Enough dodging: who is the QB for this team/why?
maddenboy replied to OCinBuffalo's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
EJ will be the starter. EJ should be the starter. Whether its week 1 or 3, EJ should start and we should never look back. Look back at his highlight tapes. He is smart. He gets the ball to receivers in position to make plays. When he becomes a running qb, he understands how/when to slide or duck out of bounds, or when the time is right for the occasional "I'm 6'4" and 225 and you're not" type of play. Kolb is a shellshocked deer in headlights, whose dream is to earn NFL backup money for as long as he can. Think its funny? Ask Chris Palmer (brother of Carson) whether he has earned more than the rest of us will earn in our entire lives. ("earned?"). An important part of that formula is to continue to talk like you're a starter, like you have swagger, etc. Yawn. The coaches will install plays for EJ and bring him along, precisely because he is so good at decision-making, and because Kolb is so good at cashing paychecks without ever - quite - being good enuf to start, but still making sure to be better than the 3rd string qb. Ahem. Ryan Fitzpatrick. Cough cough. -
When you guys talk about Stevie and 3 consecutive 1,000 yard seasons, I hope we remember that: 1000 yards is only 63 per game. Being on the field for every offensive snap, 66 yards is not much to brag about. As far as the OP's question, I cant choose anybody on the defense, because it depends on how they fit into the new system. Offense is offense, so I will choose Robert Woods. He's a rookie, I know. And rookie WRs find it hard to contribute. But as a 2nd round pick, I think he will surpass his draft status and shock people. Especially across from mr. "1000 yard season."

This. I was born and raised in buffalo, Bailey-Kensington area. So I'm genetically a Bills fan. Used to sell pretzels at the stadium during the glory years ("wait, I get to see the games for free AND make money???!!!" And of course Bocce's or Bob-N-Johns, or sometimes John Young's King of Wings on Delavan got a good chunk of that money on the way home) I've lived in other cities (currently in LA) and left B'lo about 20 years ago. This is probably my most favorite story of how a non-Buffalonian became a Bills fan. And yes, Buffaloes are cool. I remember the first time I saw them at the Buffalo Zoo. Rock on, sir.

Chad Johnson, aka Ochocinco, a wanted man
maddenboy replied to Just Jack's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Former California prosecutor here. For the years I prosecuted, I hated for a judge to give somebody 30 days. 30 days or fewer is known as "book and release." You go into the back room with handcuffs, you get printed and sit in a holding cell for a couple hours, and you are released that night. Jail overcrowding and such. And the judge did not have authority to order the Sheriff to actually keep him in jail for the full 30 days, or any fraction thereof (although a few have tried, and tried to make me/us enforce it). Judges would give "30" days only as a wake up call. Its not real jail. And anything over 30 might still be book and release. Sometimes the judge would call sidebar and ask me whether 40 days was currently "book and release" thinking I had a hotline to the Sheriff's current policy, which I did not. And with PC 4019 credits (time off for "good behavior" http://codes.lp.find...N/3/3/4/1/s4019) anything over 30 days was usually cut in half (even though 4019(f) says 1/3), minus thirty. So a 45 day sentence was (45-30 = 15. 15/2 = 7. So he's gonna do, at most, 7 days on a 45 day sentence). So if she had wanted him to spend an actual 30 calendar days in an actual jail, she would have sentenced him to around 90. (depending on the county and the current state of overcrowding. In Eureka county, 30 might be 30. In LA or San Diego or SF or Riverside, 30 is pretty much "book and release" and everybody knows it). So calm down, people. She's trying to get his attention, as she should. Its easier for him to spend 5-6 hours in a holding tank than to do 25 hours of community service. That's why I hated it. -
The list is a popularity contest. Among NFL players. The OP asked whether CJ "would" be on, not whether he "should" be on. I think he will. He was a sexy up-and-coming back last year. Frank Gore is kinda boring with not much highlight reel stuff last year. Both backs split time. And I think they realize that CJ in San Francisco would be better than Gore in Buffalo. When they ask the players to rank the top 20 (not top 100) I think they think of: (1) espn memories, (2) who do I wish was on my team, and (3) best players, and not necessarily who had the best season. CJ > Gore in all of those categories.

EJ's throwing motion is amazing
maddenboy replied to Webster Guy's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It feels unclean. Unholy. To watch a "highlight" reel of Marino. Its just wrong. I cant do it. Maybe you have to be under 30 to be able to watch it. I cant stomach it. -
sigh. now I have to wonder if its EJ or Nassib. No telling which way they lazily dealt with the Bills. Considering that half of each show is devoted to the Cowboys and the Jets, I have to assume its Nassib, in America's biggest market. Sigh.

In order: Mr. Ralph OJ Jimbo Bruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuce These four are people who, even if you arent a Bills fan, you think of first. (there are a lot of honorable mentions, but that's a good problem to have).

feel good TV. A couple points: 1) What do you make of the fact that Nix had his back to the room, facing the big board, but Whaley had his back to the board, facing the room. I hate to say it, but I get a little bit of "Napoleonic" vibe from Whaley. He stands up and shakes hands and buttons his jacket after every pick. THOUGHTS? (do they think he's too immature at this point, with the pen behind his ear, etc.?) 2) (to those questioning who is in charge:) Of course Nix is "in charge" simply because if you are another team calling, you dont say "lemme speak to Whaley." Only the official GM is authorized to negotiate and execute trades. We dont know who puts the big board together. THAT is the key to who is running the show. Nix never ever said "I thought this" or "I thought that." Its always "we thought . . . ." 3) How can I get that Bills logo painted onto my bedroom wall (at 5:00 mark)? 4) Seriously. Why is marrone wearing his Syracuse Orange shirt during the sit-down interview part. Dude, wtf ? Like, WTF?

Piling On - A response to the Draft Experts
maddenboy replied to 30dive's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Decide who you want. Get him. Especially at quarterback. The bills have sucked at evaluating QBs for years. I feel Whaley's and Marrone's fingerprints all over this. Younger thinking. Git 'er Done. 4 years from now, when you Google the 2013 nfl draft, you'll laugh at the first round (same as any other year). Maybe 10-12 still in the league. So screw Kiper. If there's a guy you think will stick, take him. Especially at QB. -

Rd 4, Pick #105: S Duke Williams - Nevada
maddenboy replied to SDS's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Not just that he covers ground, which he does. But he is DECISIVE. When he sees what he's looking for, he's all-in. There's even one play where he correctly stayed at home on the weak side instead of over-pursuing, and made the play. I guess he has good discipline, which we want. Lastly, someone asked if he's an "in the box" player. I'd say he's an "other side of the line of scrimmage" player. Me happy. -

Rd 1, Pick #16: QB EJ Manuel - Florida St.
maddenboy replied to SDS's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
3-5 years down the road, we will look back at this draft and see that only about 10-12 of the first rounders are still in the league. Same for every year. If there's somebody you think is a true NFL player, take him. It doesnt matter much where you take him. Come out of the draft with as many true NFL players as you can. For QB, the stakes go up. If there's a qb you think is a franchise player, take him at 8. The fact that they gambled down to 16 shows true moxy and draft prep. But dont fuc$ around twice. Get your guy. -
