  1. One way or another, we need a LT, but other than that, I see two possible scenarios playing out-

    LT

    LG- Levitre

    C- Wood

    RG- Incognito

    RT- Meredith/Bell

    or what I would do...

    LT

    LG- Incognito

    C- Hangartner

    RG- Wood

    RT- Levitre

Either way, assuming they re-sign Incognito and Wood is ready to go, they only need one tackle and they actually have pretty decent depth.

I just saw a post where a guy is talking about drafting a tackle in each of the first two rounds!?! I really believe our OL is not as far away as say, our QB situation or even our WR's at this point.

Do you actually believe the B.S. you are selling or are you just trying to piss people off.

Levitre is not an NFL tackle. Wood may not be back to start the season. Butler retired. No left tackle. Bell and Merideth are backups.

THE BILLS OFFENSIVE TACKLE SITUATION IS DIRE! THE ONLY HEALTHY STARTERS UNDER CONTRACT ARE HANG/LEVITRE.

  2. In the 3-4 Defense there are typically two outside linebackers and two inside linebackers. The weak side inside linebacker is typically called the "Will," while the strong side or middle inside linebacker is called the "Mike". "Sam" is the strong outside linebacker, and "Jack" and is like a hybrid DE/LB. I assume this is where Maybin would fit in.

Poz and Mitchell would likely play inside, and I think they'll put Maybin on the weakside, where they don't always have to face the big interior linemen one on one (unless one is pulling or they have some exotic blocking scheme) So far the only thing we know about Maybin is that he struggles with the 300 pounders and would play better in space.

(We also know that he'll hold out for money to the detriment of the team and his career and try to blame his agent, but that's another post.)

In coverage, which Maybin has virtually no experience at, he would cover the running back that attacks his side of the field first in man coverage, and they also cover the flat in zone coverage. You need a fast guy that can run, rush the passer, and cover, which means they should be working with him TODAY on that stuff because he's so inexperienced in coverage especially and they know the 3-4 is coming to Buffalo.

Usually, teams that run a 3-4 defense look for college defensive ends that are too small to play the position in the pros and not quite fluid enough to play outside linebacker in a 4-3 defense as their "Jack" linebacker. I learned that from the Coach's playbook they were giving away when he was on 550am in the good ole days.

The idea behind the 3-4 Defense is to disguise where the fourth rusher will come from. Instead of the standard four down-linemen in the 4-3, only 3 players are clearly attacking on nearly every play.

3-4 needs three large defensive linemen who command constant double teams especially the Nose Tackle. The focus of the 3-4 defensive line is simply to occupy offensive linemen and dont get pushed back. We have Kyle and Stroud for that, but I'd be adding 20 pounds to Spencer this offseason and looking for a 340 true Nose Tackle in the draft on day one somewhere.

The bottom line is that next year is going to be Maybin's REAL rookie year, first time in camp, first time with the 3-4 learning a new system. I hope he makes so many tackles he'll be too tired to celebrate like an idiot on mediocre plays as he does now.

I bust on him but I am really pushing for the kid. He could be a great Bill.

Don't forget that the Bills worked him out at OLB last year when Ellison went down. He couldn't shed guards or centers either. He couldn't drop or cover screens. He is a bust for a number #11 pick. We could have picked up a fourth rounder to play OLB in a 3-4. BUUUSSSTTTTTTT

  3. and you know this because...?

In AM's college career, he never had to drop in pass coverage and because of his holdout, the Bills never got a chance to train him how to cover receivers out of the backfield or short passes over the middle. Give him the chance to learn the OLB position with a full offseason and good coaching before you make statements like that.

WRONG! The Bills worked him out at OLB when Ellison went down. He couldn't handle dropping into coverage for his third of the field, not even for screens. He couldn't shed blockers either so they had to go with Scott at OLB.

Before you "make statements like that" learn the facts.

    MAYBINS A BUST!

  4. Aaron Maybin's body shape has changed drastically in the past year. When he was at the combine last year he looked like a defensive end at 6'4 250, now he looks samller than James Hardy 6'5 220. How does a player lose 30 pds of muscle from March(combine) to August(training camp)?

I guess next season we will get the answer?

I argued with people all last year regarding Maybin because I said prior to and after the draft that Oher was the best pick at #11 . Maybin may go down in Bills history as the worst pick ever! He cannot play OLB in a 3-4 scheme. They worked him out there on the outside last year and he was lost in space. If he only has to rush on every down then he may get a sack next year, but what a wasted pick. We could have taken a OLB last year in the 4th or 5th round to be one dimensional.BUST!

  5. Listening to a DC radio show this morning, they had a call claiming very reliable "inside information" (lol)....that Campbell will be moved to Buffalo for Whitner and a pick. I've seen plenty of Jason Campbell. The *only* thing he has going for him is arm strength to slice through the wind. That he has. His iffy pocket presence, annoying habit of hanging on to the ball way too long and captain checkdown tendencies are big negatives in DC. I suppose he could be a credible backup QB but i would not be excited at all to get him.

I've watched alot of Cambell over the past several years. He is a significant upgrade over anything we have. He is tough, physical, great arm, smart enough and is a good teammate. His footwork has improved as well as the number of turnovers. He is not a vocal leader, indecisive at times and just plain dull. Take it from somebody who watches every Skins and Bills game, he would be good for us this year so we could cut Edwards and even Fitz but he's not the long term answer. If we trade for him AND draft a QB that would be great.

  6. Just curious...while no draft pick comes with a 100% guarantee, my thinking is best player available would result in a better football team in the long run...

    Thoughts?

I think you need to be flexible and not hold to a single draft philosphy. The BILLS team needs in some areas are glaring, such as O-Line and NT. We should draft the best available OT and NT in the first 1-2 rounds; and then the best player available the rest of the way focusing on QB, DE, OLB, WR. We should shy away from secondary help in rounds 3-5 becasue we are set there for several years, pick up a CB/S in rounds 6-7 if there is a good one still on the board.

My draft would look something like this, not exactly but within this framework:

    1 OL Give me Baluga

    2 NT Take Williams

    3 QB I like Lefevour

4OL Maybe Veldeer is still available

5OLB Bowman out of Penn state (he shares my last name)

    6WR, DE best available player

7OLB, CB best available or best player on the board

This would be a good draft for this year. If we trade down and get an extra pick-great. We will need FA's to fill depth roles or starting roles as well. This years crop of FA isn't too exciting but there is good depth at OLB, OL.

  7. so I am ignorant? :P

Eric Berry would be a gift at #9. Do you mean to tell me if we got a playmaker at S that would hurt this team? Berry and Byrd would be tremendous!

We need playmakers! I agree with the lines. But don't reach for need if our scouts are not sold on them. I would rather have the #3 rated DT in a draft class very deep at DT then the #1 rated LT in a very weak LT draft class. I want players that will be quality players for the Bills the next 5-10 years. Not some #1 rated LT who will be a turnstile then out of the league in 3 years. Seems obvious to me

Thanks for making my point so well for me. You would draft a safety with our number 9 pick. Enough said, you don't need me to tell you that your ignorant, just keep posting.

I don't typically bash a fellow BILLS fan, I will make an exception for you because I can't help myself.

  8. as opposed to your draft strategy. Um lets see. We had the #4 pick overall in the 2002 draft and needed offensive tackles. Using your strategy- that justified drafting Mike Williams or Bryant McKinnie. Use my strategy you have your choice of Ed Reed, Albert Haynseworth, John Henderson, Dwight Freeney- whomever is highest rated on our board. I think your draft strategy sucks. Checkmate

My strategy for this draft would be to focus on both lines, then QB and LB, then WR and best available at the end.

:You say my strategy sucks w/o knowing it...your ignorance on full display. You can't use hindsight and say we could have drafted him, instead we took this guy who didn't work out, that's spilled milk. I am saying that we have many serious holes to fill and we better get offensive tackles, nose tackles, linebackers before the start of the season or we are screwed. I do not care who is the best player on your board when you pick. You pick the best player available to fill major holes like OT and NT. You go ahead and pick Eric Berry if he is there at # 9, that would be foolish. If we don't do something about our lines we are done.

  9. not me. I would not draft a QB until we drafted/signed 2 DTs, LB and NT(real DT, LB and NT- not tomato cans). Do you think Bradford would of played well last year for us? Our lines are in shambles. We have been neglecting to fix them since the superbowl years. And Fitzpatrick, Trent, and Brohm is serviceable until the lines are fixed. Bradford and Clausen are not franchise QBs IMO.

    And for the 1,000th time-

ALWAYS DRAFT THE BEST PLAYER AVAILABLE NOT FOR NEED!

Your draft strategy sucks! So if the best player on the board in round one is a safety, you'd take him instead of the best OT left? Your strategy is seriously flawed, glad your not our GM. If we are stacked at a position, like safety, and we have no tackles, then you would take another safety?

  10. This is the best strategy on this chain and precisely the reason the Bills should make a fair deal for McNabb.

"Fair Deal" The Eagles will demand a premium for McNabb. I would rather use our first two rounders on a LT and QB if possible. Again I am not against bringing him in at all, it is the tall price we'll pay for having him 2-3 years. The posters who think we are ready to make a deep playoff run by trading high draft picks for him are uninformed. We have alot of holes to fill, AND we are switching defense schemes. I have not read one argument on this post that makes me believe we can win a Superbowl by trading for McNabb. We will give up too much and just set us back. I would rather draft well the next two years and build our team that way. Then we'll be ready to compete in 3-4 years for a title.

  11. Trading our future for McNabb would be a mistake. I believe he is a good quarterback and could help us win more games next year, but he is not taking us to the Superbowl. We need a franchise QB, solid 3-4 defense (currently missing 2-4 LB's, NT, DE ) and improved lines on both sides of the ball. Trading for McNabb only sets us back in getting all the players we need to reach the Superbowl. It will cost us at least 2-3 draft picks and maybe a player or two. It is too high a price for a team with so many holes to fill. Do not be short-sighted! We need to have a blue print that will lead to a Superbowl ring in 3-4 years, trading for McNabb will not bring us a Superbowl victory, only set us backwards.

  12. I am not talking about what the sports analysts say who are often used to put out propaganda.....or the Eagles themselves.

    What would it realistically take?

It would take more than he's worth. We are not built to win now. By the time we have good enough talent on our roster McNabb will be gone. We should have a 3-4 year plan that involves getting a franchise QB and above average talent around him, we have neither. It is not worth the draft picks to get McNabb for a few years. I say we build from the inside-out and get our franchise QB this year if possible, but if not pick him up next year.

DO NOT be short-sighted and jump on the McNabb bandwagon. We are 3-4 years from competing for a superbowl. Let's use our draft picks wisely, build a great 3-4 defense, get a franchise QB and then be ready to eat Buffalo wings during the superbowl watching our BILLS!

  13. There is enough O-line talent currently on the roster w/ Bell, Meredith, Scott. They just need to stay healthy and hopefully our new strength and conditioning coaches can help remedy the problems there. I think the Bills should go McClain with first pick, best run stopping DT in second, and if he is still there Lefevour.

Are you serious? Our talent at LT sucks! Bell is in way over his head, he is at most a backup or practice squad. If you're advocating to go into this season without a significant upgrade in talent at LT then you my friend are ignorant to the game.

We need to draft a LT in either round 1 or 2 and maybe agin in later rounds. Butler is not guarenteed for next year coming off another knee injury. Our OL killed this team last year and I for one do not want to repeat our mistakes.

  14. I don't see Maybin as having the same intensity as Paup. He was a pitbull, cut up and bleeding and lovin every minute of it. I see Maybin more in the mold of Biscuit but with out the bulk. Hopefully he can find his place on the field. It could be worse he could be Vernon Golston!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! For all the bashing Williams took at least he played until he borrowed the "Fridges" diet plan.

Actually Gholston produced better numbers, granted Maybin had less PT. But if he was any good then he would have seen the field more. I think Maybin=Gholston.

  15. Chan and Buddy finally narrowed the pick for the new DC down to one, but were sadly disappointed to find their selection, a Tennessee guy...had chosen death over being designated defensive coordinator for the Bills....Buster Ramsey

    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/20...653705341_x.htm

Ramsey would have really brought some life to the defense as one of the founders of the fashionable 4-3 defense. He has familiarity with the Bills front office. In anticipation of the offer, and looking at the present situation of the Bills he chose rather to retire to his home in heaven where he will continue to follow his beloved bills.

Tennessee boy it's Virginia boy. Put down the shine when your logged on; don't pick up the key to the 4-wheeler or pickup. Turn on Springer, fry up some scrapple and check on your trailcam. Just stop posting when drinking the clear your making us country boys look bad.

  16. You guys are crazy

I love McNabb......but not the cost of a first round pick.....no way. I would trade my 2nd and 4th

Based on WHAT? Becasue you wouldn't give up a first rounder on principal, value...why?

WE SUCK AT DRAFTING! Ralph Wilson is still here and has a big say as to who we pick. There is not 1 first rounder we've drafted that I wouldn't trade for McNabb, except for Kelly. We usually totally blow our top pick. So unless you can provide a good argument to not trade #9 for Donavan...then you're not making sense.

  17. Wrong! Could not disagree with you more. We need a stud LT more than other teams becasue we don't have a franchise QB. I saw in another post on Rumblings the thought of moving down to #15 to get Buluga and picking up another 1st or 2nd by trading picks. I like that idea of moving down a bit to get our LT. Unless we can get the best 1 or 2 QB's, we have to take a LT with our first pick. Give me a Jake Long, Dbrickashaw Ferguson, Joe Thomas and we will be set for 10 years at the most important line position.
