Teddy Bridgewater market???
starrymessenger replied to elltrain22's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I can agree with some of this but I recently saw tape of all of Bridgewater's throws over 15 yards in 2015. It was ugly. Very ugly. So while his short to intermediate range accuracy may be an improvement to what we've been accustomed to seeing, his long ball is questionable. Maybe that was not all on him but at least some of it had to be. Also obviously some questions are as yet unanswered when it comes to his fitness to play. -
Nah I'm not worked up at all. JMO. Sounds like you've seen more of Lamar than I have, so I do credit your opinion for that. I've seen enuf to know that accuracy is an issue and I agree that right now he is not the passer Baker Mayfield is. So there is that. Where we probably differ is on how he projects and how likely he is to develop as a pocket passer. To me his inaccuracy is 100% attributable to a mechanical and specifically a footwork problem. His stance is too narrow at times (less than shoulder width), shoulders/hips not always properly aligned with the target, and he has a tendency to push off his front foot instead of transferring his weight properly through his delivery - resulting in overthrows. To me this flaw is extremely fixable with coaching and if you believe that the sky is the limit for this kid as the total package and lynch pin of an innovative and productive offence. I also rely on the upward trajectory his development has shown as a passer, a trend that I think is likely to continue at the next level. He looks to me like somebody who is willing to put the work in. Im not married to one QB type over another. My #1 prospect is Rosen. But if I had to chose between Mayfield and Mike Vick, I'd pick Mike Vick. Not that I don't like Mayfield. He's a good prospect too and I wouldn't be disappointed if he was the pick.

If we haven't gone for a much better prospect at the position earlier in the draft, of which there are many, I would not be against taking him in the 5th round (not before). To me he can probably do what Karlos did (or reasonable facsimile) spelling LMc. Wasn't Karlos also a fifth rounder?
-
I think he could well be better than that. To me his ceiling (and it's not a guarantee he gets there) is Andy Dalton. That's not bad but in looking at this class I see a lot more upside elsewhere and I see no reason not to go for that.

Lamar Jackson on why he chose Louisville ...

Yeah. Great if he's still on the board at 21 like so many are assuming but I think he could well go before that. -
Lamar Jackson on why he chose Louisville ...

Agree. IMO Rosen should probably be the # 1 pick in this draft, not because he's necessarily the most outstanding player (Barkely) but because he's pretty much prototypical in terms of translating to the next level as a franchise QB and of course because of the position he plays. Jackson is IMO the next most desirable prospect, though Mayfield, Darnold and Allen are first round worthy and I could live with any of them (depending on exactly how, where and when in the first). As for Jackson-Tyrod comparisons, if Tyrod was or could develop into an effective pocket passer (which he can't) I don't believe anyone would be thinking of trading him. Tyrod is largely limited and unidimensional. Jackson is a multidimensional threat. -
WR Tavon Austin Set to Be Traded or Released

I guess he didn't revolutionize the game after all. -
Brandon Beane on Lamar Jackson...
starrymessenger replied to PIZ's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
He does not IMO. If you are looking at RM's class the better comparison is Cam. Outside of that class, Mike Vick. Cam is 30 pounds heavier but I think LJ will benefit greatly from a NFL strength & conditioning program. I don't see why he wouldn't be able to put on another 10-15 lbs. He bulked up from his sophomore to his junior year. At 6/3 230 he will be a big QB, big enuf. I understand that he can't run at the next level the way he did in college. But neither has he shown any indication that he is prone to injury. Quite the contrary. My ranking is based on the belief that Jackson, if given the chance, can develop into a good pocket passer to go with his being a threat to help himself out with his legs. Right now he is not the passer that Mayfield is for example, but I see Jackson as one of those guys who has consistently and will continue to improve. That upward trajectory is something that has to figure prominently in the evaluation, and not just for Jackson. For all of these prospects with the exception of Rosen, there is a fair amount of "projecting" that has to be done. I think the case can be made that Jackson is the guy who has shown the most promise in terms of that "continuing to improve at the next level" thing. Thats why I rank him as the # 2 prospect. I know this is a minority view. -
Brandon Beane on Lamar Jackson...
starrymessenger replied to PIZ's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think there is a good chance LJ winds up in Arizona if he doesn't come off the board before. My ranking of the QB prospects in this class= 1) Josh Rosen 2) Lamar Jackson 3)Baker/Sam (flip a coin) 4) Josh Allen. They are all first round worthy, and that's where I think they go. -
I don't question Rosen's mindset. I certainly don't question his talent. When it comes to throwing a football he is 100% a natural. Really should be the #1 pick based on demonstrated ability. The only thing that gives me pause is injury history, specifically concussions. I would worry about that. A lot. Anyway I sure don't count on him ever suiting up as a Bill.

I met Laurent here a couple of times. My cousin teaches him at McGill medical school. He's come a long way as I guard since his college playing days. I asked him what the difference was between college ball (Canadian at that) and the NFL. I was expecting to hear "bigger-stronger". He said no, that it was almost 100% technique and that he pretty much had to learn it from scratch. Credits his line coaches. Interesting guy. French Canadian kids are hockey players. Thats the culture. Guess he was too big for that growing up.

Dion Lewis not expecting to re-sign with Pats
starrymessenger replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
He gets nicked up a lot and he played in a crowded backfield last year. He's not an every down back but if you can spell him the way Karlos was handled I think you could get the same or a similar return. Given the need I would be ok burning a fifth. Actually I doubt very much that Dion is ever going to suit up as a Bill in 2018, I just really like the player a lot. More realistically there are lots of very good RBs in this draft and you can probably land one in the third or maybe even later. -

This guy's a great back IMO. Reunite him with Shady and draft the big Bama back in the 5th round = best ground game ever. -
Sam Darnold not throwing at combine
starrymessenger replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Agree but when I look at that big baseball windup I think it's going to need a lot of work. Maybe he can go with it in college (and even there he had some turnover issues) but in the pros time (the less of it there is) is money, big money. -
All the reasons to draft Josh Allen...
starrymessenger replied to Roundybout's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
IMO this is true and also needs to be said. The thing about Allen (other than his jaw-dropping talent) is that he is inconsistent. He is capable of executing properly, at least in terms of his throwing mechanics and knowing where to go with the ball, and when he does that he looks like a player worthy of being mentioned with Barkely as possibly the best of this class. But there is plenty of tape where he doesn't do things the way he should. Anyone who drafts him, especially if he's taken early, has to believe (hope) that he can learn to show more of the "good" Josh and less of the bad. It's a risk to be sure, maybe even a fairly big one, but it's not reckless. EJ was inaccurate as a passer but EJ never came close to flashing the same ability throwing the football that Allen does on a fairly regular basis, albeit not as often that you want to see. Allen can do it. The question is can he do it more often? EJ could never do it. Not all inaccurate QBs are the same. Allen is not the prospect Wentz was, not nearly. He's raw and unpolished. So I have a hard time seeing anyone picking him at or near the top of the draft. But if he fell to the Bills where we pick I would not be disappointed if he was taken as a developmental pick. The upside is there. I'm for Lamar Jackson so if both players were still on the board I'd take Lamar as another guy with lots of upside but IMO less risk. An important question regarding Allen is pocket presence. Not surprisingly he is much better working from a clean pocket. Tape shows a tendency to bail early but it is also true that even for the level of the conference his O line was bad in pass pro. So it's hard to know whether or not Allen has pocket presence, which is to a significant extent instinctive/intuitive. That's something I'm sure scouts are and will be puzzling over before the draft. -
Cousins is a good QB and he's going to get paid. He's earned it the hard way. But I think he may be somewhat overrated relative to the dollars he may command. I'm not sure I mind so much if the Jets back up the truck. There may not be much of a net benefit to their roster overall in allocating so much of their cap to securing his services. If I'm the Bills I think I'd rather draft/develop a guy and sign a veteran capable of starting to serve as a bridge.

I think that Jackson may well turn out to be the best of a good and deep QB class. My gut tells me that Beane likes him too. Ideally he would sit and develop for a year behind a vet. But these days first round QBs are more often press ganged into service immediately. If the Bills drafted him I'd be surprised if they invested in the kind of vet FA QB who might be expected to play for years as a starter. A vet backup would essentially mean that Jackson would probably be starting and learning on the fly. Perhaps not ideal but D. Watson has said that Jackson is capable of doing what he can do, and I believe that. I think the only QB in this class who is good to go day one with the least transition friction is Rosen assuming the offence he runs is built for a classic pocket passing/WC offence QB (which in his case is pretty much the only logical assumption). I expect that Jackson is already viewed by the talent evaluators of QB needy teams much more highly than the talking heads would lead you to believe. I think that sentiment will only gain momentum in the next couple of months so I don't think he will fall to us at 21. He could go much earlier in the first.

Kizer is raw and needs to learn (maybe another year away) but he absolutely has all the tools and he's a good kid. Jeremiah was very high on his long term prospects. He'd be a lot cheaper in a trade than any of the main guys in this year's draft who may well not be within our reach anyway. We could do a lot worse.
-
Of course I understand that but what I'm saying is that he looks to work the pocket well, knows how to buy time, has the awareness. Not sure you can ask for more than that. He's certainly less skittish than Josh Allen. He also goes through his progressions very well and throws with a lot of anticipation. I see a lot to like. One problem is that he has a disproportionately high % of balls batted down at the line. Maybe he's not as tall as college measured, or maybe it's his arm motion.
