Waiting for Round 2 worth the risk?
swnybillsfan replied to 4merper4mer's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
it all comes down to impact. the people in the war room have to try to make a decision on which player will make the most difference at their pick and it just seems like there are a lot of variables to weigh into that decision. and as a fan, all i can do is hope that on draft day i do not scare my kids and break my tv! -

in all honesty i don't know much about any of these guys. i don't watch much college ball so i have to relly on the expert opinions of my fellow TBDers. in closing, you can appreciate how badly my head is @!#$ed right about now. buddy, i'm really hoping that the sun is shining on your backside come draft day! -

please capatain, tell me your powers are not fading! -
i remember tasker very well and he was an absolute terror on special teams. there are people who had half a foot and near 100 pounds on him that could not come close to hitting with the impact that tasker had. he is one of my all time favorite bills. to this day, i will sit with my stepson and watch old bills footage and say "that is how its done!" also, if steve would have been a full time reciever, he may have done well, but i don't think he would have had anywhere near the impact he had as a special teams demon.

in your opinion is this something we should be worrying about? because it seems that most on this site are not overly concerned and have faith that it will just kind of work itself out. -
Landry Jones - QB - Oklahoma

i think i would be a lot more upset if the bills were not kicking the tires on all of the qb's coming out in this draft class. if there is no clear cut, concensus qb coming then i guess you have to really do your homework. go get 'em buddy! -
Ryan Nassib - QB - Syracuse

this is good. it's important to have a work ethic like this. it let's everyone (coaches, assistants, gm's, teammates, and even fans) know that if he fails, it's not going to be from a lack of effort. -
ego and pride. to be able to prosper where others perish. to not only do what nobody else wants to do, but to do it great. and finally, to become a folk hero and living legend to an entire community. if any of these people are motivated by old-school values rather than just the money, then maybe one man will realize that if he could bring a championship to buffalo, his legend would be passed down reverently for countless generations.

it's my thinking that the opposite opinion may hold a bit of water here. if they wait until after the draft to fill out the roster, they will have the choice of picking whatever players in the draft they will feel helps the team most (buddy's "best availeable" concept), regardless of position. then after the draft you can sign journeyman vets to fill whatever holes you have left. and then there are always the camp cuts and the raiding of other teams practice squads. crap, guess i shoud have read the whole thread before replying...i mean...yeah, what he said!

Some Nice Words From Coach Marrone

yes he was, but i would much rather have a beer with chan. i would imagine his stories are much more interesting. but, i get your point, there are a lot of great guys out there but it's time we got us some winners, dadgummit! -

i still have a lot of respect for chan gailey, and i thought it was great when he said that. -

more importantly, i hope that he and his staff can put the players in position to back it up. -

i feel good because he sounds like he gets it. football, and more importantly the buffalo bills, are a huge part of our lives here. it sounds to me that he believes it's a bit more than just a job. i'm really hoping he's the guy that brings us back. -
My view of drafting and this draft
swnybillsfan replied to Cheddar's Dad's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
if that's the guy you like just take him. there is no need to get cute with this and dare someone to jump up and grab the guy you like. if you truly like one guy better than the others, take him. if you are not sure which one of 5 or six you want, then by all means, play around and get whatever you can. but if you know what you want at that position (and the bills damn well better know what they want!), and he is there when you pick, it's best to leave nothing to chance. -
the biggest thing flynn has going for him right now is that he is basically an unknown quantity. but i wouldn't be willing to trade anything for him or his current contract. if he were to be released, my interest would be a lot higher. as for kevin kolb, no thank you. he has a big enough body of work to show he is not going to be the guy going forward. if he were to be had for the vet minimum, i'd bring him in to compete for the backup job, but i don't think that's what he's looking for at this point in time.

CAVEAT EMPTOR ! Some Truths about Free Agency
swnybillsfan replied to Dr. Trooth's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
we could use a few more like urbik and chandler. they are very good value players, solid players that contribute to what success the team does have, and i don't think either of these players can be blamed for the failure of the team as a whole. solid, affordable, and dependable. that's what i'm hoping the bills can find in this year's free agency/waiver wire crop. and as far as bud light, there is definately such a thing as too much. -

i absolutely expect to see improvement this year. my two biggest concerns last year were coaching and defense. this team is not without talent, yes we have holes. lots of them. but we also have some good peice and a couple that could be great. and as far as drafting one of this year's "turkeys", yes, i absolutely want to do so. it doesn't need to be in the first, or even the second. i just want this team to take a legitimate shot at a quarterback they think they can work with. also, if we pick a rookie and the kid comes in and has statistically the same season that fitz has averaged the past couple years (3,000 yards, 20+ td's and 15 or so int's) but shows signs of being able to play beyond fitz's physical limitations, i'll be very happy with that. because that shows you now have a qb you can move forward with. (and if we draft a kid that can play with the stones that fitz played with, consider that a win as well.) -
Ryan Nassib - QB - Syracuse
swnybillsfan replied to BuffaloBillsForever's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
there is probably something to be said about familiarity with one's coaches. if he is brought in, he will certainly know what is expected of him on and off the field, and he should have a pretty good grasp of the overall offensive philosophy as well. i'm sure that the playbook would differ quite a bit from what they ran at syracuse, but this particualar qb would definately have an advantage over other drafted qb's in that regard. also, i think that there would be a comfortability factor involved here. that could go either way depending on nassibs internal make up. but by all accounts he is an average athelete with a great work ethic and i see that as a benefit for the team overall. if his teammates see him working hard, then they in turn should do the same. and lastly, the immeasureable qualities that nassib seems to have would also come into play. if he is a dedicated, hard working, blue collar guy who has good natural leadership skills, that sounds good to me. having said all that, i don't know if he is the guy or not. but if this staff feels he is the best fit for the team coming out in this draft, i have no problem with him being selected at 8, or 41 or anywhere in between. -
to me, it's the unproven nature of pettine as a dc that intrigues me and has me very optimistic. it seems he will be doing everything in his power to put his players in position to succeed and will be very motivated to prove that he is more than the man in the shadow of some great defensive minds. and as far as jim leonard goes, he could be a good depth/role player and veteran leader for this team. it would not make me giddy with excitement but i'd be on board with it.

swnybillsfan replied to Cheddar's Dad's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
the problem i have with waiting until next year to grab a qb is that you have absolutely no idea what will happen between now and then. if you are expecting this team to improve this year then we will have a worse pick than this year in the first round, and it would seem logical that with a pick somewhere around 13-16, there will be no way we get even a sniff of one of next year's "elite" qb prospects. and on the other hand, if you want this team to bottom out and get a top 3 pick, then we will be that much closer to looking for a new coach. i think we need to come away with a legitimate rookie qb prospect this year and give it hell, nothing says we can't draft another one next year if things don't work out. but i feel we at least have to try. -
