Major "hater" dilemma
Chris in Syracuse replied to Over 29 years of fanhood's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
My two favorite teams are the Buffalo Bills and whoever is playing the Patriots. I have a rather unhealthy disdain for Tom Brady and quite frankly can't wait until he retires. -

Nix needs to get the pass rushing woes solved
Chris in Syracuse replied to Jerry Jabber's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I posted a similar topic. 2 good pass rushers at least. If you run a 43 you need at least 4 DE and 4 OLB's. We only have 2. If you Run a 34 we need 1 NT and 2 OLB's. My money is on staying with the 34 and getting 2 more OLB and one hybrid DE/OLB for when we use 4 man fronts. -
Getting bigger up front was very important. Remember when we ran the tampa 2 our guys were small and athletic but were constantly giving up a ton of rush yards. Now we have a bigger front line but we don't have the proper personnel at OLB. We are set at DL but we have no NT. Heard is serviceable and Troup is always hurt. If we stay 43 we are all set at DL but we have only one DE in Kelsay. and one OLB in Merriman and that is it. Everyone else is too big or too small. Nix and the stache have a lot to figure out.

No.

After reading the transcript of what Buddy is looking for in an outside backer or 43 DE he said 6'4" 260. We only have 2 of those. Merriman and Kelsay are both 6'4" and about 260. Everyone else is either way to short and light or way to heavy. You need a least 2 OLB's in the 34 and at least 2 DE in the 43. We only have two and one is old and the other is always hurt. The light ones become ILB and the heavy become 43 DT. If we decide to go hybrid some of those big guys like Spencer Johnson Dwan Edwards and Alex Carrington now become 34 DE or 43 DT. The point I am making is Buddy is a straight shooter. We have to look who in FA and the draft match that criteria and figure we need 5 of those on our roster minimum. Look for a lot of changes in personnel this year. Buddy also said he feels we need to simplify our defense. It seems to me our roster is overloaded with ILB's and 34DE/ 43 DT's. Take the best of those, cut the rest and bring in at least 1 FA and 2 draft picks and see what happens.

I feel the exact same way!

I love Bell and totally want him back. I don't believe Gailey likes him. He just said the other day Bell can't stay healthy when asked about his status. Two seasons ago he played all 16 games. The Denver game really showed how good he was. I think with a full offseason he can become elite. The question is do we sign him now or wait until FA starts and see what he gets offered. I think that is what they will do. I am sorry to say someone will offer him a lot of money and he will be gone. I would offer him a great contract but with incentives for staying healthy. maybe a 3mil base with incentives in the 6 to 8 mil range for being healthy. Something where if he ends up healthy he can stay and if not he can be cut with minimal cap loss.

Buddy Nix should be fired immediately!

I may have been a bit harsh but the latest report is that he will retire after this years draft. I really feel like Whaley needs to take over. True that GM's make mistakes but what bothers me the most was the way he went about trying to run the 34. You go out and get a lot of second tier free agents to fill in all the holes while you draft good young players. We just did not commit enough to making this change. And offensively we did not commit to finding even one true #1 receiver. If we had at least one true #1 SJ than all the other #2's would all look good. Buddy is good at recognizing talent but it takes more commitment to a philosophy than this wishy washy are we a 34 or 43 and a lot more foresight in putting together a complete roster. It is not easy but I think a lot of other GM's could have done better and I hope Whaley is one of them. -
I just watched the second half on youtube. All 7 11 minute segments. I was watching the game at a Newman Center Church at Fredonia College on the dish and walked out after the score was 35-3. I came back to see OT but never actually saw the second half, just the highlights. What a treat to watch that. WOW!

Last years draft was very good. I think he is great at drafting. To be a GM means a good mixture of vets and young players. We need more players to run the 34 particularly OLB which he did not address. We needed true #1 WR. We have a great cast of 2 3 and 4 WR's but no true #1's. SJ is not a true #1. We needed a true NT. Troup is not the answer. He left us with way to many holes and no quality depth. I blame him more than the coaches but great coaching can overcome adversity much better than what our coaches did. Whaley is in the organization and was next in line anyway. I think now is the right time. I agree that when the day comes that we have a new owner there will be a major house cleaning but who has a crystal ball. -

I agree with the "no excuses". There is no excuse for hiring a coach that insisted on a 34 defense. There is no excuse for allowing the hire of George Edwards. There is no excuse for extending Fitztragic. There is no excuse for such a lack of talent on this team. There is no excuse for sleeping during the start of free agency. He is solely responsible for everything. I say let him stay on as chief scout for the draft and turn the reigns over to Whaley. -
I would wait and see what the market value is for Bell and SJ. I think Bell will resign but they will not overpay because he won't command top LT money due solely to his injury problems. SJ should also be resigned but not for 9mil a year. He is not a true #1 and does not make the big catches. I am curious what his market value is. I would rather sign Welker.
-
I am curious what the market for his services will be. I would totally keep him for a low price with high incentives of he can stay healthy. I hope we keep him and give him a chance. The injury may actually save us millions. He played all 16 this year he would demand big money.

Wasn't Edwards a college level coach. he knows how to defend the spread option. I figured he would make good adjustments. -

Total Pass interference on a badly under thrown ball. A good qb and that is 6.
