  1. I'm sure the Bills will go after a WR after letting Stevie walk. The wheel spinning continues.

    This.

There is no coherent plan at OBD. All they do in the draft is patch up leaks.

Can we build a dominant unit or two? And THEN patch a hole or two when we are 1 or 2 players away from doing something serious.

Lets stop drafting every single year with a stupid goal to improve to 8-8. I'll settle for 2 more years of 6-10 if year 3 is 13-3 because of solid drafts with an actual plan.

  2. What decent OLB wants to have his edge set by Spencer Johnson?

Spence is actually not bad on the line, the problem is you've been seeing him play as an OLB. He's too big and slow to be an OLB, but because of injuries we played him and Carrington out there. spence can play a 3-4 DE well enough, not OLB though.

5th round wrs are better than 4th round OTs.

    What?!?!?!

My point about 5th round wrs is that after about the 3rd round, you dont find good Offensive Tackles, but you can find good wrs in almost every round.

So when OP said to draft wr, then later an OT, I was saying that he had it backward.

Wouldn't the OLB be replacing Spencer Johnson and be the the one setting the edge?

On passing downs, i'm pretty sure its the DE who sets the edge for the OLB to run around. I'm assuming that OLBs want to go to teams where they can pressure the quarterback.

Sure, on rushing plays, maybe the olb, especially the LOLB, might have to set an edge to drive traffic back inside.

  3. Based on the Bills track record and their "cash to cap" directive, don't expect the Bills to sign any significant free agents in the off season.

    1) I think the majority of us can agree, Merriman & McGee are finished, an their release should free up about $11M cap bucks. That alone ought to be enough to extend Fred a year or two and give Steve Johnson about $7M.

    2) FREE AGENCY. I would expect the Bills will bring in one healthy, experienced OLB (of the backup variety) and a mid level wr with the ability to stretch the D. In fairness to Batten, it was essentially his rookie season without any offseason tutoring. Same with Moats, his second season, and no offseason tutoring.

    3) DRAFT. Bills need a "plug and play" guy that can immendiately step right in from day one and make an impact, as Marcel Dareus did. The one thing the Bills can least afford to do in the first round is draft a project or someone who projects to a specific role or position based on potential or one hell of an impressive workout rather than the players body of work (I think we all know where I'm going with that statement). With the Bills drafting 7-12 depending on what happens this week, I think this pick is a no brainer, Courtney Upshaw. May not be the next Cornelius Bennett (or maybe he will be), but he is clearly the most NFL ready player that can step right in to a a 3-4 OLB role and make a difference immediately. After the first round they need a true NT in the 340lb. range (no way is Dareus 340 lbs. as listed). Torell Troup hasn't shown any ability to play at a high level or stay healthy and Kyle Williams can't hold up at NT for a full season (move to DE or inside in 4 lineman situtions?). The two NTs I have on my radar are Alameda Ta'amu and Kwame Geathers, both in the 350 lb. range. One or the other should be available when the Bills pick in round 2. After that, yes, the Bills need a solid corner or two. With McGee done and McKelvin on the bubble, the Bills need depth. After that, wr, tackle, safety, TE. I'd say a developmental QB, but that's a reach after round 2. Fitz ain't the answer, but he can hold down the fort for a couple years. Maybe next year the Bills will be in a position to grab a QB in the first round... not this year... big holes on defense.

    4) We know Edwards is done as the DC. But here is where we need to be really careful. A lot of fans think that Wanny will take over. It could happen, but if it does, it signals two things... 1) Buddy has lost control because he's a 3-4 proponent, 2) Wanny only knows the 4-3 and the Bils only have a single DE on their roster (Kelsay) that can immediately function in the 4-3. All other DL on the Bills are 3-4 ends or 4-3 tackles. And, you have zero OLBs that can run in a 4-3. Folks need to take a look at Wanny's body of work and see that he was only effective when Jimmy Johnson propped him up. It was Jimmy's defense in Dallas and it was Jimmy's personnel that Wanny took over in Miami. He flopped on his own in Chicago and at Pitt and quit in Miami when he realized he was in over his head. I'm OK if the Bills keep Wanny as Asst. HC, but the Bills really need to bring in an experienced 3-4 coach... perhaps Mangini, Nolan, Pees, or similar.

Oh really, Fairy Godmother? Name a single decent OLB or speedy WR who will be desperate enough to come to Buffalo when he hits free agency. What speedy WR wants to extend his career by having Fitz throwing to him downfield about once every other game? What decent OLB wants to have his edge set by Spencer Johnson?

Yes, I am stating the reality that Buffalo is an unattractive destination for free agents.

As to your draft analysis, I can agree with the first round. And maybe the second round NT that you want (but I prefer another linebacker), but after that, I think you should draft OT higher than WR. 5th round wrs are better than 4th round OTs. And for sure, this team has needs other than Safety. Hell, we need RB more than safety, and LINEBACKER more than anything on planet Earth.

  4. With how he's performed on the inside, I don't see who in the right mind wouldn't put him and KW at the DT spots and just officially shift back to the 4-3 full-time, pick up a good DE and see if/how this pair + some edge help can bust up through the middle/collapse the pocket and make QBs have to scramble (one hopes) into dumb mistakes.

The 3-4 experiment failed. Soooooo much of this team's problem is the inability to generate any kind of a pass rush against teams that have anything for an OL. Against the Iggles, there were a couple of times we blitzed eight (count 'em --- 8!) and still did not get within 5 yards of a pocket-passing Vick.

For a couple years before we switched to 3-4, I had been arguing that the primary benefit would be that our Offense would finally be able to practice against the defense that every team in our division was running. Getting to the playoffs starts with winning the division, and stupid JP and stupid Jauron couldnt seem to solve the 3-4 "puzzle."

That said, I want what works best. We have about 1.5 linebackers. If you arent going to draft me several linebackers this year, then why run a 3-4??

  5. I disagree, the jury is out and has announced their verdict, SOLID win for the Bills. Regardless of whether the Bills have replaced Evans, they are certainly no worse off without him. They dumped his salary, and gained a mid round draft pick. Losing Easly, Parrish, and Jones was unfortunate, but Evans was hurt as well.

(when the Jury is OUT, it is out of the courtroom, deliberating over its verdict. Then, when the Jury is IN, we have it announce a decision/verdict. Just sayin. Carry on).

  6. Seriously? Barnett absolutely does not need to be replaced. If you really think that, then that says all I need to know about your football knowledge.

I assume his point is that Barnett was not retained by a Super Bowl Champion. Meaning he was not a "starter" on a "good" team.

Yes, he is for sure one of our best linebackers. But by implication, that suggests that we dont have a "good" team or "good" linebackers.

  7. GRUDEN? Chucky thinks he's the next John Madden in the booth. Gruden had the keys handed to him, in his only success.

Also, for some reason, Gruden seems to lose respect in his locker rooms. Maybe he's just not a good modern-day HC. Probably a helluva quarterbacks coach, but he wouldnt take that demotion.

    I'll pass on chucky.

Marty-ball is the only realistic shot. I agree with young and hungry first though. No established names want to come to live in BUFFALO, with no real QB, no serious OWNERSHIP, a bean-counting front office, and 2 other (soon to be 3 other) big-time head coaches in the division.

  8. 1) Dolphins

    2) Dolphins

    3) Dolphins.

Anyone who doesnt have Dolphins #1 is probably less than 35 years old. That is really the only other team whose result is important to me every single week. No matter what the Bills do, I have to know what happened to Miami before I can sleep. God I hate them.

Worse, I am sad that this isnt one of the NFL's top 3 or 4 rivalries anymore.

  9. If you could trade our entire offense for Green Bay's offense, and keep our Defense intact, OR trade our entire defense for San Francisco's defense but keep our offense, which would you choose?

    And why?

I say the Niners defense. Easy. They are young, strong, hungry. They are what we wish we were.

If we had the Packers offense, they would only get 5 or 6 possessions per game, because teams would pound our defense to death playing keep-away. But with a top defense, our Offense would get more chances, and Fitz wouldnt have to try to win every game. Then we could take our time in FA and Draft to build up our offense.

Can I get my linebackers now? (If I can get one of the top 3 qbs this year, I will take him. Otherwise, front 7 for at least the first 3 picks). You cant have too many linebackers and pass rushers. That's why the Giants keep drafting DEs and the Steelers keep drafting linebackers. And the Bills keep drafting running backs.

  10. Please draft a QB blah blah blah. We need to draft one blah blah blah. Lets do what the good teams do and draft a guy blah blah blah.

Blah blah blah Williams blah blah Dareus blah blah blah.

    Streamlined your post.

I still want 3 to 5 linebackers this year, but i'm cool with getting a QB first. And if I get a qb, i want him first or not at all.

The rest of your post is just noise.

  11. ...in trying to talk myself into coming back as a fan of this team next season. I've been a diehard fan since 1988. I've seen a lot of good, but over the course of the last 12 years, seen way more bad. I even promised a boycott for the final three games this year, but I caved and turned the game on today. And guess what happened?...well, you know what happened. If I was the owner of this team, or the GM, I'd really have to put myself in the fans' shoes. What reason do I/we give the great, loyal fan base of the Buffalo Bills to come back next year? Its been 12 years since we've been in the playoffs. We've had one winning season in that span. How in the world do we even get half of the people in the seats at the stadium? Is it REALLY this difficult to build a winner? To get competent and relavant football minds to run this team? To actually sign people who can play and, or more importantly WANT to play here? To actually HIT on a single draft pick?

Guys, this is ridiculous. I know, I know, I'm beating the already perverbial "dead horse" here. But year after year of watching meaningless football into December is wearing on this particular, loyal Bills fan. This year really felt different. Do we really deserve this? Haven't we been through enough? Wide Right...Four Superbowl losses, the Music City Miracle, and now, 12 years and counting without a playoff berth.

We've given so much passion, loyalty and committment to a team that year in and year out gives us virtually nothing in return...

And I just don't know if I can do it again...

. . . I think you are looking for "proverbial." As in something that is based on a proverb, or sounds like that kind of handed-down wisdom or fable.

I dont think you mean to suggest that its something done by perverts.

    Carry on, sir.

  12. Not even close. This one stat doesn't support that. I for one think Miami is in much more shambles than we are and have been, among other teams like Jax, Browns, KC, St. louis, Vikings, Washington. I wouldn't take any of these teams over ours.

Note that OP did not say "team," he said "franchise."

We're not talking about trading roster for roster. We're talking about comparing everything over a 7 year span.

  13. I'm pretty sure they can lose without him.

Build the defense, receivers as good as Brandon Lloyd are available every year for low draft picks. Don't get distracted by fringe players when you trenches are leaky. 2 pass rushers, 1 Ilb, and 1 OT. The rest I don't care....

Stevie Johnson is a nice player, but he's 1 great catch (per game) away from being a great player.

    Bless you, my son.

  14. They (Jeff Fisher's Agent) have announced today that Jeff Fisher will listen to offers from any team (in order to drive up the market price). I think we should do everything we can to (negotiate another team's deal, since we have no chance in Hell to) sign him! Then we can get him to admit the Music City Miracle play was a forward pass!!

Then can his sorry _ss

Seriously, he would be an upgrade from Nix/Gailey, but only with no restrictions from Ralph. Not going to happen.

    FYP

  15. Note: Not a single linebacker is injured (except Merriman, who has been injured every day for 3 years).

And yet, the defense continues to suck.

Please, lets fix the linebackers. And draft enough of them to have depth, in case 1 or 2 goes down. A 3-4 defense needs maybe 7-8 linebackers. We currently have about 2.

  16. While I don't like the idea of just fixing one position in one draft, here you go, drafting 5 LB's:

1-Whitney Mercilus OLB34 Illinois - Better stats, motor, and motivation than Upshaw

2-Devon Still DE34 Penn State -would have been Manti T'eo, but said he's going back to school yesterday

3-Lavonte David OLB43 Nebraska - He could play 3-4 as well as kill it in a 4-3

4-Devin Taylor OLB34 South Carolina - Can also play DE

4-Kellen Moore QB Boise State - Accurate and savvy, a student of the game

5-Jarius Wright WR Arkansas - Speedy receiver to stretch the field

    6-Jonathan Massaquoi OLB34 Troy

    7-D'Angelo McCray DT34 Memphis

Aaaaaaaah. Now THIS draft get me in the mood.

All thanks to Astrobot, who already knows this, but it cant be said enough times. You are so necessary to the intelligent discourse on this board. I dont know what we would do without your input. Most (all?) of us are waaaaay too lazy to actually look stuff up.

Thank you sir. I would be in heaven if your draft came to pass.

As much as I would love for this to happen, it is one of the dumbest posts I've seen since I have been on this board. One of the great draft debates has always been "need" vs "best player available". If our first 5 picks were "LBs just happening to be best players available" I would be all for it. Unfortunately the odds of that are one in a million.

    SOMEBODY PLEASE EDUCATE OUR FANBASE.

Buffalo takes pride in having a knowledgeable fan base. Unfortunately, posts like these will ruin that reputaion.

What's wrong with "Best Linebacker available?"

You chose to switch to a 3-4, which requires many linebackers. You have about 1 or 2. You know that linebackers are what makes a 3-4 go.

So how about COMMITTING to getting some?
