  1. I'd go in with my poker face and offer a third. I would cough up a second though and try to extend him for an extra 2 years at a (hopefully) reasonable rate.
  2. I agree with McShay and Kiper that Allen will be the third QB to come off the board, probably a top 10 pick. Rosen is the clear # 1 although there may be some drama to come regarding his maybe not wanting to play for the Browns. I would probably grade Darnold ahead of Allen but not by much if at all TBH. They are both somewhat raw but with very high ceilings. Darnold has a windup delivery where the ball dips as low as hip level. They tried over the summer to change his release but apparently were not able to do so. Hard to break bad habits that a player falls into naturally. Some observers are very worried about this. Others say they can probably live with it. He often does not set up properly even when he has time. He trusts his arm too much and will throw into coverage. The picks are the result. Allen actually has much better throwing mechanics. No wasted motion, generally straight over the top. Good weight transfer, steps into his throws properly. Like Stafford he has so much arm strength that he can throw with zip sidearm or any which way that a situation requires. Like Darnold and most other strong armed youngsters he too trusts in his armstrength too much for his own good at times. Darnold is athletic but Allen is bigger, stronger and even more athletic. He routinely breaks not only arm tackles but straight up "put you on the ground" type tackles. He is also not just football fast-he is flat out fast. From what (little) I've seen the claim that he is inaccurate is not quite correct. His accuracy is inconsistent, sometimes spot on, sometimes not. I never thought EJ was an accurate passer at any level, FSU or NFL. Allen looks to me like someone who can improve in that department and in ball placement. Some people who have seen all of his games say that it would be a mistake to look at his lousy stat sheet and conclude that he is truly a sub 60% completion passer. His 2017 supporting cast was not great, the team having lost four starters to the NFL. His armstrength is not good. It's not great. It's insane. Deep out to the opposite hash? Ball gets there in a nanosecond. It's ridiculous. From all accounts Allen's intangibles are very good. A clean, competitive kid with the will and the work ethic to be great. That's why I view with suspicion the conclusion that he could be another Jamarcus Russell. Frankly if he were available with our first pick I would be all over this guy and he looks to me like the type of QB that Beane likes. There were lots of questions concerning Cam's accuracy and ball placement when he came out. We won't be drafting him IMO because he's going top 10-15. During the pre-draft evaluations you know he's going to stand out. No doubt some teams will fall in love with him, and with justification IMO.
  3. You can certainly find a good to serviceable RB in later rounds, in FA or off the street even. There is a big difference between that kind of guy and a franchise back. The crazy thing about this year's draft is that there are a number of players that could seriously be regarded as franchise backs. Sometimes there's only one in a class. More often none. That's why it will be interesting to see how OBD will approach this class. They already have a franchise back on the roster, but for how much longer. How much importance do they attribute to the position? Do they prioritize it more than they usually would because of the talent available? As a trend picking franchise backs early is back in fashion in the NFL - Zeke, Fournette. There are so many this year they could nab one in the second, maybe even in the third.
  4. This is a very good description of Penny as a runner. The writer is absolutely right in saying that Penny is a three down back because of his versatility. As a runner he is not limited situationally. But some observers say he is not good in pass pro. That ability can factor into whether you translate as a three down back at the next level. He will be asked to work on that. Eager to see how the brass will approach the RB issue in the upcoming draft. It is a need and given the strength of this year's class they may burn a meaningful pick on one.
  5. I think this has been discussed. Presumably if they opt for a vet he will be someone who is good enuf to start. Alex Smith, Teddy Bridgewater etc... One guy backing him up (presumably Peterman) and another on the PS if not on the active roster. That's sort of normal or at least not unusual. That of course assumes that they do not use the bulk of their draft capital to move up for someone they see as their franchise guy. In that case you might well not bring in a vet to start (so Peterman would be or would back up the starter, depending on who won the job, and you roll with two QBs). Or you bring into TC a lower level vet to back up as a security blanket and if he beats out Peterman (the result you seem inclined to believe) and they don't want to carry 3 QBs, then so be it.
  6. Tyrod is certainly the more reliable option at this time. But of the two he might not be next year. Tyrod has been in the league a long time. He is what he is and has always pretty much been. Peterman has been in the league a couple of months. To assume that eight months from now Tyrod will continue to be the more desireable starter assumes that Peterman cannot improve or cannot improve enuf to surpass him. I don't see any good and sufficient reason for necessarily coming to that conclusion, certainly not the fact that he was overmatched in his first start or was picked in the fifth round. That's just too easy. Neither at this point is there reason for saying that NP will definitely improve (enuf). But the word around the league seems to be that the Bills like him and see something there worth working with. Obviously I'm not a football professional and I'm not close to the action, don't get to see the practices etc...but as a fan my impression, and that's all that it can be at this point, aligns with that.
  7. Fair comment. I'm wishful thinking a bit. Andy Reid is rumoured to want a second and that's what it might well cost. Also tho a third might be doable Tyrod might only garner a fourth what with the # of vet QBs who make be on the market. And of course not every QB is scheme versatile. I like Alex Smith partly because I think he could execute Dennison's offence. But he might not fit everywhere. Actually, before it became obvious that the Browns were going (again) to be in a position to draft at the top I thought Tyrod might be a good choice for Hue Jackson's O in Cleveland.
  8. Sure. Some keep 3 some keep 2. If you are lucky enuf to land a decent prospect in the mid to later rounds you would probably PS him unless you were worried about poaching.
  9. You have been upfront about Tyrod's limitations. That's why I said you might not fall into "that" category of poster. In that case the point is that your aversion to Peterman is IMO unreasonable and over the top given the limited sample size. Of course you may be right. But then you may also be wrong. If he turns into anything remotely good I will look forward to seeing what you have to say about it.
  10. Certainly how the Bills make out at the all important position is more important. But how you or any other poster makes out is not unimportant. Football savvy is a skillset. One that we all practice and try to be good at.
  11. What I am talking about is posters who form some sort of psychological or emotional attachment to a player which then precludes a rational evaluation and perhaps causes them to be inordinatelty and unreasonably critical of another player they interpret as a competitor and a threat. At the end of the day their "opinions" are nothing more than dramatizations of their inward states and desires - not unlike a dog's behavior. Maybe you don't fall into that grouping. Whether you do or you do not, you are unambiguously on the record. Time will tell how you make out.
  12. Fair enuf 26. But now you are locked in and there will be no going back. When you were saying that NP was not ready you were in a good place, but saying that he's just no good is a much riskier proposition IMO. That does not appear to be the view of OBD BTW. Introducing partisanship into player evaluations is just stupid. It's not what good fans do. It's what tiresome idiots and cultists (on both sides) do. Maybe if Peterman turns into something you will retreat to the "was not ready - that was all" position. But given the bile with which you have expressed your views nobody will be buying it. You are not doing yourself any favours IMO.
  13. You trade for Alex Smith and keep Peterman and another developmental pick taken in the 2018 draft.
  14. To me there are only three guys who you might consider moving up for, Rosen, Darnold and Allen (not saying it would be cost efficient). Moving up for either of the first two is not happening because the teams at the top of the draft order will not be trading out. Those two guys are headed to Cleveland and NY IMO. I think Allen might warrant a modest trade up. I also think that if he is falls a bit and is there when we first pick the Bills could draft him. His physical attributes for playing the position are at the very top of this class. He has good intangibles. He's not nearly as polished/ready as Wentz was, but he's bigger, stronger and carries an top end NFL calibre cannon like no other in this class. He and Darnold have the highest ceilings IMO. Both are in need of coaching/ development and neither can be counted on to start. I'm a little puzzled why Darnold's risks/negatives don't budge the needle at all, while Allen's generate so much critical comment. They both have a lot to prove and a road to travel. I just don't think that Mason Rudolph will be regarded as good enuf, even if he is there when we pick. Mayfield is out of the question. There is no way Beane will pick a smurf. Jackson could be possible if he is there with our second pick in the second round, but it really depends on whether they believe he can execute from the pocket which appears to be unsettled, especially after the TaxSlayer fiasco. My suspicion is that they will try to trade for a vet good enuf to start - A. Smith, or compete for a UFA like Bridgewater if he is not extended. If so they may not draft any of the front runners and look instead for a diamond in the later rounds - Mike Smith if he makes day 3 (doubtful IMO). i think the braintrust sees an opportunity to seriously challenge for the division next year with a good draft and FA and they have credibility as talent evaluators so why not. I think these guys are in a hurry and in the win now mode.
  15. Use whatever you get for Tyrod (a 3rd is reasonable) and use that pick for Alex Smith. Instant and seamless upgrade IMO. Good draft and FA and you challenge for the division next year. Tyrod is almost certainly done here. Panthers have three QBs on roster. All prototypical size (if not bigger) pocket passers. Carolina thinking is now our philosophy. Also why we will not be drafting Mayfield, who will be there in the first when we pick IMO. No smurfs for Blo.
  16. Lots of guys have lost incentives recently. Eric Weddle was within one play of earning an extra 1 million dollars. It flew out the window on the wings of Andy Dalton's pass.
  17. Stack the box, shut down Fournette, let Bortles screw up. I think we win the turnover battle - two picks and a fumble recovery. Tyrod needs to be at his off the wall best. This game is probably as important to him and his career as it is for the Bills. If he does well Bills can ask for a third with a straight face.
  18. Good stuff. Thanks for posting. Kyle's eyes almost popped out of his head.
  19. Jimmy G is the real deal. The 49rs can franchise him. That's why they won't have to.
  20. It's not actually about enforcement. So much for the law (assuming that it is constitutional). Like everything else in this administration its about the base, without which this presidency cannot survive. Sessions is not going to harass recreational users, as has been mentioned. He just wants to warm the hearts of evangelicals and other assorted constituents of the right. Weed stocks will bounce back as soon as tomorrow.
  21. Turnovers will destroy Jax come Sunday. Bills win.
  22. It is often said that very serviceable running backs are relatively easy to find. And that's true. Bills found Cadet, now Murphy and Green. They can get the job done behind Shady. Question is whether the Bills should now upgrade through the draft to land their next feature back. Don't know whether RB is any kind of priority with the braintrust but if it is this is a great year to be picking one. Penny, Sony, Love in the second or third?
  23. Yknow, Darnold has the attributes you mention but there is no way he is ready to start IMO. To that extent and depending on how you use the expression Darnold could be referred to as a developmental pick, albeit with a high ceiling. Mike White has a big arm and can make all the throws (at least according to what I've read). Kizer already has him rated 5th best in this class. He's been invited to the Combine and many expect him to be a draft riser, maybe not like Wentz was, but 6th/UDFA - no way. Or, we should be so lucky. If he lights it up at the Combine/Senior Bowl he could sneak into the back end of the first. Sorta where we pick. Otherwise a day 2 pick in all probability.
