’t even considered a 2nd or 3rd tier WR in his draft. Again, not advocating to wait and certainly not to wait for WR because of Marshawn Kneeland.
-
There apparently is a lot of buzz on Kneeland being a borderline late 1st early 2nd player among league guys. I don’t see it - wouldn’t even use pick 60 on him. It’s pure projection of his size and athleticism, apparently, because he didn’t exactly dominate the MAC.
-
I would hate this trade. 2 1sts and 2 2nds for one non-QB? No thank you.
-
That would be grounds for firing Beane. I watched the one game that I could find for Kneeland and other than him being big, I saw nothing encouraging- and that was against Bowling Green and their overweight OT. Did the Bills hire Bill Belichick as GM when we were not looking?
-
That would prevent the team from addressing a number of very real needs and I don’t think that is a balanced approach to team building. Pick any receiver in the NFL right now, trade that haul for him and it still doesn’t make this roster for sure a SB team.
-
I think the bigger concern is effort and whether he is willing to take coaching. The rumors about Mitchell are concerning, but we don’t know if they are true. I trust that the Bills have done a ton of research on these receivers.
-
I love McConkey, worry about injury at his size, but I could be pretty happy if he is the pick - but I don’t think he solves the need for a deep target, in spite of his 4.39 40. He and maybe Legette, now we’re cooking, but that’ll cost to pull off.

I don’t know why the Chargers would want to trade Herbert - dude can play. Maybe Harbaugh wants McCarthy?

Lance Zierlein: Bills should draft 2 WR in the first 3 rounds

28 isn’t that appealing either if the sole aim is WR. Assuming that the smoke around Mitchell as not taking coaching well is true, they won’t take him. They can find a good complementary WR there, but probably not a guy who is the “go to”. I don’t understand the apparent interest in Troy Franklin, but at least he is a deep threat. I am a little leery of Legette, but I think I would prefer him over Franklin. -
Will we be in Super Bowl contention this year?

I know this opinion is unpopular and for sure I could be wrong, but I think pass rush will be a big problem. I don’t expect much from Von Miller - he could prove this wrong but he didn’t look like a pass rush threat last year and he is what 35? I like Epenesa and he has shown some promise the past 2 years, but he seems best as a rotational player. The top (only?) backup at CB is Kaiir Elam whom the coaches have shown no confidence in. There really isn’t any depth at S, either and we’ll have to see what the starters look like. Finally, they need a 3T to backup Oliver. I just see a lot of needs on D, that’s the main reason that I am not in favor of trading next year’s picks in a big move up for a WR this year. Maybe they will be competitive, but I think there are going to be some struggles this year. But I think next year with a full complement of picks plus an extra 2nd and at least modest cap room, I think they are primed to be in good shape for 25. -
Man, I think you’re right about Kinchens and I am not crazy about that. His Combine was really poor (by NFL standards) with 4.65 40 and 35” vert. Supposedly he ran 4.57 with 35” vertical at his pro day. I know that there is more to playing S than pure athletic ability, but he was flat awful at the Combine.

Lance Zierlein: Bills should draft 2 WR in the first 3 rounds
OldTimer1960 replied to Beck Water's topic in The Stadium Wall
I guess what I was trying to say is they have needs at WR, DE, DT, CB, S and they aren’t going to be able to fills those all this draft (discounting the idea that 5th, 6th and 7th round picks are likely to be real answers). Given that hand, I agree that 1 WR is a must. Especially since I don’t think they will find a decent DE prospect at 60, I would be open to BPA at any of those positions- even if that meant a 2nd WR. I’m not saying that they must take a WR at 60, but I would be open to it if there was a surprise player available. -

I’m flexible at 60 - if they don’t like the WR pick another position. My point is - accept a bit of step back and get good players. I’m not forcing WR in any round this year. -

Ok - you could be right. I just look and see zero depth at safety and iffy starters there. I see only Elam who has shown very little as depth at corner. I think anything they get from Miller at DE is a bonus and, while I like Epenesa, I don’t think he and Rousseau form a particularly potent pass rush pair. There really is no depth behind Oliver either. I see a good pass rusher as a big need. A corner to start in case Benford or Douglas get hurt as a big need - and that guy will likely have to start next year as Douglas ages out. I guess they can live with Rapp and Edwards, but I don’t think they are ideal. Fixes to those problems aren’t all coming in this draft. Now, if the offense adds a couple of dynamic receivers, maybe they can out score everyone, but I don’t think that is the way to a championship. I certainly hope you’re right. -
Lance Zierlein: Bills should draft 2 WR in the first 3 rounds
OldTimer1960 replied to Beck Water's topic in The Stadium Wall
I don’t think anyone believes that the Bills are all set at WR. To me, they need 2, but that won’t solve all of their problems by itself. So, I feel a modest down year coming. Get at least 1 receiver, maybe 2 if they are BPA in 1st and 2nd, but don’t expect that will solve the problems of being paper thin on defense this year. The thing I want to avoid is trading next year’s early picks. They are set up well to get competitive again next year - don’t give those picks away. -
You could be right, but I think his 165lbs will be a concern for many teams in the first. I do think he will go in the early-mid 2nd
-
I think we may be seeing everything through or lens of “wr or bust”. While possible, I think Miami will go another position first, unless Waddle is due a big payday. They will need to pay Tua next year or find another QB.
-
He might not have physically practiced directly with the team, but I believe he could watch and then work separately. He said that he really learned and worked hard on improving. There is no guarantee that he will be good enough, but I think he has put in the work. I’m not sure that he isn’t as good a prospect as Keon Coleman- both have size and lack desired top end speed and sharp cutting ability. I would not count on Shorter as an answer as the starter, but it’s possible he shows out.
-
I agree, but while his upside could be pretty high, he (Walker) has quite a way to go to get there.
-
You’re argument makes a lot of sense, but they might really regret spending that pick on him. I just can’t get over his inability to get open consistently.
-
Walker has great size and speed, but the Senior Bowl showed that he isn’t able to compete well with the big boys - maybe he can improve.
-
I think we could say that KC just won the SB without a true #1. What exactly make a WR a Wr1? Is it the receiver that gets the most targets? Does he have to play the boundary? Can he be a “move” receiver who sometimes is out wide? Can he play predominantly in the slot? I get the idea that you want a receiver whom defenses have to pay extra attention to to free up other receivers and that WR1 is the “go to” guy.
-
Just playing devils advocate- I don’t think Miami and its prolific offense have that big boundary receiver. I’m not saying that the Bills shouldn’t try to find one, but I think there are successful offenses that don’t have that.
