True, I didn't see the INTs, the forced fumbles, the sacks.

But that's a narrow view of what counts as "making mistakes." Not giving up the big play, making an offense sustain a 12 play drive without a holding penalty, a dropped catch, a false start causing a 1st and 15 ... all of those things are critical to a bend but don't break philosophy. And Edmunds was a very good fit for that.

i dont think the point of the bend-but-dont-break philosophy is to wait for the opponent to make mistakes.

you cant just say, (for example):  on average, a 12 play drive will yield X number of penalties, Y number of dropped passes, and Z number of missed field goals.

The point of the bend-dont-break is to capitalize on those mistakes.  Where capitalize does not just mean 'eventually get the ball back.'

sacks.  forced fumbles.  QB hits.  Opponents geting frustrated and commiting personal fouls.  Tricking QBs.

Edmunds gave you none of that.   Dont tell me it wasnt his job and i dont know his assignment, etc.

I think the only time on Defense where your assignment does not involve making a play is either (1) eating a double team, or (2) setting the edge.   Otherwise, your assignment should be to do your role, so you can be in position to make a play if it presents.

Never happened with Edmunds.  He was like the employee whose priority was to not get fired.  No thought of advancement.

Man, I hope he holds out until week 8. Go Bills!

"’Chris, can you please come back?’ Kelce said on the ‘New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce’ podcast, which he appears on regularly with his brother, who plays for the Philadelphia Eagles. ‘You're really scaring me, man. I don't get it. You must know something that I don't know because I just don't get it. I really want to get another Super Bowl ring with you, brother. This is me bargaining you to just come back and play football for the Chiefs. Please, we need you. We need you bad, and I don't know what the situation is.’”

@Zerovoltz, as a Chiefs fan, how do you think this holdout could affect the team?

usually, players dont do this to other players.

so, maybe kelce spoke to Chris Jones.   Maybe jones wants to come back but he needs some cover.  "I woulda stayed gone.  But i cant leave my 'brothers' hangin'.

so maybe Jones is cool with it.  beforehand.

Why don't they just hire him as a coach?

if i'm barkley, i wanna get as many accrued seasons as i can, first.

coaches dont have a pension.  He can coach into his 60s if that's what he wants to do.   No rush.

Plus, if he wants to coach, he might have to start in the HS or College ranks.  I mean, the Bills do seem to love him in the room, but we dont know if he has much to offer as a coach.

I'm more worried about him being extended, mid-season, before he proves himself worthy of such.

if he is extended but hasnt proven much, I'd suspect he gambled on himself preseason, saw he was losing that bet, and approached the team to see what he could get.

so, since we do (apparently, according to well reasoned opinions about him in our system) have use for him, i'd be happy.  because it would mean it was not a top-dollar deal, for somebody we were gonna keep in 2024 almost no matter what.

Hate it. Manufactured and looks desperate.

when was the last time we had a non-QB rookie be named / voted a Captain?

because that's when you know Captain is an earned honor on that team.  And also that you have drafted quite well.  Your team is full of mature men who give credit where its due.

otherwise, if its just a popularity contest or coach-driven, or a gift to the media who have nothing else to cover for 2 weeks of dead time, then fans like us / me will wonder "what's really goin on?  and why should i care?"

I have Spectrum and the ESPN app. One minute before tonight’s Utah/Florida game, Disney yanked ESPN from Spectrum subscribers over a contract dispute. I tried to watch it on my ESPN app and couldn’t do that either which makes no sense to me.

do you have phone service with spectrum?

if not, shut off your wifi.   So you phone will use something not-Spectrum for internet.

And/or, if this works, maybe try using your phone as a Mobile Hotspot.  Then set your laptop or tv to use the internet off your phone's HotSpot.

(gotta make sure you have plenty of data on your phone plan.  if not, its probably worth paying for the temporary upgrade.)

From what was quoted, "Beane told me off the record" was not said, and it was said in front of actual microphones during an actual broadcast.

If you're a journalist and that's your idea of proper journalistic etiquette I don't know what to tell you.

    fair point

  8. 40 minutes ago, Beck Water said:

So here's the thing.  If I speak "off the record" to you, it means I'm speaking in confidence.  It's between you, me, and the walls.

If you then make it between you, me, and your radio broadcast buddy IN THE BOOTH, with microphones around, it's no longer "off the record".  You have broken my confidence.

If it were true that Beane said something like that on Miller's SiriusXM radio show, you need to change the tense to "it seems they HAD a good relationship".

    disagree

if you are someone who puts things on the record, as part of your job, i expect you will put things on the record.  that's why you are talking to me.  to help you do your job by collecting things to put onto the Record

so here, "off the record" is the same as "dont quote me on that" and/or "if you attribute this to me i will deny it and be angry as hell."

for example, colleagues tell each other "Beane told me off the record that kyle allen sucks" is fine.  As long as (from Beane's perspective) you made clear to your colleague that its off the record, and you trust that colleague to also keep it off the record.  Which means "out of my [Beane's] mouth."

It does not mean "take it to your grave" when speaking to someone whose job and industry is to put things on, or off, an actual Record

. . . I want to see, like I am sure most non Buffalo fans are as well, if they will wilt again or not in the playoffs.

have to admit, i think 'wilt' describes it perfectly.   In the national view of the NFL, the Bills just petered out.

The difference is, other fan bases dont care why.  They got their popcorn ready for the AFCCG.  It took them one day to move on.

the national narrative this year has been "wilt or not wilt.'

last year it was "super bowl or not super bowl"

. . . The only AFC teams that could realistically afford him are the Browns, Chiefs and Bengals.

. . . As for the Bengals they have the aforementioned Hendrickson who they just signed to an extension that keeps him in Cinci through the 2025 season.   On the other side that have Hubbard who is also inked though the 2025 season at an average of $10 million plus.  Not to mention they still have Burrow's and Higgins' extensions to get done.

the other problem with the Bengals is the actual cash.   To fund large signing bonuses.   Mike brown is saving every penny, and looking for new lines of credit, for the moment when he can no longer earn interest on it by delaying paying Burrow.

Mike brown has no cash and hates to pay it.   Mark davis has no cash but loves to pay it.

mike brown lives like its paycheck to paycheck.

  11. Jaguars

Shad khan needs sizzle for his London fanbase.  Jaguars have good players.  But have they ever had a star in his prime?  ever?

Doug peterson, say what you will, does seem to know how to make a superbowl team.  They could easily and quite rationally think they are exactly one piece away.  They could easily think they are in a window AND with young players.

Just look at the cuts that were made this year - A lot of now-former Bills lost out to new acquisitions. That means improvements were made.

i dont agree that this means improvements were made over last year's team.

example:  last season Tre White was an 85 at the start, but currently he is only a 79.  so if he gets beat out by an 81, that might not be 'improvement' over last year

    I'll make a determination after the 1st 5-6 games

I really can't tell if this team is really better this year, but last year I thought we were more solid then we turned out to be.

By mid October will know for sure... until then it's either the doom and gloomers or pom pom posters. I'm a wait and see guy.

We are a good team either way, but are we a SB team???  Honestly cannot tell till I see how we a stack up against other teams.

which means you are also not optimistic.

its like saying "in a normal year, i could tell you right now.  But this year . . . ."

its like saying "i might become optimistic at some point"

Its 27 years old now.  There has never been any significant renovation, which technically makes it about the oldest arena in the league.  It is ugly/worn on the inside, the seats are decrepit and disgusting.   It was also built much cheaper than arenas around the same timeframe, and the cheapness shines through over time.

Most/all of its contemporaries 90s arenas have had major renovations in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

The seating bowl is a terrible design for site lines, the concourses (especially in the 300 level) are horrible, the bubble roof sucks the life out of the place, and the outside of it looks terrible (and worn/faded).

It is going to need a decent sum of money, and the public ask will be coming.

All this talk of (Jonathan) Taylor made me notice that it's been a few weeks since someone here called for bringing back (Tyrod) Taylor. Wassup you guys?

i prefer to stay out of jail.

but that said, we could do worse.  And currently probably are.

  16. 7 hours ago, Solomon Grundy said:

YES!! Say, for instance, Josh had a minor injury and had to sit 2/3 games. Taylor would be the backup QB best friend. With Josh at QB, Taylor would make the playaction game DEADLY. He would open the field for Davis/Diggs on deep routes. The misdirection game would also vicious. Finally, we would not need to rely on Josh as much on the 3rd/4th and short yardage. Don't even get me started on a home run threat on the ground

so, since i cant find a backup QB to win 2 or 3 games . . . i should sign and pay, and trade for, a star RB.    To help my backup QB win 2 or 3 games, if needed.

Meantime, the other 14 games, its overkill.   I agree with the sentiment that we shouldnt take the ball out of Josh's hands.

its like signing a basketball guard to play with michael jordan.  We pass you the ball so you can pass it back to Jordan.  When you start shooting too much and hogging possessions, we trade you.   We didnt bring you here to take the ball out of Jordan's hands

Yes, and a divisional rival will probably grab him and get a PR boost.

    disagree

whatever team signs Damar knows its gonna have to release him eventually.   That's a worse PR hit than any possible boost

its like that one gay guy who entered the draft years ago.  Teams didnt want to pick him because he was not a good football player.  So they knew they didnt want the bad PR when they released him.  (finally googled it.  Michael Sam.  7th rounder by the Rams in 2014)

If Damar can play, it would be safer to trade for him after he has shown you wont have to cut him.  He hasnt shown he will ever be that.

ergo, i suspect Damar will make it through to our practice squad.

  18. i noticed one thing that might make the credibility of the survey results suspect

The article did not say that each of these "Certified Agents" had at least one client on a roster or looking for work during the period.

was it leigh steinberg?  Master P?  Mike Lombardi?

    ---

for example, on running backs being underpaid, somebody actually said:

    • “Stop calling themselves running backs. ‘All-around player’ or ‘playmaker’ or some other position label that applies to several different current positions.”

because the jedi mind trick will work on NFL GMs?
