I've wondered: How do players really feel about the IR-Stash game? Enough to play along? I mean, everybody wants to be a starter. But since we all cant be, . . . .

feels more like Matthew Stafford to me. That feeling of "all these years, it felt like the quality of the team was holding him back. Imagine if he was on a good team." Whereas we know what Matt Ryan's ceiling is. Not comparing ceilings, but it seems like we will never know Trevor Lawrence's. -
Reason: pre-scouting your future home team. Not as a rooting interest of course, but just to be conversant. "old-school" wrt the London Jaguars, if you will. They wont even have to change the team nickname, and will have a built-in stadium sponsorship deal. Just that it will suddenly become 3 syllables, instead of 2. (at least it will erase the mysterious letter "i" that somehow gets in there)

I, also, hate to read the entire thread before jumping in to post. Unfortunately, since I did read this one, I learned that (1) yes we could if we lose more FAs than we get, and (2) we no longer sign FAs, so as soon as Mitch walks, we should get something from the purposely-mysterious formula that only Bill Belichick is allowed to know.

8/21 Preseason Gameday Thread Bills @ Bears 1pm Eastern
maddenboy replied to Chandler#81's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I would love it if the coaches do the following: 1) Tell Mitch he is not playing 2) Then, Start Mitch. Just as sudden as a backup QB might get put into a game. 3) Take Mitch out after a couple drives and de-brief him. Tell him we just wanted to see. Hit the showers. 4) Then, Start Mitch in the 2nd half, to make sure he treated the halftime adjustments like a starter (not usually done in preseason but I'd do it this time). Maybe I wouldnt do this last part. Kinda feels disrespectful to a grown up former starting qb. Maybe I'd just ask him if he wanted to start the 2nd half. Because he might be relieved that he doesnt have to play in potentially hostile territory. See how he deals with it all. -

where on earth do the JESTs find 6 wins? Nothing personal, but this feels like a prediction from ESPN where their predictions, total, have the league playing above .500 football (the total number of wins is more than the 256 [now 272] games that will be played). Somebody gotta lose. I dont see the JESTs winning a single division game. And who else can they possibly beat? -
Alphas Roster Stab 2.0 (after first preseason game)
maddenboy replied to Alphadawg7's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Isnt Hollister supposed to be able to play from the backfield? I mean, as long as we arent using FB much, and we dont seem to be using a FB to blow up a linebacker in the hole, then jettison the FB, cut Taiwan, and keep Doyle /Obada /any-breathing-CB -
Overreaction Saturday…whatcha got after BUF/DET?

<Frank Reich has entered the chat> "Norwood lined up for the 47-yard game-winning field goal attempt from the right hash of the 37-yard line, with Frank Reich the Holder and Adam Lingner the Long snapper." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wide_Right_(Buffalo_Bills) (The Surgeon General warns to NOT click on this link) -
Since we now have a 17 game season, AND since we are for sure making the playoffs, I'd consider using regular season week 1 as the true tune-up game, since we dont NEED it. As far as starters, sometimes you have to play them in preseason, just to see how the fringe players actually perform alongside real NFL players. Bottom line: 1) zero JA17 until Dawkins is back to game shape. If that's not until week 1, so be it 2) Mitch needs time with starting WRs a little. Just a little. 3) zero Tremaine Edmunds. There isnt anything he does in this D that will make/break any evaluation for any other defender (unlike Mitch with the WR1s). And plus too, I dont need him injured in a 'contract' year 4) zero Tre White. Let the scrub corners play a lot.

Should Gilmore pout a bit more - a la Howard?

. . . that's a pretty hefty "fix" there, IGB. You should have added ". . . and Maddenboy wins the Lotto." -

Gilmore needs to "sit in." You gotta show up if you play for BB. Except you cant limp around with a fake injury around BB. So its a dilemma for Gilmore. Of course we hope they break the bank for him. -
Stidham needs back surgery.

it also makes it less likely they can flip newton or hoyer or stidham for picks. -
Zach Wilson no show at Jets' camp UPDATE: SIGNED
maddenboy replied to Inigo Montoya's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
but i dont think they've paid it yet. I think they agreed to pay it within 15 days or 30 days or something waaaaay sooner than 2022. Does sportrac already count it. And I still think its amortized, so the Jests' books should reflect 1/5 of the bonus, more or less depending on accounting. And still, there's a difference between the Jests' bank account and the Owner's bank account. Just because the $22MM (or even 1/5 of it) counts against the Jests' books, doesnt mean that's where the whole $22MM cash paid-in-full is coming from. Pegula can afford it. Shad Khan can. Mark Davis, notsomuch. I'm saying maybe the Jests ownership notsomuch. -

yes, but i'm not just talking about current income. The bonus spread is a consideration. The bonus doesnt come out of this year's cap, its amortized. But I have to pay it all either now, or in the future, or in installments. If I dont have enuf in the bank to pay you $22MM by writing you a check today, it doesnt matter how much I'm likely to make between now and this date next year. The owner might have to cough up the cash out of his own pocket, not just from the Team bank account. Especially if the team is paying multiple signing bonuses in one year. Or especially if the owner has to liquidate assets to cover it. Pegula can afford it. Shad Khan can. Mark Davis, notsomuch. I'm saying maybe the Jests ownership notsomuch. -

I do think the Jest are a relatively cash-strapped team. If not, then they have orders from on-high to behave as such. A silver lining for the NFL at large, is that the league can use this as evidence that there is no collusion in the NFL. Just because one team (or 31) do something, doesnt mean that everybody else follows. In fact, we have teams trying to put toothpaste back into tubes (to counteract any potentially precedent setting moves by clubs). Best I can do. Otherwise, Jests is just Jesting, as usual. Thank god. -

you left out the key word at the end. "Forever." Hell, I still have a hard time rooting for the Colts ("things an old man would say, for $500 Alex). The Frank Reich thing causes me a slight moment of confusion before my hatred settles back in. But yes, we should still be classy. In our hatred. -

Bold predictions - Bills training camp & roster
maddenboy replied to HappyDays's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think some of the more Xs and Os posters have pointed out that Brieda's running style is different from the style of our run-game offense. If so (please somebody chime in here), does that mean Brieda proves himself to be clearly the best RB so that we switch running game style to fit his skills? I could see Brieda ending the season with the most yardage, since he is fast on outside runs, and reportedly has good hands. But if my recollection is right, RB 1 would require some changes. -
Correct here in California. [former prosecutor here] Indeed, in CA at least, we dont need the victim's co-opertation in DV cases or related cases like sexual abuse or crimes with underage victims. There is no such thing here as "the victim declined to press charges." Its not up to the victim here. Here, we understand that there are many reasons why a victim would decline to go forward. Anytime I hear a prosecutorial agency say they arent going forward because the victim "declined to prosecute" or "recanted" or is uncooperative, I see an agency that is lazy or understaffed. We need a good Texas lawyer to chime in. But likely Texas is aggressive too.

1) he doesnt have to be "innocent." Just "Not-Guilty" beyond a reasonable doubt, or by preponderance of evidence. And it depends on the definition of the crime. And what the NFL will do with it after the dust settles. 2) they arent "victims" yet. They are accusers. Until its proven that something wrong happened, there's no "victims." 3) I agree there's zero chance that nothing happened. But maybe not to each accuser the same way, and maybe nothing happened that is legally wrong. Maybe something Morally "wrong" happened.

I'm thinking 3 things. 1) agents for Zac at #2 and Trey Lance at #3 want to wait for the other to go first so the agent doesnt give recruiting ammo to his competitors. This sounds like a leadership issue for the QB, not knowing that the QB is the boss of the relationship, or not acting like it. I'm guessing Trevor Lawrence told his agent to get it done instead of quibbling. Maybe this even went into Lawrence's selection of agents. [1A), the longer Zac and Trey miss time, the more excuse they have for eventual suckitude. Related to leadership and confidence lacking] 2) Since the deals at 2 and 3 are slotted wrt dollars, both QBs already have plenty of cash. As long as insured while they wait, any bank would be happy to lend them millions while they wait to sign deals. Agent has probably had this lined up for months. 3) J-E-T-S probably have slim cash and cash-flow compared to other teams/owners. Cheap/broke teams are more likely to haggle over offsets, bonus payouts, and other money issues. As stated upthread, J-E-T-S also did this with Darnold. Shad Khan aint got these problems. -
I will re-state my prediction from a the day the Panthers acquired Darnold. Because I agreed the Panthers were most likely for Watson. Panthers still want Watson. Panthers gauge that Texans will accept Darnold in trade, plus/minus whatever extras are negotiated. Panthers guage that Texans would prefer Darnold over any QB that the Panthers could have drafted this year. Texans can sell Darnold to the fanbase, as a rising QB (now removed from the stink of the Jets) with starter experience, and All-America somethingorother.
