When you hire Eugene Parker pre-draft, you are saying to the world "I'm all about the money." When you change to Eugene Parker after you are in the league, you are saying "I want out of here." If that's how it is, then Buh-bye EJ. And maybe my Lotto numbers will finally hit tonight.

Changes to Draft/Game Rules to Overcome Good QB Dearth?
maddenboy replied to Fadingpain's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think you misapprehend the whole point of this thread. No offense intended. Yes, Franchise QBs are out there. About 7-10 of them. Period. Yes, someone will find them. But then there are 20-25 teams without one. And in the current NFL, you pretty much MUST have one to have a shot at a championship. This is about how the NFL's model is flawed and maybe not sustainable, and certainly not maximizing itself. In how many cities can fans seriously say, on opening day, "we are winning the SuperBowl THIS year?" Maybe 5-6. The cities with the top top QBs only. This thread is about the 10s of Millions of other fans, who are stuck every year with "we are getting better" or "we are improving" or "if things fall right we might make the playoffs," or "maybe I should find something else to do with my time and money." ----------------------------- This isnt about "how can the Bills find a franchise QB?" Its about "for those who dont or cant (Bills or not), should the NFL really be all about "Franchise QB?"" Maybe, just maybe, lets make NFL football more about football, and less about stellar QB-ing. -
Big Ben .... Possible or impossible?
maddenboy replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Even if Whaley cant get Jimbo, despite his best efforts, . . . I guess I'd also settle for Big Ben. -
No. We arent talking about RB or OG. We are talking about the most cerebral position in all of pro sports. You can train me to be a soldier. Maybe even a Ranger. And possibly to fly cargo planes. But if I dont have Fighter Pilot in me, I just dont. Very very few people do. Feel. Touch. Internal clock. Eyes behind my back. 3 dimensional spatial awarness. Attitude. EJ doesnt have it. period. RG has it deep down (I think, of course I dont know, but he has shown signs). RG just doesnt want to do it somebody else's way (like early Mike Vick). He needs to learn that his way is wrong, then he will open up. Guy graduated High School in 3 years, so he's not slow.
-
I stated and conceded that RG doesnt look. He doesnt want to be that kind of QB. But the question is which of these 2 is able to be that kind. I submit that RG is, and EJ isnt. And its not a question of degree. RG has it (buried somewhere). EJ doesnt. If you dont have it, its nearly impossible to find it. Bottom line: I'll take the guy who is able to be a real NFL QB over the guy who, at MAX improvement (which few people ever achieve in any field) is not winning QB material. Even if the likelihood of RG hitting max is 25% and the likelihood of EJ hitting max is 80%.
-
I'm completely opposite on this one. EJ wants to (be able to read defenses and be a real QB) but he cant. "Slow eyes," which people around here roll eyes at, as if its a stupid criticism or phrase, means what you think it means. Its a polite way to say "slow information processor." RG can (read defenses and be a real QB and win games for you) but he doesnt want to. RG wants to win the RG way, or not at all. Kinda like Vick in the first decade or so. Therefore, I'd take RG. If you forced me to choose.

Problem with a guy out-of-costume is (1) you have to pay him more (remember when the San Diego Chicken tried to sue for more money, but since it could be anybody inside, the guy himself wasnt deemed to be worth much), and (2) its weird if you change guys from time to time. How about just make Billy more manly. Or, Bull-ly. Update him. ------ After I posted this and re-read it, it came to me. Inspired by Rex. Rename him Bully the Buffalo, along with his updated image. The anti-bully campaign might not like it, but so what?

[Please Change Title]Pepper Johnson?
maddenboy replied to uticaclub's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This is probably NFL-Fraternity-speak. A guy who is wanted has a better chance of getting a job somewhere else. A guy who was fired, notsomuch. So Rex is maybe just being cool about it, helping Pepper on the way out, even though Rex has filled all of the defensive coaching positions already. -
Changes to Draft/Game Rules to Overcome Good QB Dearth?
maddenboy replied to Fadingpain's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
But the point of this topic (as I see it) is not "how can we help the Bills win the super bowl." Its "how can the NFL become more competitive?" Also, "How can the NFL make more money?" In normal life, yes, the strong should survive. But this is about entertainment, and fans being righteously excited about their teams well past Thanksgiving. In a sport with 32 teams and only about 7-8 QBs. -
Changes to Draft/Game Rules to Overcome Good QB Dearth?

I agree with your criticism. What about 6) All interceptions will be considered downed at the point of the interception. No more picks-6. Encourage the lesser QBs to take more chances? -
Changes to Draft/Game Rules to Overcome Good QB Dearth?
maddenboy replied to Fadingpain's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
(to anybody who hasnt read every post in this topic, do yourself a favor and go back and read them. There's some very very good stuff back there). 1) Instead of changing the draft to allow more QBs picked, the NFL should change the practice squad rules. QBs should not count against the number of players on a PS (within reason, so Belichick cant hoard them and have 45 qbs on his PS). QBs on PS should not be counted against the salary cap. And the rules for plucking a player off another teams PS should be changed to make it harder to pluck another team's project QB who is making progress. 2) Allow backup QBs to practice more. Change the practice rules in the CBA to allow coaches and players more time to develop them. There is currently the argument that developing a QB takes reps from the starter. Change this. 3) Instead of making it easier for bad QBs to read and execute, instead the NFL could make the run-game easier. So other teams can be competitive. 4) There was a suggestion, above, that a current problem is that you can barely breathe on the QB or its a defensive penalty. This should stay. There are too few of them and its bad for the league if they get hurt. Brady going down does not make EJ a better QB. 5) Pass Interference should be changed in 2 ways. (a) make it 5 yards and a first down. (b) Do not allow any contact whatsoever when the ball is in the air. No more arm-bars. No more hooking the WR around the waist with the off-hand. No more judgment from the Ref about whether the contact affected the play. This, so that when an average QB spots an open receiver and throws to him, the open receiver actually stays open more often. -
I desperately wish my people would stop naming their kids Sanquez and Janqulorious or whatever. . . . of course, they might actually be white. possibly. maybe.

Bring Back the Red Helmets!
maddenboy replied to Mike in Horseheads's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
No red. Red was trendy. But white is the Bills. The Standing Buffalo is not just the Bills, but Buffalo, NY itself. -
Is it possible we are confusing "reports to" with "is accountable to?" I cant see all 3 of them constantly picking up the phone to call Terry for approvals. Or to clarify something. I mean, it could actually be as they say. Co-equal branches of govt. But it probably just means that none can fire the other. But truly, its kinda dumb to have the head coach "report to" the owner. ( On reflection, I think that what bothers me it the feeling that Whaley is being marginalized or emasculated. Kind of like saying "you're not a real GM yet Doug, but you're on your way")

Press Conference Day Contest
maddenboy replied to BringBackFergy's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
(no hijack intended here. But a Podium is something you stand on, to raise yourself higher. From the greek root Pod, meaning feet. Think podiatrist = foot doctor. Then there's Dais or Rostrom, for the small mini-stage where there's usually a table for multiple speakers to sit behind. A Lectern is the slant-fronted stand used to hold reading material. Think Lecture. http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/lectern?show=0&t=1421253359 An orchestra conductor stands on a podium, with his sheet music on a lectern.) Not that anybody remotely cares, or even should. Just sayin. Somebody once 'splained it to me (http://judgepedia.org/Howard_H._Shore), so I'm paying it forward. Carry on, sirs. -
Cowboys reportedly offer DeMarco Murray 4yr/$16mill
maddenboy replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
1) Bills should get Peterson 2) Bills should get Ray Rice 3) Bills should get Frank Gore (since SF has about 8 RBs behind him). In all scenarios, CJ should be gone. Maybe in trade to the aforementioned teams. -
Cowboys reportedly offer DeMarco Murray 4yr/$16mill
maddenboy replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Please, lets not compare Murray to Spiller. Not just the guy. Not just the contract. But fundamentally, whether we want / need Spiller at all. It would be like debating what price to pay Lee Smith. Why even waste a roster spot? Did you guys see Ezekiel Elliott from OSU? There's a old addage that on many plays, a RB either needs to make 1 guy miss or else break 1 tackle (because, based on play design, it might not be possible to block every single defender). Who do we have on the roster that can do that? Nobody, on a consistent basis. And CJ would be my 3rd choice (old ass Fred can occasionally make a guy mostly miss, and Boobie can truck a dude if he works up a head of steam). Stop thinking about how mad we'll be if CJ goes somewhere else and blows up. MOVE ON. -
Guess which team is listed #1 to land Peyton Manning ?
maddenboy replied to HOUSE's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Manning's #1 factor at this stage is probably Offensive Line. Even moreso than WR or TE or Defense. He is not trying to run for his life on every other play. Sooooooo . . . . fuggedaboudit -
OSU's Cardale Jones considering NFL jump
maddenboy replied to Punch's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
OMG yes. As big and solid as he is, I dont think he'd take a lot of physical damage early on. Think Roth-liss-buurger (or however its spelled) -
Source: Quinn wants Jets job;Kyle Shanahan for OC
maddenboy replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Its against his self-interest only if he really wants the Jets. If, say, he wants Buffalo, it definitely helps create a market where none exists. -
[Please Change Title]CJ Spiller
maddenboy replied to Mikie2times's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It used to be a joke about linebackers who suck at tackling, because they try to make big hits instead of wrapping-up. "He learned how to tackle by watching SportsCenter" CJ learned to play RB by watching SportsCenter. He wants to take it to the house on every play. CJ coulda been Jamaal Charles, but CJ doesnt want to do the dirty work. CJ will slam it up the middle like a trooper if he absolutely has to, but it feels like he only does it so he can stay on the field for the next play, because he plans to take that one 60 yards and get on tv. No thanks. -
Head Coach candidate: Hue Jackson
maddenboy replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The candidate's name is Huge Action. Mods, please request that OP fix his post. A name like that should not be wasted. --Signed, Dick Cass, President, Baltimore Ravens.
