Whatever the reason exactly, they need a legit deep threat. Nothing against Goodwin but not sure he's the answer. This guy is as fast and is bigger. The guy replacing Corderelle P in Minny is also a similar looking undrafted player. Get a reliable deep threat and a decent pass catching TE and Bills passing attack is very high octane.

He's a great player, a complete player at his position sorta like Freddie. Took out two guys on Hogan's TD. Is a asset in what is essentially the run game (screens), is a possession receiver and can stretch the field. Best WR in a strong draft class. I don't pretend to know today whether giving up the extra first was the right move, but I'm confident in my own mind that he is totally outstanding and good enuf to have gone 1 overall.

Jay Gruden May Be Shown The Door.
starrymessenger replied to george c's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Snyder ha ha what a comedic genius. I hope he fires Gruden only to see the good people of Washington hang him from a tree in 2015 as Robert continues to crap out. Heck we could hire Gruden as OC. -
Gotcha. I was quibbling over your use of the word talent. I gather that you meant it to be read as synonymous with throwing a beautiful ball and being a terrific athlete rather than ability as a pro quarterback. Thanks for clarifying that for my benefit. In my view being a world class athlete is way down in the laundry list of things that make up a franchise quarterback, the things that RG3 badly lacks. It is, in effect, only a nice to have and to be lightly weighted as a factor in envisioning the total package.

Great post John. But I think you confuse "great athleticism" with "talent" (for playing the position). In a world where all the players are above average athletically, there is little if any correlation between the two. How many starting QBs are known principally for their athleticism? How many genuine franchise guys?

The Demise of the Running Quarterback?
starrymessenger replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
He has his detractors but IMO he's a fantastic football player and QB who I think will have a long and successful career. Unlike other QB "phenoms" (RG3 for example, maybe Kap or possibly even Cam) given his extraordinary, rare and peculiar skill set I don't think he ever gets " figured out " and neutralized (or otherwise diminished). So you wish we had drafted him? Well you will just have to console yourself with TJ Graham I guess, as doubtless you did when we drafted Whitner over Ngata, or Troup over Gronk. -
The Demise of the Running Quarterback?
starrymessenger replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
R. Wilson is not a running QB. He is a very mobile QB who can buy time in or out of the pocket in order to keep plays alive and pass the football, which he does well while scrambling. He is the Fran Tarkenton of today. A scrambling QB. Of course he can gain yardage running when his receivers are covered, but running the football is otherwise not what he wants to do. -
Bills awarded TE MarQueis Gray from Vikings
starrymessenger replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
You are right to do so. Also CBS Sports. Gragg ran a 4.46 at the Combine. Gragg has very good measurables. If he hasn't been able to pressure Chandler as a receiving TE, it must be that he can't run routes and gain separation. We really don't know that MG, who is slower but still reasonably fast (ran a 4.65 at his pro day) can run routes either. -
Let's Stop Being Doormats to the Pats!
starrymessenger replied to folz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Good idea! Wish we had thought of that sooner. Would have avoided more than a decade of aggravation. -
It's pretty obvious he can't handle it. He's not Steve Young. And even Young couldn't play as long as he did in today's NFL with all the concussions he suffered. What's worse is that in order to be effective RG3 ran a lot more his rookie year than the tougher Young ever did. And as a base offence the read option has pretty much gone the way of the wildcat anyway, though it has a limited place in some teams play books - Seattle, San Francisco. All he had to do at Baylor in Art Briles system was throw to wide open and talented receivers. It doesn't work that way in the pro game, and before we say Chip Kelly bear in mind that although his system may be QB friendly, it actually asks the player to do a lot. RG 3 cannot execute the way that Sanchez did the other day. He doesn't see the field, can't read a defence, doesn't go through his progressions, can't make the right decisions, holds onto the ball etc..He's pretty much a useless player. Just another world class athlete who cannot play the all important position. Those who focus on his "talent" are really just confusing athleticism for aptitude in playing the position. They are not the same thing and only marginally correlated. At the end of the day, guys like RG3 are not rare. True franchise QBs are rare. In my opinion he will likely be in the discussion for all time epic busts. If you were serious about taking a chance on a player, do whatever you have to to get Jameis W. Bills could actually have half a chance if his stock dropped a lot because of off field issues (assuming he comes out this year), though it would be very costly. If he's just immature and not really crazy (which I tend to believe) he would be worth it. He could be as good as Andrew Luck - and that's about as good as it gets.

Tony Moeaki: He's no Lee Smith!
starrymessenger replied to The Frankish Reich's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't know if Moeaki could have been the answer but I understand the sentiment. If the Bills had a really good and complete TE and a legit vertical threat WR they would have absolutely all the tools for a top shelf passing game. Imagine Gronk instead of Troup and TY instead of TJ. Just to say that such things are not impossible. -
He had success in an offence that relied upon his ability to run the ball. It's an exaggeration, but not much, to say that he was a running back playing quarterback. Unlike Wilson, he did not run in order to buy time in the passing game. He was a true running quarterback in a designed system that did not require him to do the laundry list of things that pro QBs have to do to succeed long term. He didn't have to do those things at Baylor either. So's he looks very much to be just another world class athlete who cannot play the all important position at the highest level. There are lots of guys like that. People confuse athleticism with talent for playing the position. They are very different and only marginally correlated. How many great QBs are world class athletes? He's obviously not much of a leader either, and that actually is important as part of the job description. So as a running QB who is not as durable as say Steve Young, can't go through his progressions, read a defence to save his life and who can't back up the now empty hype he's in the discussion as the epic all time bust. Instead of being a generational talent, he has set the Skins back a generation. The Bills can do better. I would like to see them make a major play for Jameis W. He's the best prospect since Andrew Luck and could be as good.

Well I honestly did not expect to see a post like yours, which is fine. I certainly hope your right, and it did occur to me at the time that maybe he was just putting it completely out of harm's way. However, after his KC and Finns game the presumption in my mind is that he was only generally accurate, that Woodsie was able to bail him out and Sammy wasn't Liked the toss to Chandler tho. Anyway my view right now is that he needs to sharpen up his accuracy if he is going to have any success against the better secondaries he will soon be facing. Kyle said when he first got here that it would take some time to develop chemistry with this young corps of WRs. I fully take him at his word.
-
Orton's accuracy was hardly pinpoint last night. Woodsie bailed him out. The passing game is still very much a work in progress. Orton certainly has some good games in him...and some not so good. He's average if only because he's not consistent. Average has to look pretty good to Billsfans tho. The D is really what this team's all about right now.

Patriots look scary good...
starrymessenger replied to Dragonborn10's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
They are my pick to win it all. They are the most complete, well balanced team looking at both sides of the ball. Tom Brady is playing as well as he ever has (at 37 years old no less). Gronk is an unstoppable force. Edelman is a younger, more versatile and better Welker. Trading a long in the tooth Mankins for their second pass catching TE Wright was a major win, given that their O line is getting the job done. Brandon Lafell has matured into a reliable and disciplined pro, no longer underachieving. Even playing short handed without Mayo, Jones etc... their D is outstanding. They seem to find productive, bruising RBs out of thin air. If they fall short of a championship this year it will be because their opponents will have come up with the very best game they can possibly can and with the ball (and the breaks) bouncing their way. In other words, the Pats will have to be unlucky not to win. -
Ben Tate, LaGarrette Blount released
starrymessenger replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
You're right. Hill went a couple of spots before Hyde. My bad. I guess the Bills were hoping Hyde would last until the third. -
He's 6'3", 230, 4.38 40. That's who. Undrafted out of Central Florida. Correction drafted 181. Not a Combine invite tho.

Ben Tate, LaGarrette Blount released

They were interested in Carlos Hyde before 49rs picked him. But Jeremy Hill was still there. Hill instead of CK? I guess hindsight is always 20/20.
