Edelman w help does something good..
starrymessenger replied to PatsFanNH's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
True. Still wish he was a douchy little Bills prick. -
Yeah, its not like I've seen him a lot but given the hype I was a little disappointed with his bowl game. Reports are that the Penn State O-line had its best game all year, but they were hardly an elite unit and they seemed to me to pretty much neutralize him. On a couple of crucial third down conversion attempts they ran right at him and backed him up. For a guy his size seeing him on special teams covering punts was pretty impressive though.

What my guess is as to whats going on is seen through the prism of personal opinion so maybe not worth much. Having said that I would not be surprised if Beane and Gettleman already have an understanding, not a deal but an agreement in principle. I think the Giants are interested in a QB, very possibly Darnold. If the Browns scoop their guy they will trade out and we will pretty much gut our draft to move up to the sweet spot. We don't know how any of these QB prospects are going to pan out but at the end of the day I see Rosen as having the best chance of developing into a franchise guy, he carries less risk in terms of what you can reasonably expect him to do on the field performance wise and he is pretty close to plug and play in the right offence. OTOH if the Giants like Allen ang he is gone I would'nt be surprised if the Bills moved up for Darnold. And why not. He's only 20 years old and absolutely a blue chip prospect. I would not move up to 7, 5 or 2 for Allen. Maybe I'm just chicken*#^+ risk averse. I do like him though and I'd be fine with him at 12 if the other front runners are off the board. He is not EJ or Jamarcus or the guy who busted in Baltimore. Sometimes even small sample sizes can be revealing. He was mediocre his first couple of series in the Senior Bowl game. He knew he could do better and agitated to go back in. He did and then led his team (against good competition) making some absolutely outstanding big league throws, demonstrating pin point accuracy, excellent placement and touch. If he had come back in and stunk it up that would have been a bad look. Instead he lit it up. I'm pretty sure that sort of thing makes a strong positive impression on pro talent evaluators. They likely see lots of flaws and have lots of questions regarding all these guys. Every one of them needs work in order to transition successfully to the next level. So they probably focus as much on what the guy looks like when he's in a groove and is doing well. When Allen is on he looks pretty darn good.

Jordan Palmer on Josh Allen
starrymessenger replied to Thurman#1's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Of course I don't know for sure but my impression is that Allen can probably improve on his accuracy. When in a clean pocket with time to set up his mechanics looked pretty decent to me so I would not be surprised if Palmer is right in saying that he needs minor adjustments/tidying up rather than a complete rebuild/overhaul. There is also this thing about the real meaning of "inaccuracy". Allen is arguably not inaccurate, rather he is perhaps more "inconsistent". I think there is a meaningful distinction there to be drawn (even if that can be debated). In all of the game tape and live action I have seen, Allen makes some very difficult throws with perfect ball placement and also with remarkable touch (for a guy who is supposed to have none). He just doesn't do it enuf or as often as one would like, and just as often shows the contrary. The question I have is more related to skittishness in the pocket and decision making. Here again though it is possible that he is overreacting to his weak O-line when he bails early, and many plays looked to me like jail breaks, and trying to do too much under pressure. So he is rough around the edges to be sure and almost completely devoid of refinement. All that you mostly notice is his jaw dropping physical talent. Bottom line is that if he can be developed the sky is the limit, though he needs to go to the right team. Without a top shelf QB coach I tend to doubt that would be the Bills but if he is the pick I will have no problem getting begind him and regardless of where he winds up I'll be intrigued to see how he pans out. I would not myself move up for him but if the other frontrunners are off the board I would not be upset if he was taken at #12. I think he will go before that however. -
3-30: Ryan Leaf on the Rich Eisen Show
starrymessenger replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Good interview. Guess he's not so dumb after all. I'm not concerned about Mayfield's personality. My impression is that he's basically a sensible guy who will be able to transition from playing a game with a bunch of kids to a professional environment where many of his fellow players are grown men with families to support. I think he has more going for him in that regard that some folks are willing to give him credit for. His size, his only average athleticism and the college system he played in are the things he has to overcome. There is a reasonable chance he will be able to do that.. And that's why he's a top prospect. -
Why would Jackson take the Wonderlic test and not - -
starrymessenger replied to Punt75's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I like LJ. I think he has "football smarts" so I don't worry about the wonderlic. The cognitive aspect of playing the QB position is part reactive/intuitive and also physiological, a bit like hitting a baseball well. Big league hitters don't see an aspirin like most of us do, they see a grapefruit. That skill has nothing to do with intellectual capacity. So you don't actually need to be a Harvard graduate to play the position. Its not an "intellectual" endeavour imo (though being intelligent does'nt hurt). I have no doubt that in time LJ can master a complete NFL playbook. OTOH not running the 40 and hiring mom as his agent to save money is entirely consistent with scoring 13 on the W. Its just not a good look and could affect the way some teams evaluate him. -
I would not move up to draft Allen. I would seriously consider drafting him at #12 (though he'll be gone by then) but only if the other four (Lamar is #2 after Rosen on my list) are already off the board. He is a great prospect but 100% a project. I don't put too much stock in his 56% completion percentage. This is impacted by the offence he ran and the types of throws he was asked to make. Also I've seen him make very accurate big time throws as well as demonstrating good touch on occasion. So he is capable of doing what he needs to do imo insofar as improving his technique and throwing mechanics. That is not where the biggest risk is. Pocket presence and decision making when under pressure are the main questions in my view. If he can improve in these areas, he could easily develop into a high end QB but it probably takes very good coaching and a year or two behind a solid veteran starter just to find out if he can get there. Absolutely ideal physical attributes for playing the position tho, no doubt about that. God made Allen in his spare time on the seventh day, a Sunday.

April Fools: Bills trade up with Giants!!
starrymessenger replied to Kirby Jackson's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I was fooled the first time I saw this weeks ago. Now I was fooled again. Shame on me. -
Rex Ryan expects the Bills to make huge offer for #2.
starrymessenger replied to PIZ's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Bradley Chubb makes a lot of sense since JPP. I also think Rosen makes a lot of sense for G-Men. But I also think that Beane may well decide to package an offer Gettleman cannot refuse. And if he does Josh Rosen will be sporting a Bills uni imo (right after Browns pick Sam). -
Smokescreen. I would not be surprised if the Bills really like Allen. They were not trying for the #3 spot to draft Lamar. You need to have a view on whether Allen can clean up his mechanical/technical issues (my guess is he can) and whether he has or can develop pocket presence (idk the answer to that question). But if you have reasonable enuf confidence to think that the answers may be positive then you are looking at a guy who belongs at or near the top of the draft.

Bucky Brooks: Book on Lamar Jackson
starrymessenger replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Not to worry. He wont be drafted in the 2nd rd. -
McDermott: NFL is a “drop-back league”
starrymessenger replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If indeed they tried to move up to #3, Lamar was never the primary target imo. That would be moving picks for nothing and not something Beane would do. -
I would have no problem getting behind Lamar at #12. And I can see how Beane might like him. Although he is not the same player as Cam Newton, they are similar inasmuch as both are capable of making plays with their legs and both enter the league with questions surrounding their ability to execute consistently in the passing game. And I would'nt be surprised either if Lamar developed as a pocket passer in a way similar to what Cam has been able to do - not in the same class as the league's elite passers but good enuf to keep defences honest - so a clear notch above what Tyrod brings to the table. But if the reports of the Bills having made a strong play for the #3 spot are true, and I believe them, it suggests to me that Lamar is not their # 1 QB prospect because they would not have needed to move up that high to pick him. So probably the preferred target was one of the top 4, probably Darnold or Rosen but possibly also Allen or Mayfield (with Allen ahead of Mayfield imo). Question then becomes whether the Bills think whoever is leftover after the QB feeding frenzy is over justifies an early pick (at 12) while still allowing for team building and filling holes in the roster. Of course there remains the possibility of a trade up on draft day because only then do you know how things actually shake out for the Bills and other teams.

Per Beane, no discipline from team for Zay Jones
starrymessenger replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
When I'm naked anyone can see I have a weapon on me. Regarding Zay I hope he can turn things around. Sounds like about 180 degrees is what is called for. I still think he can be a good receiver. JuJu was the guy I wanted tho. Have to admit I did'nt know Zay at all. -
Making the case for Lamar Jackson
starrymessenger replied to 502Buffs's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Actually he's 6'2"1/4 and weighs 216. He prolly wont get any taller but he will get bigger and stronger. His technical/mechanical issues are a little overblown imo. If he's the guy he will be ready by mid-season. Mind you dont expect him ever to turn into Drew Brees. His ball placement/accuracy will probably never be that good. But there is every reason to think that he can develop into a competent passer who will be capable of making plays, including big plays, with his arm. -
CB Phillip Gaines visiting Bills
starrymessenger replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This guy is young, has lots of experience and is very talented as far as his measurables are concerned. When it comes to the secondary I have full confidence in McCoach's ability to evaluate players. If he thinks he can help this kid leverage off his physical skills in his scheme I'll be intrigued to see how it works out. -
No. One of the positives in his case is that he has relatively little tread on his tires. He's good for sure, but there are a few issues - tends not to gain yards after contact and has work to do in pass blocking. Unless he improves in pass pro he's prolly not a three down back at the next level. I think he maybe lasts until the third round.

Broncos to host Josh Rosen

True. But every football player does. -
Bills very interested in rudolph
starrymessenger replied to *******'s topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
To me MR is not a first round talent. Not first tier = not first round. I would probably take White or Lauletta or maybe even Fergusson ahead of him. -
Another Great Breakdown on the Rookie QB's
starrymessenger replied to Scorp83's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I pretty much agree with what DK says about this year's class. I see Rosen as the likely front runner and have always also seen Matt Ryan as a good comparable. But I also agree that there is not much difference on a net basis between the top four (or 5 guys - I'm a bit more postive regarding Allen than he seems to be) when you consider their relative strengths and weaknesses. There is no Andrew Luck in this draft but there are good prospects who qualify as legit top half of the first round talents so I think there's a good chance that the Bills get to draft one of them if they see it the same way. I most like Rosen but I'm not sure that I'd gut this and maybe next year's draft to land him as opposed to staying put and picking Jackson later in the first at either 12 or 22. Could say the same about Darnold and Mayfield. -
I think the Bills would really like that # 2 spot, reason being that they are comfortable with either Darnold (on the off chance the Browns don't jump on him) or Rosen. Maybe like the Iggles re Goff or Wentz. And I think its quite possible they value Darnold over Rosen, tho if so it speaks to their risk appetite and projections more than demonstrated ability IMO. I think that if the Giants are not taking a QB, there is a very good chance that a deal gets done with the Bills. I'm inclined to think that they are going QB however and will not be trading down to 12. Depending on just who these teams like at the QB position, there could be the possibility of a three way trade with maybe Indy. I think its unlikely G-Men would accept #12 if they Want a QB.

Is there a rush to judgement on Peterman?
starrymessenger replied to Sky Diver's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Interesting. Thanks. One of the criticisms I have come across more than once in evaluations of Allen's mechanics is that he does not rotate his hips properly and so actually sacrifices optimal velocity ie its all arm strength. I dont myself see this when he gets to set up and fire from a clean pocket, which is logically where you'd expect to notice it, but it may be true. -

starrymessenger replied to Sky Diver's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yeah I really don't understand this velocity thing very well. To me Jackson's tape shows plenty enuf arm strength ( and occasionally even some real arm talent). As for Peterman I'm not yet ready to say he has a noodle arm. Need to see more. This year in TC he needs to show that he is starting to acclimate to nfl gamespeed. If that does'nt happen then yeah he's probably just another 5th round QB so no surprise there.
